2 How to Create a VPN Connection What is VPN? Connecting to VPN Create a VPN Connection Connect to Your Work Computer Copying Files What is VPN? Virtual Private Networks (VPN) are secured private network connections which enable secure connections to be made between two computers or networks. ADS have a VPN service which enables staff (who are registered for the ADS Remote Access service) to work remotely and access files, s and required applications. In order to use the ADS VPN service you will need a fast Internet connection, such as broadband. Guidance on selecting a broadband provider can be found here. Note: use of the ADS service is subject to the ADS Remote Access Terms and Conditions. Connecting to VPN As defined in the ADS Remote Access Terms and Conditions staff using a personally owned computer to connect to the ADS VPN service are first required to be registered with the ADS Windows Software Update Service before remote access permissions will be granted. Guidance on how to create a VPN connection is the next section. ADS provide two VPN servers: v1-adm.adm.ucl.ac.uk v2-adm.adm.ucl.ac.uk r1-adm.adm.ucl.ac.uk ADS advise on creating two VPN connections, one connection for each server. This will provide redundancy, if you are unable to connect to one server, you should be able to connect to the VPN service using the secondary server. If your your computer or laptop is UCL owned and has been configured by the ADS team for remote access, the VPN connection will already have been configured.

3 Create a VPN Connection Step 1 Go to the Start menu select Control Panel then choose Network Connections. Step 2 Go to the File menu and choose New Connection

4 The New Connection Wizard will start, click Next Step 2 Choose Connect to the Network at my Workplace, Click Next

5 Step 3 Choose Virtual Private Network connection, click Next Step 4 Give the connection a name e.g. ADS-VPN, Click Next

6 Step 5 You may see the next dialogue box, if you do select Do not dial an initial connection, click Next Step 6 Type v1-adm.adm.ucl.ac.uk in the host box, click Next

7 (Note: to create a secondary VPN connection you will need to repeat steps 1-10 and type r1- adm.adm.ucl.ac.uk instead of v1-adm.adm.ucl.ac.uk, see step 11) Step 7 Choose to Create this Connection for My Use only, then click Finish Step 8 Select to add a shortcut to the desktop if you wish and click Finish.

8 Step 9 Go to Start menu, click Network Connections and you will see the connection under Virtual Private Network Step 10 Right-click the VPN connection and go to Properties. Select the Options tab and select Include Windows logon domain

9 Step 11 You will need to repeat steps 1-10 to create another connection for the secondary VPN server r1- adm.adm.ucl.ac.uk. At step 4 - name the connection ADS-VPN2 and for step 6, type r1-adm.adm.ucl.ac.uk instead of v1- adm.adm.ucl.ac.uk. Connect to Your Work Computer Step 1 Firstly ensure you have an Internet connection, you can check this simply by opening up a web browser and accessing a webpage. If you are connecting from your home computer you may need to connect to your Internet Service Provider before you are able to establish an Internet connection. Either double-click on the ADS-VPN network connection icon on your desktop or click on the Start menu and choose Connect to and select ADS-VPN. Type in your username and password and ensure ADM is entered in the domain field Click on the Connect button and you will be connected to the ADS VPN service. Once you are connected you will be see a notification message in the taskbar saying "You are now connected to ADS-VPN"

If you are connecting from your home computer you may need to connect to your Internet Service Provider before you are able to establish an Internet connection.

10 Step 2 After you have connected to the VPN service, you will be able to directly log onto to your UCL computer. This will allow you to access all s, files and applications you have access to in the office. You will need to know the IP address of your computer before you can access it using a VPN connection. Follow the instructions here to obtain your computer's IP address. Once you have your computer's IP address, you will need can connect to your work computer. On your the computer you are using to connect to the VPN service go to Start menu, All Programs, Accessories, Communications and then finally Remote Desktop Connection Enter your UCL computer's IP address in the box Note: RDC is restricted to one connection per computer which means if you are accessing your computer from home, no-one in the office will be able to use the computer. if someone is already logged onto your UCL computer in your office your will be notified when attempting to connect. Copying Files Step 1 Once you have logged into your work computer you may wish to copy files from your local home computer to your UCL computer (or vice versa). Before you log onto your work computer using RDC click on the Options button and then select the Local Resource tab.

You will need to know the IP address of your computer before you can access it using a VPN connection. Follow the instructions here to obtain your computer's IP address.

11 Select the option for Disk drives. This will ensure the local hard disk on your computer is available when you log into your UCL computer. Click on Connect to connect to your UCL computer. Step 2 Once you have logged onto your UCL computer you will be able to see the hard disk of your home computer when browsing My Computer on your UCL computer, this will appear under the Other section. This allows you to transfer files between the two computers.

Click on Connect to connect to your UCL computer.
