1 Installing Novell Client Software (Windows 95/98) Platform: Windows 95/98 Level of Difficulty: Intermediate The following procedure describes how to install the Novell Client software. This software allows PCs to connect to SAS Novell Servers. Requirements: One of the following operating systems: Windows 95, Windows 98 o Windows 2000/Windows XP Users, go here: o Mac users, go here: A valid username and account for an SAS Novell server. The correct Novell tree, context, and server for your department. If unsure, contact your department s Unit Computing Manager or SAS IT Services. For on-campus computers, an Ethernet or wireless connection to the Internet. For off-campus computers, a high-speed Internet connection (DSL or cable modem). Off-campus users must also download and install the Cisco VPN Client. Please refer to the instructions located at: Getting Started: Before beginning the installation, obtain the appropriate Novell Client installation for your system using one of the following methods: 1. Download the SAS Computing Novell Downloads website from: 2. When asked what to do with the file, click Save or Save File. 1

2 3. In the Save as window, browse to Desktop and click Save. (See Figure 1 below). Figure 1: Save Novell Client file 4. When the file download is 100% complete, click Close on the file download window. 5. Close your browser and go to the desktop. Double-click on the C34Win9x.exe file. 6. In the WinZip Self-Extractor window, click the Browse button and select Desktop. (See Figure 2 below). Click OK to exit the Browse for Folder window. Then click Unzip in the WinZip Self-Extractor dialog box to begin extracting the client installation files. 7. Click OK when the files have unzipped successfully. Click Close in the WinZip Self-Extractor dialog box. 2

3 Figure 2: Extract Files to Desktop Folder 8. If you are using an on-campus computer, follow the next section, Windows 95/98 Installation (On-Campus Installation). If your computer is off-campus, skip ahead to the section Windows 95/98 Installation (Off-Campus Installation). Windows 95/98 Installation (On-Campus Installation) 1. Go to the desktop and double-click on the Win95 folder. Double click on the Ibm_enu folder in Win95, and double-click on the file called SETUP or SETUP.EXE in the Ibm_enu folder. 2. Review the Novell Client for Windows 95/98 License Agreement and click Yes to accept it and continue. Clicking No will cancel the installation. 3. In the Welcome to Novell Client for Windows 95/98 Install window, select Custom Installation and click Next. (See Figure 3 below). Figure 3: Novell Client for Windows 95/98 Install 4. In the Protocol Preference window, select IP Only and Remove IPX if Present, then click Next to continue. 3

4 5. In the Login Authenticator window, select NDS (NetWare 4.x or later) and click Next to continue. 6. The next window will ask you which components to install (See Figure 4, below). Select the following components: Novell Workstation Manager Novell Remote Management Novell Distributed Print Services Figure 4: Select Components (On-Campus Installation) 7. Click Install to continue. A series of Copying Files windows will track progress of the installation process. 8. If asked for the disk Windows 98 CD-ROM, insert it into the computer s CD drive and click OK. 9. If a Recommended Client Properties window asks you to set properties for Preferred Tree, Preferred Server, and Name Context, click OK. Then enter these values in the Novell NetWare Client Properties window (see Figure 5 below). Click OK to log in. 4

5 Figure 5: Novell NetWare Client Properties 10. When the installation finishes, click Reboot to accept the settings and complete the installation process. 11. After you reboot, a Novell Login window will appear (See Figure 6 below). Click the Advanced button. Enter your username, password, and the correct values for Tree, Context and Server in the appropriate boxes. Then, click OK to log in. Figure 6: Novell Login 12. If notified that your computer has been updated with a new version of the Application Launcher, click Yes to reboot. After the computer reboots, log in to the Novell Login window (see Figure 7, above). Windows 95/98 Installation (Off-Campus Installation) 1. Go to the desktop and double-click on the Win95 folder. Double click on the Ibm_enu folder in Win95, and double-click on the file called SETUP or SETUP.EXE in the Ibm_enu folder. 5

6 2. Review the Novell Client for Windows 95/98 License Agreement and click Yes to accept it and continue. Clicking No will cancel the installation. 3. In the Welcome to Novell Client for Windows 95/98 Install window, select Custom Installation and click Next. (See Figure 7 below). Figure 7: Novell Client for Windows 95/98 Install 4. Do not select any additional components; click Install to continue. A series of Copying Files windows will track progress of the installation process. 7. After you reboot, a Novell Login window will appear. Click Cancel since further steps are necessary to configure the Novell Client for off-site access. 11. Right-click the red N icon in the lower right corner of the screen. Select Novell Client Properties from the menu that appears. 12. In the Novell NetWare Client Properties window, click the Service Location tab. (See figure 9 below). Under Directory Agent List, enter slp.fas.rutgers.edu and click Add. Check the box for Static and clear the box for Active Discovery. Then click OK to exit the window. Figure 9: Directory Agent List 7

8 13. Reboot the computer. After you reboot, the Novell Login window will reappear (See Figure 10 below). For now, click Cancel. 14. Log on to the Rutgers VPN (refer to instructions). 15. Return to the Novell Login screen by right-clicking the red N in your taskbar, then selecting NetWare Login from the menu. 16. Click the Advanced button. Enter your username, password, and the correct values for Tree, Context and Server in the appropriate boxes. Figure 10: Novell Login Final step: Finishing the installation 1. 9 2. Right-click on the red N icon in the Taskbar and select Novell Client Properties. 3. Select the Advanced Settings tab (See Figure 11 above). Change the following settings as follows: Change Burst Mode to OFF Change File Caching to OFF Change File Commit to ON 4. Click OK to save the changes. 5. When asked Do you wish to reboot now? click Yes. 6. You are now ready to access Novell file, print, and application services.
