Packages cvered in this manual include Part Ns. 00-993450-00, 00-993451-00, 00-993452-00, 00-993453-00, 00-993455-00, 00-993457-00, 00-993459-00, 00-993462-00, 00-993463-00, 00-993465-00, and 00-993465-04. Parts ist The fllwing parts are required t install the packages: AMT amplifier kit, which, depending n the channel cnfiguratin specified n the rder, includes: AMT amplifier Cables, relays, attenuatrs, and hardware PTS frequency synthesizer kit, which includes: PTS frequency synthesizer Cnnectr bard Pwer crd, cax cables, and hardware Nth Channel kit (Part N. 00-992951-00), which includes: Transmitter and Cntrller bards Cax cables and hardware Attenuatr bard, 3rd channel r 4th channel Installatin Prcedure Installatin invlves preparing t install the hardware; installing the PTS frequency synthesizer, transmitter bard, transmitter cntrller bard, pulse amplifier, and switching relays (if applicable); and then cnfiguring and testing the system. Fr parts layut, wiring diagrams, and varius ptinal cnfiguratins, refer t the system intercnnect schematic drawing (Pub. N. 01-903010-00 fr UNITY INOVA, r Pub. N. 87-195901-00 fr UNITYplus). Preparing t Install the Hardware 1. Stp the acquisitin prcess in the hst cmputer (in a shell windw enter the cmmand su acqprc, r becme rt and enter killacqprc) and turn ff the cabinet pwer supply. Remve the cabinet s pwer cable frm the cnnectr at the rear f the pwer supply. 2. Remve the rear and side cabinet panels and frnt drs, as necessary. 2 3rd and 4th RF Channel Installatin 01-999135-00 B0599

Installing the PTS Synthesizer 1. Remve the blank panel abve the existing synthesizer. Remve the mving parts f tw chassis slides frm the cabinet psitin where the synthesizer is t be munted. This is usually the psitin immediately abve the existing synthesizers. 2. Attach the slide parts t the new synthesizer using fur 8-32 screws and slide shims (00-993161-00). 3. Attach the PTS Cnnectr bard (00-992106-00) t the Remte Cntrl input cnnectr at the rear f synthesizer. 4. Set switches n the PTS Cnnectr bard: Fr channel 3, set psitins 3 f SW1 and SW2 n and all ther psitins ff. Fr channel 4, set psitins 4 f SW1 and SW2 n and all ther psitins ff. 5. Cnnect the verrange cable (00-993015-00), if supplied, between P9 n the PTS Cnnectr bard and the 9-pin D cnnectr at the rear f the synthesizer. 6. Make sure the INT. STD/EXT. STD switch n the synthesizer is set t the EXT. STD psitin. 7. Munt the synthesizer in the cabinet. Install fur cage nuts (23-101008-00) at apprpriate places in the cabinet s rack munting rail s that the synthesizer can be secured with the fur screws (23-101009-00) prvided. 8. Cnnect a free Frequency Bus ribbn cable cnnectr t the PTS Cnnectr bard at the rear f the new synthesizer. 9. Cnnect the supplied pwer cable between the synthesizer's input cnnectr and the cabinet s pwer strip (at center rear f the cabinet). 10. Cnnect the shrt caxial cable (00-958297-0x) between the synthesizer s 5/10MHz IN cnnectr and an unused cnnectr at the signal splitter assembly lcated at the upper rear f the cabinet, behind the synthesizers. 11. Cnnect a lng caxial cable (00-958298-11) t the synthesizer s MAIN OUTPUT cnnectr. Rute this cable thrugh the cable tray belw the rf cardcage (upper cardcage), thrugh the hle belw the cardcage, and t the frnt f the cardcage. This will cnnect t J2X4 n the Transmitter bard that will be installed later. Installing Transmitter and Transmitter Cntrller Bards Refer t Figure 1, Figure 2, and Figure 3 fr cable diagram an slt assignments fr UNITY INOVA and UNITYplus rf cntrl cardcage and rf cardcage. 1. Remve blank panels as necessary frm the tw cardcages. Refer t Figure 1 fr rf cntrl cardcage frnt view and t Figure 2 and Figure 3 fr rf cardcage rear and frnt views, respectively. Transmitter 3 and Transmitter Cntrller 3 g int slt 7 f the rf cardcage and slt 15 f the rf cntrl cardcage, respectively. Transmitter 4 and Transmitter Cntrller 4 g int slt 6 f the rf cardcage and slt 13 f the rf cntrl cardcage, respectively. Cardcage slts are numbered frm the left as viewed frm the frnt. 2. Cnnect, at the rear f the rf cardcage, a thin yellw caxial cable (00-993198-03) that will carry the reference frequency frm the Reference Generatr bard (00-992096-01) t the new Transmitter bard. 01-999135-00 B0599 3rd and 4th RF Channel Installatin 3

Refer t Figure 2 shwing the rear view f the rf cardcage. 3. Clip the cable tie and install the ne supplied arund all cables. 4. Replace the bards that were remved in step 1. 5. Install the new Transmitter bard and Transmitter Cntrller bard in their respective slts. 6. Reinstall the blank panels in any remaining empty cardcage slts. CAUTION: The cardcage culd verheat if the blank panels are nt reinstalled int the empty cardcage slts. 7. Set the selectr switch n the frnt f the new Transmitter Cntrller bard t psitin 3 fr rf channel 3 r 4 fr rf channel 4. 8. Cnnect a small caxial cable (00-992897-04, 15 inches lng) between ne f the empty receptacles at the frnt f the Receiver Cntrller & Clck Generatr bard and J3X1 at the frnt f the new Transmitter Cntrller bard. 9. Cnnect the synthesizer utput cable (step 11 n page 3 in Installing the PTS Synthesizer ) t J2X4 f the newly installed transmitter. 10. Remve the input and utput caxial cables frm the frnt panel f the Attenuatr bard in the RF Cardcage. Install the new Attenuatr bard in the same slt f the RF Cardcage. Replace the input and utput cables yu just remved. 11. Cnnect the shrt caxial cable (00-958298-03) between J2X3 f the newly installed transmitter and the channel 3 r channel 4 input cnnectr at the Attenuatr bard. 12. Cnnect a lng caxial cable (00-958297-10, 5 feet lng) t the apprpriate channel utput frm the Attenuatr bard (see Figure 4). Installing Pulse Amplifier and Switching Relays If applicable, the new Pulse Amplifier (AMT) munts in the cabinet belw the existing amplifier. Refer t Figure 1, Figure 2, and Figure 3 fr cable diagram and slt assignments fr UNITY INOVA and UNITYplus rf cntrl cardcage and rf cardcage. 1. Remve the apprpriate screws t remve the blank frnt panel and tw mveable slide parts frm the cabinet. Munt the slides n the new amplifier and install it in the cabinet. 2. Cnnect the ribbn cable (00-993025-11) between J2A2 n the frnt panel f the Amp & Rute bard in the rf cntrl cardcage and the D cnnectr at the rear f the AMT. Rute the cable under the card cage and thrugh the cable tray at the rear f the cardcage. 3. Assemble the AMT rear panel and vent duct using 6-32 hardware. Remve the blank panel and install the vent and duct assembly at the rear f the cabinet, abve the existing panel assembly. This duct will guide the amplifier s cling air exhaust ut f the cabinet. 4. Cnnect caxial cables between the utputs f the Attenuatr bard and the channel inputs f the AMT. cate the cnfiguratin in Figure 4 that matches the cnfiguratin being installed and cnnect the cax cables as shwn. 5. Cnnect the heavy caxial cables with the type N cnnectrs t the channel utputs f the AMT. Rute these cables thrugh the hles in the vent panel t the magnet/cnsle interface cabinet. They will be cnnected t bandpass filters r relays in step 8 belw. 6. Cnnect the supplied pwer cable between the amplifier s pwer input cnnectr and the cabinet s pwer strip (at center rear f the cabinet). 7. Secure the amplifier s frnt panel t the cabinet rails using the screws remved in step 1 abve. 8. If the channel being installed is a dual full band channel, install relays K1003 r K1004 in the electrnics cabinet (near K1001, behind the rf cntrl cardcage) and cnnect them t the Relay Driver bard, and t the Attenuatr bard and AMT amplifier. 9. Install relay K5009 r K5010 (if present) in the magnet/cnsle interface cabinet and cnnect them t the Magnet eg Driver bard and t the cables frm the AMT amplifier and t the prbe/filter cables. Pwering Up, Cnfiguring, and Testing 1. Set the pwer switch n the AMT t n. Recnnect the main pwer cable and turn n the system pwer. 2. Press the reset buttn n the Acquisitin CPU bard t rebt the acquisitin hardware. 3. In a shell windw, enter su acqprc t restart the acquisitin prcess. 4. In the user VNMR windw, enter cnfig t bring up the cnfiguratin windw. Click n the Use Cnsle Data buttn. 01-999135-00 B0599 3rd and 4th RF Channel Installatin 7

The cmputer interrgates the newly installed hardware t determine its cnfiguratin. 5. Pull dwn the channel Cnfigure: menu and select the channel t be cnfigured RF Channel 2 (Dec), RF Channel 3 (Dec2), r RF Channel 4 (Dec3). Verify r set the parameters listed in Table 1. Table 1. Repeat step 5 fr the next channel if installed. 7. Select the Exit and Save buttn in the tp panel t enter the values. 8. Test the new rf channel fr functinality. Nte that nne f the experiments will have apprpriate parameters fr the third and/r furth channel until a parameter set is retrieved int that experiment with the rt r rtp cmmand. 9. Recall a parameter set: rt('/vnmr/stdpar/h1') dn2='c13' su Verify that the utput f the installed PTS is 10 dbm. 10. Enter create('dpwrf2') setlimit('dpwrf2',4095,0,1). Nte that if the Wavefrm Generatr bard is nt installed in the channel being tested, use the parameter dpwrm instead f dpwrf. 11. Cnnect the utput f the transmitter t a scpe and enter: dpwrf2=255,511,1023,2047,4095 d1=5 dm2='y' g 12. Verify that the utput vltage changes by 6 db. When dpwrf2=4095, the utput shuld be abut 10 dbm. 13. Set dpwrf2=4095 dm2='n' and enter su. 14. Cnnect the utput (see Figure 4) f the t a scpe. 15. Set dm='n' dm2='y' (if present dm3='n') nt=1 d1=5 dpwr2=10,20,30,40 (nt higher!) and enter g. Verify that the amplitude increases by 10 db each time. 16. RF Channel Interchange Mdule The RF Channel Interchange Mdule (Part Ns. 01-904799-XX, where XX varies accrding t whether the cable length is 16, 24, 32, r 40 feet) prvides the cables required fr a third r furth rf channel. With these cables installed, it is easier t share the hardware cmpnents fr a third r furth rf channel between tw UNITY INOVA NMR spectrmeters. T install the cables, refer t the system intercnnect drawing, cable label table, and, if necessary, the prcedures in this manual. Table 2 lists the parts in a mdule. Table 2.
