Top 5 reasons to become a teacher 1. An Education degree is a portable qualification you can use throughout Australia and many countries overseas. Choose from Early Childhood, Primary and Secondary teaching. 2. Career opportunities exist in government departments, children s services, family services, education, health, as well as community development and welfare agencies, educational tourist attractions, and support services for families. 3. Teaching develops confidence and skills in public speaking and communicating with others, which are transferrable skills that can be used in both professional and personal aspects of life. 4. Teachers are able to motivate and inspire young minds to help their students grow into wellrounded and competent individuals. A world of experiences from a university with a global reputation Our campuses in Cairns and Townsville are in the heart of northern Queensland, adjacent to the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and the wet and dry Tropics. You will experience our unique and natural wonders. From swimming in warm tropical waters to exploring the ancient Daintree rainforest, JCU provides a World Heritage location unmatched by any other Australian university. Our third main campus is located in Singapore. The campus offers both international and Australian JCU students the opportunity to study in South-East Asia s thriving commercial, technological, financial and academic hub. Many of our students also have the option to study overseas with one of more than 30 JCU exchange partner universities around the world. JCU takes pride in its strong student support network, small class sizes, and well established links with the community. All our courses offer hands-on practical experience to help make you work-ready. These include professional placements, projects and fieldwork. In 2015, the JCU Townsville City campus was opened in the heart of Townsville City, in Flinders Street. The campus provides a unique and progressive blend of teaching and study space, as well as meeting, networking and consultation facilities, where advanced design, technology and ongoing support services on-site all add to the quality of the environment and study experience. Plans are in place for JCU to also have a Cairns City campus providing similar facilities and opportunities as those available at the Townsville City campus. Our campus in central Brisbane, operated by Russo Higher Education, provides quality undergraduate courses to international students on behalf of JCU. JCU Thursday Island opened in 2003 and offers learning facilities for nursing and education students based in the Torres Strait. 5. Being in the company of students helps teachers of any age stay connected to current events, trends and technology. James Cook University is committed to building strong and mutually beneficial partnerships that work towards closing the employment, health and education gap for Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Our students come from many backgrounds, promoting a rich cultural and experiential diversity on campus. We acknowledge the Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the Traditional Owners of the lands and waters where we operate our business. We honour the unique cultural and spiritual relationship to the land, waters and seas of First Australian peoples and their continuing and rich contribution to James Cook University (JCU) and Australian society. We also pay respect to ancestors and Elders past, present and future. What you need to know Professional experience placements commence in your first year of study and involve practical work in state, Catholic and independent schools, plus a variety of other educational sites in rural and remote locations, as well as wider community settings. A compulsory five day intensive Professional Orientation Program on campus in your final year provides further opportunities to network with employers and other professionals. This can be completed at our Cairns or Townsville campuses. Students undertaking a teaching placement in Queensland are required by law to hold a valid Suitability to Work with Children (Blue Card), issued by the Public Safety Business Agency (PSBA). You should apply for your Blue Card as soon as you accept your offer at JCU, so you can start your teaching experience as soon as possible. Overview of Education at JCU A Bachelor of Education degree offers you a world of opportunities. JCU s education courses are designed to meet the requirements of the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) and the Queensland College of Teachers (QCT). This is important, as it gives you the ability to register to teach in Queensland, and work anywhere in Australia and many countries overseas. Professional experience forms a key part of all our education courses, with practical classroom skills beginning in your first year of study. Quality teaching staff, great facilities and small class sizes are distinctive features of our courses. There are also exciting opportunities for international experiences, and an internship option in your final year. As a JCU Education student you will acquire specialist skills for teaching in rural and remote areas. You will also be equipped to help improve education outcomes for Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. In addition to professional skills we will help you develop a sense of civic responsibility, working in the community. You will be part of our learning partnerships with community agencies, industry and business. When you enrol in our Service Learning for Sustainable Futures subject, you will undertake a minimum of 50 hours of work in an approved organisation, either in Australia or overseas. Your service learning project relates to the concept of sustainability and will suit your skills, interests and circumstances. You can usually complete your service learning in a block, or throughout a study period. As an Indigenous student, you can gain Primary teaching qualifications and remain within your local community while completing the Bachelor of Education at a Ratep study centre or at our Thursday Island campus. Please see page 11 to find out about the Bachelor of Education (Primary) Ratep. Ever since I began my studies at university, I have had a vision of returning to the Torres Strait to teach and be a role model for other Indigenous students. Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood Education) What is Early Childhood Education? High quality early childhood education is vital. Early Childhood Education (ECE) makes a difference in the lives of young children during their early years of schooling. As an ECE student you will focus on the education of children aged from birth to eight years, learning about development patterns, communication and behaviour. Course highlights Flexibility: You will enjoy innovative teaching approaches in this degree, including online delivery of subjects, collaborative study opportunities, and technology-enabled active learning, such as digital story-telling. Regional focus: Our degree focusses on the challenges and satisfactions of working as an educator in regional, rural and remote areas, in addition to urban contexts. We encourage you to participate in placements in rural and remote areas. Placements: Professional experience forms a key part of all our education courses. Starting from your first year of study, you will experience placements in a variety of settings with young children aged from birth to eight years. Career opportunities Early Childhood Education is a specialised field of education that leads to work in schools, preschools, kindergartens and childcare centres. A typical day is active and rewarding, involves indoor and outdoor work, and may require afterschool hours. Career opportunities have been increasing since national regulations came into effect in 2014. The Australian Government s statistical service reports that employment for Early Childhood teachers is expected to continue its growth. Course overview The Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood Education) is an undergraduate degree which normally takes four years of full-time study or part-time equivalent. Professional registration This course is nationally accredited through the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) in association with the Queensland College of Teachers (QCT). Visit: jcu.edu.au/2016/education I love putting the theory I ve learnt at JCU into practice and seeing the enjoyment kids get from being taught. As a male working in the Early Childhood, I want to inspire other men to see this as a career path. At work, I encourage the children to play outdoors, as nature and our tropical environment provide great opportunities for teaching and learning. The theoretical part of JCU s course is offered 100 per cent online. I work full time at the Cairns Early Years Centre, so the flexibility of online study really suits me. Accessing some material via audio-visual lectures has also been excellent. This degree has given me a very solid foundation to continue working in the Early Childhood area when I graduate. Studying to become a secondary school teacher has universal value. I chose JCU because of its reputation. Unlike big universities, the JCU lecturers get to know you, it s easy to make friends and there is a definite family feel between staff and students. I grew up in Normanton, 800 kilometres west of Cairns with a mostly Indigenous population. Eventually I plan to teach in Aboriginal communities, empowering people through education and promoting higher education in rural and remote Australia. First though, I hope to take my skills abroad, experience other countries and perhaps teach there. A highlight of my JCU education has been participating in an Australia-wide sporting competition, the National Indigenous Tertiary Education Student Games, where I met fellow students who are aspiring doctors, lawyers, teachers and artists. This is just one event of many that JCU offers students to help them develop skills and experiences outside their study area. (Recommended any one of Chemistry, Biology, Maths B, Physics, Physical Education or Health Education). I m studying a joint degree to give me more career opportunities when I graduate. At JCU I like the small class sizes and the easy access I have to my lecturers outside of classes. I feel like a person and not just another student. I look forward to the practical workshops and the amount of hands-on experience I receive each week. It s a great way to meet other students and practise the skills required for a Sport and Exercise Science degree. When I graduate I would like to gain employment in the Townsville region teaching Science or Physical Education to secondary school students. My long-term goal is to develop innovative health and physical education programs within schools, to make health a part of everyday living, and not just something children are told to do.
