3 Bachelor of The Early Years (Birth 5 years) ATAR LOCATIONS 70 / 90 (DS) / (DS) B / F (DS) Wollongong, Shoalhaven, Batemans Bay, Bega The Bachelor of The Early Years is an exciting and innovative approach to professional preparation of teacher qualified professionals in the Early Childhood and Care sector. It recognises the increasingly expanding and rewarding role of the Early Teacher. It also recognises the significance of enriched educational opportunities and experiences for all children in the early years necessary to ensure their present and future health, development and wellbeing. It focuses on extending and enriching young children s learning from birth through to five years and transition to school, providing children with opportunities to maximise their potential and develop a foundation for future success in learning. In this degree you will focus on the development of very young children being connected to family, community, culture and place. You will learn about: child development, improving educational and developmental outcomes for children, contemporary theories and approaches to curriculum development and implementation, establishing respectful and caring relationships with children and their families, cultural and social diversity, developing partnerships with additional services, early intervention and transition to school, leadership and advocacy, as well as creating physical and social learning environments designed to deliver a holistic approach to children s learning. This degree combines university and professional experience throughout the course, with some subjects offered face-to-face on campus and others using a flexible and blended mode of delivery, including online learning. CAREER OPPORTUNITIES There are high employment opportunities for Early Years graduates, and varied employment options. You can choose to be an Early teacher or Centre Director in early childhood education and care centres. In fourth year you will work with your experienced mentor on a substantial year-long project. You will learn by doing in the Professional Experience Program where you spend up to 16 weeks teaching in early childhood education and care centres, which will span across the length of your degree. I gained so much through these practical experiences and casual work in Early Childhood and Care centres, because although I had experience working in the sector before beginning my degree, you learn so much from other people and other centres. It was great to then come to class, share these experiences and explore new ideas with my fellow Early Years students. It s just something that keeps me interested and excited about my job. To do this social science students engage in interdisciplinary study about human behaviour, including foundations in psychology, social policy, sociology, human geography, research methodology, indigenous studies, and social determinants of health and wellbeing. Nationally and globally, there is an urgent need for reflective scholarly practitioners and researchers who are able to contribute to understanding the complex and changing needs of people throughout their lives, and in diverse communities in the face of technological, economic and social change. EDTION FOR CHANGE MAJOR This major intersects with the aspiration of the Social Sciences i.e. to transform lives and understand human behaviour. The theme of this major reflects how education is and can be a major influencing factor to bring about change in society. for Change draws on a range of topics including Advocacy, Indigenous Studies, Social Equity, Social Justice, Social Policy, Gender and Inequality. Embedded within this major is the opportunity for students to undertake a Service Learning placement. PATHWAY TO A BACHELOR OF PRIMARY A new major has been added to the Bachelor of Social Science (BSS) called for Change. Enrolling in this course will provide a pathway to Primary for students who do not receive 3 Band 5s. You will need to declare your For Change as your major in the BSS at the time of enrolment. If you wish to use this pathway as a means of transferring into the Bachelor of Primary you must complete and pass all 8 subjects of the first year of the Bachelor of Social Science ( for Change). You will then be eligible to apply for transfer and will commence primary education. Upon transfer, you will receive 48 credit points of specified and unspecified credit thus the duration of their time in the Primary degree will be 3 years. All students entering the Bachelor of Primary after 1 year in the BSS will complete 80 days of Professional Experience. Those students who decide to stay in the BSS- ( For Change) will be eligible to apply for the Masters of Teaching (Primary) at the completion of their undergraduate degree. DEAN S SCHOLAR The UOW Bachelor of Social Science (Dean s Scholar) is a program for high-achieving students. You will have extended subject loads, and guaranteed entry to the Bachelor of Social Science Honours degree. 5 DEAN S SCHOLAR The Bachelor Primary (Dean s Scholar) is a program for high-achieving students who wish to continue their studies through honours and research degrees. As a Dean s Scholar you will make a scholarly contribution to your field of study and to UOW. Bachelor of Primary ATAR LOCATION 75 / 90 (DS) Wollongong / (DS) G / C (DS) As of 2016 any student wishing to enter into a Bachelor of Primary must receive 3 Band 5s in their HSC results, and one of those Band 5s MUST be in English (Advanced or Standard). N.B. this rule does not apply to Early Years or Secondary. Primary teaching is a rewarding profession that can change lives. The Bachelor of Primary is a 4 year accredited qualification preparing graduates for the rewarding role of being a primary school educator. A primary school teacher educates children from Kindergarten to Year 6 (ages 5 to 12 years) and teaches all areas of the Australian primary curriculum. UOW Bachelor of Primary graduates focus on educating the whole child and promote lifelong learning in children. The degree aims to develop reflective, professional teachers, acknowledging the role of the teacher in the community, the demands of emerging technologies and the increasingly diverse classroom environment. In addition to studying the subjects in the Australian curriculum, you will focus on educational foundation subjects including Professional Studies, Teaching Gifted Learners, Aboriginal, Learners with Exceptional Needs, al Research, and Teaching Linguistically and Culturally Diverse Students. The degree combines university and classroom experience throughout the course, using on-campus, on-site and online learning environments. In addition to your core pedagogy and speciality subjects you can choose to study an education minor in Quality Mathematics Teaching, Information & Communication Technology (ICT), Literacy and Teaching, Environmental, The Arts, Special or English as a Second Language (ESL). It is true that employees recognise the high expectations UOW places on its students. My experiences from studying at UOW have modelled the person and teacher that I have become today. 6 Bachelor of Mathematics ATAR 73 / 90 (DS / (DS) B / F (DS) 2 units of Mathematics is essential, highly recommended advanced Mathematics or further This degree focuses on developing mathematical knowledge and professional teaching skills and will prepare you for work as a high school Mathematics teacher. Mathematics is a discipline central to many branches of science and commerce. Given its wide variety of applications, teaching the next generation of mathematicians requires specific skills. UOW Mathematics involves both learning mathematics but more importantly how to teach it effectively. There is also an opportunity to complete a Mathematics major as part of this degree. During this four-year degree you will study a combination of maths and education subjects, allowing you to practically apply both disciplines throughout your degree. Mathematics subjects including calculus, algebra, statistics and mathematical modelling are complemented with education subjects about teaching and learning including learning and development, pedagogy (the method and practice of teaching), professional teaching skills, curriculum studies and meeting learners needs. SCHOLARSHIP Each year, UOW offers five Mathematics Secondary Scholarships valued at $1,500p.a. to students starting this degree with an ATAR above 80 and Band 5 in Advanced Mathematics or equivalent. I ve always been really good at maths but never really considered teaching as a career path until Year 11 when I helped some of my classmates and found I really enjoyed it. Studying at UOW was always my goal. Over the years I ve considered other universities, but none of them have the THALIA WILSON First year, Bachelor of Mathematics range of facilities that UOW does. It also has a great reputation, which will open up more career opportunities for me. My Mathematics degree is something I will be able to take everywhere. At the moment, my ideal job would be working as a maths teacher at a boarding school in England. 7 Bachelor of Science ATAR 73 / 90 (DS) / (DS) F / G (DS) 2 units of a Science is essential, highly recommended band 5 or 6 in a Science This degree qualifies you as a secondary Science teacher in the disciplines of Biology, Chemistry, Earth and Environmental Science and / or Physics. Science at UOW involves learning science and how to teach it effectively. As a science teacher you will teach the structure and behaviour of both the physical and natural world through observation and experiment. UOW Science teachers have practical teaching skills and a high-level knowledge of science. During this four-year degree you will study a combination of science and education subjects allowing you to practically apply both disciplines throughout your degree. Science subjects including biology, chemistry, earth and environmental science, and physics are complemented with education subjects about teaching and learning including learning and development, pedagogy (the method and practice of teaching), professional teaching skills, curriculum studies and meeting learners needs. SCHOLARSHIP UOW offers five Science Secondary Scholarships valued at $1,500p.a. to students starting this degree with an ATAR above 80 and Band 5 in at least one science subject. Health and Physical teachers promote involvement and understanding in a range of movement areas including games and sports, dance, gymnastics, aquatics and athletics. They also promote the value of a healthy lifestyle, developing skills for lifelong movement, examining healthy behaviours associated with drugs, good nutrition, selfesteem development, knowledge about sexual health and interpersonal skills. You will study a range of health and physical education subjects including games and sports, rhythmic movements, mental and sexual health, relationships, curriculum and pedagogy (the method and practice of teaching), anatomy and physiology, biomechanics, educational foundations and movement skills. You will also study broader complementary subjects including Aboriginal, Information and Communication Technology, Learners with Exceptional Needs, al Research, Communication, and Risk and Behaviour Management. Graduates of the degree can be employed in both Primary and Secondary educational settings and will develop a range of skills valuable in other health and physical education sectors. The practicals were arguably the most important part of my degree. Having four different practicals across four years meant there was a consistent and conscious effort to improve my teaching and prepare me for the real world. The support I received from both my supervising teachers and my JOSH PERIZZOLO Bachelor of Physical and Health, 2013 PDHPE Teacher/Boys Advisor, Deniliquin High School lecturers/tutors in regards to my practicals was amazing and ensured I was always learning and developing I have been at Deniliquin High School for almost a year now and it is a fantastic school. It is in a small country town with around 8,000 people and, like UOW, it has a real sense of warmth and community

On completion of this degree, you will obtain formal qualifications making you eligible to teach specialised subject areas to year old children in public and private schools. The Master of Teaching (Secondary) produces quality teachers with an understanding of diversity in the classroom and strong connections to school communities. This degree focuses on building teaching skills through a professional experience immersion program in your very first session, and regular professional experience periods throughout the degree. The degree is comprised of English, Mathematics, Science, Visual Arts, Music, Health and Physical ; or two single teaching areas from the subject areas of History, Geography, Business/Economics, Modern Languages Other Than English, Drama, Society and Culture/Aboriginal Studies/Legal Studies.
