12 ROMINA STUDIED A BACHELOR OF EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION AT FLINDERS UNIVERSITY. I JUST LOVE BEING WITH KIDS, TO PICK UP THEIR STRENGTHS, IDENTIFY WHAT S CHALLENGING FOR THEM AND TO HELP THEM MAXIMISE THEIR POTENTIAL. EARLY-CHILDHOOD TEACHER AT ST PETERS WOODLANDS GRAMMAR SCHOOL AND ST ALOYSIUS COLLEGE FLINDERS EDUCATION GRADUATE I enjoy watching them progress, build their confidence and flourish. It s great to see their little faces when they ve done something they couldn t do before. Early childhood education was an easy choice for Romina and she greatly enjoyed the degree. I love studying; I like doing the research, I like writing essays, I enjoy going to the library. I found the course very stimulating. Romina found that the course work helped her to build critical thinking skills, and an understanding of teaching philosophy. It s great to have the theory to help explain teaching methodologies; why you think something is important, or necessary. If a parent asks you why you re doing this or that, you can draw on theory to underpin your explanation. Romina gained great confidence and applied knowledge through the extensive teaching practicums organised by Flinders. In theory, certain things sound really good, but in practice they don t work. The setting and types of children you have under your care play a major role in shaping what happens in the classroom. Teaching practicums are where you determine what does and doesn t work, and get to observe and learn from teachers who ve been in the job for a long time. It s an immensely valuable way to get hands-on experience and see the routines. On graduation, Romina was pleased to be offered work by St Peters Woodlands Grammar School, the school where she did her final teaching practicum. I realised that my degree was something I did for myself. It s learning and experience for life, not just for grades or to get a piece of paper.

22 DAVID FOUND UNIVERSITY A CHALLENGE TO BEGIN WITH, BUT ONE WELL WORTH COMING TO GRIPS WITH. IT LED HIM TO A CAREER IN TEACHING SCIENCE. MATHEMATICS AND PHYSICS TEACHER AT PORT LINCOLN HIGH SCHOOL (SOUTH AUSTRALIA) FLINDERS EDUCATION GRADUATE University was a bit of a culture shock at first you re independent and responsible for your own learning compared to school, and that pushed me. The transition from the country was pretty tough financially, leaving friends and family... My brother was the first one in our extended family to go to university. Our parents worked hard to get us where we are and I didn t want to let them down. Now I ve done honours, have a double degree in education and science, and I m heading into a career as a teacher. David found that the university experience, and the support Flinders provided, helped him to grow, find direction and develop invaluable skills. I ve changed in many different ways at Flinders. My life goals and plans have certainly changed. My work ethic and skills in terms of time management are a lot better. I was forced to address them if I wanted to do well, then those were the skills I needed to work on and improve. I got a lot of advice from other students and teachers. David s time at Flinders and his experience with the University s teaching staff helped inspire him to become the teacher he is today. I had lecturers in maths and physics who were really supportive and willing to put in extra time. They had an open door policy and were very engaging in class. That s what I ll try to focus on when I m in the classroom. In education it s about getting students to realise what they re doing and the importance of it. That s one of the main things I m going to do in my classroom.
