3 A world of experiences from a university with a global reputation Our campuses in Cairns and Townsville are in the heart of northern Queensland, adjacent to the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and the wet and dry Tropics. You will experience our unique and natural wonders. From swimming in warm tropical waters to exploring the ancient Daintree rainforest, JCU provides a World Heritage location unmatched by any other Australian university. Our third main campus is located in Singapore. The campus offers both international and Australian JCU students the opportunity to study in South-East Asia s thriving commercial, technological, financial and academic hub. Many of our students also have the option to study overseas with one of more than 30 JCU exchange partner universities around the world. JCU takes pride in its strong student support network, small class sizes, and well-established links with the community. All our courses offer hands-on practical experience to help make you work-ready. These include professional placements, projects and fieldwork. In 2015, the JCU Townsville City campus was opened in the heart of Townsville City, in Flinders Street. The campus provides a unique and progressive blend of teaching and study space, as well as meeting, networking and consultation facilities, where advanced design, technology and ongoing support services on-site all add to the quality of the environment and study experience. Plans are in place for JCU to also have a Cairns City campus providing similar facilities and opportunities as those available at the Townsville City campus. Our campus in central Brisbane, operated by Russo Higher Education, provides quality undergraduate courses to international students on behalf of JCU. JCU Thursday Island opened in 2003 and offers learning facilities for nursing and education students based in the Torres Strait region. 4 Overview of the Bachelor of Arts at JCU The Bachelor of Arts is a flexible degree that brings together a wide range of subjects from the humanities and social sciences. You can tailor your degree to align with your skills and interests by choosing a particular area of study in your second year. You can also enhance your Bachelor of Arts by enrolling in a joint degree with law, education, science or business to expand your skill-set and increase your job prospects. All our students take three core subjects, two in their first year, and one final year, capstone subject. Our areas of study offer opportunities to study abroad or undertake work placements and research in our Asia Pacific region. 6 Bachelor of Arts Anthropology Bachelor of Arts Archaeology Studying Anthropology will give you a unique set of skills for working with people. In our globalised world, having a deep understanding of cultural and ethnic differences and learning how people s beliefs and practices fit into a wider social, political and economic context is critical for governments and many organisations. Anthropology is a tool for understanding our world, with a focus on culture and social systems (including virtual realities and internet communities). You ll gain skills in communication, research, interviewing, observing, critical reading, data analysis, working in group contexts and more. JCU s Bachelor of Arts majoring in Anthropology will develop your research and analytical skills, along with the practical skills you need for fieldwork in different social and cultural contexts. This knowledge of research methods can be applied in many career settings. Anthropology at JCU focusses on the unique cultural diversity of tropical northern Queensland including Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, Pacific Islander communities, and historical Asian and European migrant communities. Our teaching staff are active researchers, and conduct research in Australia, Papua New Guinea, the Pacific, South America and Asia. After graduating you will have skills for a range of jobs in government, business, and the aid and not-for-profit sector. Roles include international aid or development workers, community development workers, market researchers, human resources officers, charity officers, marketing officers, or equality and diversity officers. Archaeology is the study of past human societies. Archaeologists recover, record, analyse and interpret material remains and other important evidence such as cultural artefacts, food remains, skeletal remains, environmental evidence and landscapes to learn from the past and to safeguard the world s cultural heritage. Archaeologists work with a variety of people on excavations, including: Indigenous groups, academics from related areas, technical staff, people who live in the vicinity of the archaeological sites, labourers and other workers under their direction. They use technologies such as geophysical survey devices, geographic information systems (GIS), web-based communication platforms and global positioning system (GPS) devices. Archaeologists need many practical and analytical skills. Archaeology at JCU makes the most of the tropical northern Queensland environment, investigating the deep past of Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as well as colonial Australian pasts, the archaeology of our Pacific and Asian neighbours, and the origins of early European societies. Graduates from JCU s Bachelor of Arts majoring Archaeology have many different and successful careers. The more training, volunteering and hands-on experience you can gain while studying, the better. If you complete the four-year program you will be able to pursue roles such as consulting archaeologist, field archaeologist and cultural heritage officer. Archaeologists can specialise in areas that may need further study, for example, forensic archaeology, evolutionary archaeology or in particular geographic regions. They also pursue careers in research and university teaching. Many archaeologists in Australia work in the cultural heritage management field and use their expertise to minimise the impacts of mining and development projects on sites of cultural heritage significance. Archaeologists also work as consultants for, mining companies, national parks, Aboriginal land councils or heritage agencies involved with planning and environmental impact assessment. The JCU community in the Archaeology and Anthropology departments have given me opportunities to establish solid professional relationships, including presenting my research at the Australian Archaeological Association s annual conference. You ll develop skills in archaeological site recording and conservation, and participate in field trips at locations around northern Queensland including heritage site excavations, Aboriginal Australian rock art sites and opportunities to participate in South-East Asian field trips. 7 Bachelor of Arts Criminology If you have an interest in the criminal justice system, why people are motivated to commit crime and what strategies are effective to rehabilitate offenders, JCU s Bachelor of Arts majoring in Criminology can lead to a range of interesting careers where you can make a difference. Criminology is a field of social science that focusses on the causes of crime, crime prevention, the systems of social control, and the treatment, rehabilitation and punishment of criminals. JCU developed the Bachelor of Arts majoring in Criminology in consultation with community organisations, Queensland Police Service, Corrective Services, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations, Department of Communities, Education Queensland and local councils. You will gain valuable skills in critical thinking and problem solving. In addition, you ll gain practical and personal skills with participation in a group research project conducted with local agencies in Cairns and Townsville during your third year. Our graduates pursue careers with a variety of organisations including police services, correctional services departments, correctional facilities, juvenile justice organisations, justice departments, community departments and organisations at local, state or federal level, or with private agencies. 9 Bachelor of Arts History Bachelor of Arts Geography Geography explores the interaction between people, natural events and the environment. Most people think of geography as being about maps, compasses and spinning globes, but it is much more than that it is the study of place. By studying the interaction between people and the environment, the work of geographers helps to solve major ecological and environmental problems. Your studies include field observation, laboratory analysis and computing techniques. You will also learn from leading experts and researchers, and benefit from JCU s close links with these leading resource management agencies for placements and project work opportunities: Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority Wet Tropics Management Authority Queensland s Departments of Natural Resources and Mines Queensland Department of Environment and Heritage Protection. Geographers are big picture professionals. Professional historians conduct research into past human activity, including the history of countries, organisations, periods of time, buildings, cultural heritage, particular events, people, and ideas or issues. They examine how people of the past thought, what their motivations might have been and what the consequences of their actions were. They don t just study the event they study what led to the event and the inspirations of the people behind it. You ll study Australian, Asian and world history, looking at political and economic events as well as environmental and cultural change over time. 10 Bachelor of Arts Human Services Bachelor of Arts Indigenous Australian Studies JCU s Bachelor of Arts majoring in Human Services is a professional degree that prepares students for work with vulnerable and marginalised individuals families groups and communities. It is concerned with social policy, community planning and development, education and capacity building, and organisational practice and social responsibility. You will gain practical skills and experience through field trips and individual and group projects. You will be taught by highly-qualified professionals with many years of professional human service experience. Our close research and working relationships with government agencies and local community groups ensure your learning is relevant and practical. You have the flexibility to study some of the subjects in the Human Services major online. 11 Bachelor of Arts Modern Languages Bachelor of Arts Media and Writing JCU s Bachelor of Arts majoring in Media and Writing is taught by widely published authors and journalists. It covers all genres of writing including journalism, fiction and non-fiction, public relations, and writing for the stage and screen. Public Relations (PR): You will learn practical skills in writing media alerts, media releases, backgrounders and other relevant material. You will work in small teams to produce campaigns that demonstrate professional approaches to all major aspects of PR work. Strong writing skills are required by employers for internal and external communications, web content development, report writing, media liaison and more. The Bachelor of Arts majoring in Media and Writing offers practical training in key generic writing skills, and then allows you to learn the skills required for specialist genres as you progress through your course. You will gain an appreciation of effective writing, how to plan, write and edit, and learn the importance of critical reading in the writing process. 15 Get ready Pathway programs Diplomas The Diploma of Higher Education is a good starting point if it s been a while since you studied or you don t have the entry qualifications for your course. It is also a recognised qualification in its own right. The Diploma is your pathway into many of our Bachelor degrees, and takes only one year of full-time study to complete. The Diploma has different study areas to choose from. Each study area has a mix of introductory and first year subjects, so you will find a study area that s right for you. Our Diploma of Higher Education provides you with much more than an online course can offer. As a student studying on campus you ll get all the support you need, we will help you map a realistic career path and you ll experience what life at university is like, so you ll be ready to step up to an undergraduate degree.
