2 JCU Singapore Established in 2003 JCU Singapore is fully owned by James Cook University Australia. The university is ranked in the top 4%* of universities in the world. It established JCU Singapore in 2003 as part of its expressed intent of internationalising its activities and offers a suite of university level programs at the Singapore campus including Business, IT, Psychology and Education. Additionally, JCU Singapore offers courses at the pre-university level, specifically designed to provide pathways for students who are unable to immediately meet university entrance standards. JCU Singapore campus is located at Sims Drive. The campus provides students with access to a full range of facilities and services to support their learning. These include lecture and seminar rooms, library and associated study facilities, computer laboratories, trading simulation room and access to a variety of sporting facilities. In order to ensure that students have ready access to LearnJCU, our technology based learning management system, all students are provided with an ipad** when they commence their course. JCU Inter-campus Mobility Program JCU Singapore provides the opportunity for students to study in Singapore and in Australia and yet still remain as Singapore based students paying their fees in Singapore currency. This is a unique program in Asia because the university operates across both countries. The program is designed to ensure the students get the best possible outcomes from their years of study with the university. EduTrust Star JCU Singapore has the highest level of accreditation in Singapore for private education providers. This is known as EduTrust Star and is only awarded to those institutions which can display the highest possible standard in their academic programs, student experience and in the manner in which they operate. All the courses are internationally recognised and identical to the ones awarded in JCU Australia. Note: International students in Singapore on a Student Pass are not permitted to work. The EduTrust certification scheme is administered by the Council for Private Education (CPE) a statutory board formed in EduTrust requires all students to be covered under a Fee Protection Scheme. In JCU Singapore, this is provided through an insurance protection scheme. Further, EduTrust also requires that the students must be covered under a medical insurance coverage which has provision for hospitalisation, surgery and treatment costs throughout their course duration. 4 Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood Education) Teaching can be one of the most satisfying and rewarding careers. The School of Education at JCU offers world-class teacher education. JCU offers excellent support for teaching students including accessible teaching staff, micro teaching and computer laboratories and excellent library and research resources. Career Prospects: Early childhood teachers work in schools, preschools and childcare centres. Teaching is a portable qualification and teachers are in demand throughout Singapore, Australia and overseas. 5 Our Bachelor of Education is an Australian approved teacher education program. As a JCU Education graduate, you will have the skills and qualifications to seek employment across Australia, Singapore* and beyond. Early childhood is a highly specialised field that focuses on the education of children from birth to age 8 with a special focus on Kindergarten, Prep and Years 1-3. * Based on the current programme outline, graduates from this programme would meet the Early Childhood Development Agency s professional qualification requirements for teacher certification. 6 Jessie Teh Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood Education) The reason why I chose JCU Singapore is because of the multicultural environment that helps me to broaden my perspective, which is important as an educator. 8 Master of Education The Master of Education is a postgraduate course consisting of 36 credit points. Students complete core studies that include a research project and a major in a chosen area. The course provides students with extended knowledge and skills in Education. The Master of Education provides both teachers and graduates from non-teaching backgrounds with the opportunity to further their qualifications for professional development. This course does not lead to teacher registration. Career Prospects: This course does not lead to teacher registration but teachers will be able to draw on the extended knowledge and skills offered in the course to further their careers by taking on leadership and management roles. The course will advance graduates professionally through a range of learning and research outcomes. These include (but are not limited to) advanced knowledge of recent developments, discourses and debates in the field of Education and/or associated area of professional practice, together with research skills, advanced speaking, reading, writing, listening, collaborating and advocacy skills. Such skills are readily transferable across a diverse range of leadership and management settings. Master of Education (Leadership and Management) Skills Development The Leadership and Management major will advance graduates professionally through a range of learning and research outcomes. Such skills are readily transferable across a diverse range of leadership and management settings. Students in this major will: Acquire knowledge of concepts, theories and models which underpin current successful educational leadership and management practices in schools and school systems; Critically analyse issues and literature concerning school improvement, effectiveness, review and evaluation; Develop strategies to analyse and reflect upon human relations issues in contemporary work environments; Integrate interpersonal skills to develop a clearer understanding of relevant issues; Employ critical analysis of key work issues in the new economy such as global integration, workplace diversity, and the impact of technology; and Explore and appreciate the impact of these issues on your own individual career management strategies. Master of Education (Global Contexts) Skills Development Studying the Global Contexts major enhances your expertise in transnational education, international employment relationships, and global practices. Students majoring in Global Contexts will: Examine the phenomenon of development in Asia- Pacific contexts through an anthropological lens; Acquire the ability to assess the social and cultural impacts of globalisation and transnationalism, natural resource development and the introduction of new technologies; Understand the international, national, and relevant state frameworks, statements, policies, curriculum initiatives and resources regarding education for sustainability; and Evaluate educational curriculum and teaching practices in relevant professional settings. 8

Course Requirements Each 3-credit-point subject requires a minimum of 130 hours of study time per trimester including one 25-hour intensive contact block. 9

10 Master of Guidance and Counselling Counselling remains a growth occupation. The course is designed for those who wish to pursue professional careers in Counselling as well as those who would like to develop highly effective interpersonal skills at work generally. The course intake is likely to be diverse and students may represent a range of working backgrounds and disciplines, with a shared goal of refining their skills of communication and applying such insights gained within their own role and work settings. This course is accredited by the Australian Counselling Association (ACA) in Australia and in Singapore by the Singapore Association for Counselling (SAC), giving graduates the ability to pursue careers in both countries as well as internationally. Duration: 28 months part-time Course Structure: 3 trimesters per year take 1-4 subjects per trimester Intakes: March, July, November Total Tuition Fees: S$34,386 (Domestic)* *Fees apply to all Singapore residents (Singapore Citizens, Permanent Residents and all pass holders excluding Student s Pass) Note: All course fees include prevailing 7% Goods and Services Tax (GST) Students will pay the tuition fees in equal instalments. This program is available to Singapore citizens, Singapore PR or Dependant Pass Holders Career Prospects: The Master of Guidance and Counselling degree equips graduates with skills, knowledge, understanding and personal awareness to become professional counsellors in a variety of locations and settings. For those who do not wish to pursue the professional counselling route, the Course will advance them professionally by equipping them with a sophisticated range and depth of interpersonal skills, knowledge, understanding and personal awareness which can be applied to a diverse range of work settings. 10

11 Study Program Students are required to complete 12 subjects (36 credit points) based on availability and scheduling. 8 core subjects (24 credit points): Foundations of Counselling Theory Foundations of Counselling Practice Advanced Counselling Assessment Atypical Development Career and Leisure Guidance & Counselling Reflective Practice Research in Guidance & Counselling Practicum in Guidance and Counselling + 4 subjects (12 credit points) from the Master of Education offerings Advanced Standing Students may be granted advanced standing if, in addition to meeting the entry requirements, they have a minimum of two years full time relevant working experience. Course Requirements Each 3 credit point subject requires a minimum of 130 hours of study time per trimester including one 25-hour intensive contact block. Practicum consists of 130 hours of practice (100 hours minimum face-to-face counselling) over a period of 2 trimesters. Students take the responsibility for sourcing their own practicum placements. The university supports them in this process and meets supervision requirement costs (within university guidelines). 11

12 Felicia Hong Master of Guidance and Counselling The MGC course has surpassed my expectations and is one of the most important paths that I have taken in life. The end result of my studies is that I am able to apply what I have learnt in class to everyday professional and personal life. Most importantly, I now have the ability to engage in introspection and constant self-improvement. The smaller class sizes allow for better participation and encourage lecturer-student interaction. Throughout the course, I have felt very supported by all the friendly staff of JCU! 12

13 Graduate Certificate of Career Development This course is designed for those who want to work in career education, career guidance and career counselling. The Career Industry Council of Australia (CICA) has endorsed the Graduate Certificate of Career Development delivered by James Cook University as meeting the Professional Standards for Australian Career Development Practitioners. The Graduate Certificate of Career Development offers a pathway into the Master of Guidance and Counselling for those who do not meet the entry requirement concerning an appropriate degree. Study Program Students are required to complete 3 core subjects (12 credit points) Foundations of Counselling Theory Careers and Leisure Guidance & Counselling Career Development Portfolio* *This subject consists of 6 credit points, equal to 2 subjects of 3 credit points each. Students who have successfully completed a Master of Guidance and Counselling degree or postgraduate equivalent may apply for advanced standing for the core subjects Foundations of Counselling Theory and Career and Leisure Guidance and Counselling. Career Prospects: Graduates will have a specialisation in career development counselling.
