Civil Engineering graduates work for government departments, public utilities and private companies providing planning and designs for buildings, roads, bridges, dams, ports, water supply and treatment systems. 2. Chemical Engineering graduates work in minerals processing, chemical production and industrial processes, and in sectors such as water, minerals, energy, pharmaceuticals, chemicals and food. 3. Electrical and Electronic Engineering graduates work in industries that consume power, such as power utilities, mines or mills, as well as with providers of telecommunication systems, computer products and electronic instrumentation. 4. 4 An overview of Planning at JCU There is high demand for planners, and our professionally accredited Bachelor of Planning helps prepare you for a rewarding career with skills that can be used in Australia and overseas. Your base in tropical Cairns or Townsville gives you unique access to the challenges of planning for an area surrounded by delicate eco-systems. We will teach you how to plan functional cities, thriving regions and healthy urban environments that enhance social, environmental and economic wellbeing. The course covers areas such as urban geography and design, population studies and economy, geographic information systems, regional planning, environmental impact assessment, Indigenous environmental management, legislation, and disaster planning. As you progress through your degree you will be able to integrate your knowledge in practical workplace settings through a wide range of industry placement opportunities. Engineering at JCU is offered as a four-year Bachelor Honours degree, which is accredited by Engineers Australia. A Bachelor Honours degree develops advanced knowledge and research skills. Our graduates are highly sought after by employers, with many students finding employment in their final year of study. You will start your course with a common first year of study, followed by a choice of engineering specialisations when you reach your second year. You can also select a minor stream (four subjects) based on your career aspirations. Engineering is only available on the Townsville campus from your second year onwards, with the exception of our new major Electronic Systems and Internet of Things which is just available in Cairns. You will have the opportunity to take industrybased placements as you progress into your third and fourth years this gives you valuable industry experience and contacts. 6 Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) Chemical Engineering Chemical Engineering is diverse and interesting. Chemical Engineers are concerned with the environment and safety as founding principles for economic development. They develop safe, efficient processes to convert raw materials into useful products, as well as researching and developing new technologies. They plan specifications for full-scale production, taking into account costs, market needs, transportation, and sustainability. Local industries actively support this course by providing advice on content, access to industrial plants, specialist guest lecturers, and cuttingedge design and research projects. Our research has a strong focus on issues that are important to the region s economy. Course highlights Research: Your final year includes a research and process design project, where you design a full-scale processing plant. Relevant: You will have the opportunity to take industry-based placements as you progress into your third and fourth years this gives you valuable industry experience and contacts. Hands-on: Laboratory and design work, and the opportunity to work in teams with students in other engineering disciplines are key. Career opportunities This course leads to career opportunities world-wide. Developing and testing new and alternative environmentally-friendly fuels, is a growth area for chemical engineers. The average starting salary for a Chemical Engineer with less than five years experience is $65,000 per year. Although my major is Chemical Engineering, there are crossdiscipline subjects in the degree which means Mechanical and Civil Engineering students share my classes. As a result I have gained an understanding and appreciation of other aspects of Engineering which are very important real-world skills. Roads, railways, airports, buildings, ports, water supply systems, waste disposal systems, dams and mines all require creative solutions from civil engineers. By designing the most effective way the built environment can interact with the natural environment, civil engineers make our towns, cities, suburbs and houses better places to live. Course highlights Real-world: Leading professional engineers teach design subjects emphasising real world structural, geotechnical, transportation and environmental engineering challenges and solutions. Research: Complete a one year research-based thesis project. Final-year thesis projects are often sponsored by industry or are related to current research projects. The future will see the interconnectivity of everything from urban transport to medical devices to household appliances, smart watches and other wearable technologies, home electronics and appliances, cars and heart monitoring implants. JCU s Engineering degree, majoring in Electronic Systems and Internet of Things, will produce new talent to both create and power this innovative approach to the information revolution. Course highlights JCU s Electronic Systems and IoT is the first of its kind in Australia, and will combine the study of electronic engineering with Internet technologies, wireless communications, sensor devices, industrial design and cloud computing. Throughout this four year degree, new creative, hands-on teaching practices will be used to ensure that your learning will be innovative, creative, and practical and business focussed. 9 Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) Mechanical Engineering Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) Joint Degrees Mechanical engineers use problem-solving skills to design, create and improve systems and machinery used for domestic, public and industrial purposes. Mechanical engineering applies the principles of physics for analysis, design, manufacturing, and maintenance of everything you think of as a machine from bicycles to robots to supersonic jets. A particular strength of Mechanical Engineering at JCU is the application of advanced computational techniques and incorporation of the Formula SAE race car design project throughout the degree. Visit: jcu.edu.au/2016/planning The proximity to family and friends in Townsville was a key factor in choosing planning at JCU. As part of a subject about creating sustainable communities, we travelled to banana farms near Mareeba and Lakeland Downs, explored parts of Cooktown Shire, as well as visiting the Country of Willie Gordon outside Hopevale (Guurrbi Rock Art Tours) and Marilyn and Peter Wallace at Shipton Flats (Bana Yarralji). I doubt whether we could have visited such a diverse array of natural landscapes if I lived in any other part of the country. 11 Get ready - pathway programs How to apply Diplomas The Diploma of Higher Education is a good starting point if it s been a while since you studied or you don t have the entry qualifications for your course. It is also a recognised qualification in its own right. The Diploma is your pathway into many of our Bachelor degrees, and takes only one year of full-time study to complete. The Diploma has different study areas to choose from. Each study area has a mix of introductory and first year subjects, so you will find a study area that s right for you. Business Studies Engineering & Applied Science General Studies Health Information Technology Science Society & Culture. Our Diploma of Higher Education provides you with much more than an online course can offer. As a student studying on campus you ll get all the support you need, we will help you map a realistic career path and you ll experience what life at university is like, so you ll be ready to step up to an undergraduate degree. On successful completion of the Diploma of Higher Education you can continue into an Engineering degree, and you may be able to receive some credit for successfully completed subjects. You can also transfer to JCU if you are currently studying at another university. All applications for undergraduate degrees at JCU are made through the Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre (QTAC). You will need to check the entry requirements for your course on the JCU website.
