1 MASTER OF CLINICAL NURSING ADVANCING PRACTICE CLINICAL IMPACT
2 School of Nursing The School of Nursing at the University of Adelaide brings together nursing clinicians and academics committed to advancing nursing as a practice and as a discipline. The School of Nursing is one of seven Schools that form part of the Faculty of Health Sciences. Since its establishment in 1995, the integration of excellence in clinical practice through research and education has been its focus. In 2006, the innovative undergraduate program was launched. The three year program focuses on the integration of theory and practice, which is supported by extensive clinical placements. The School s affiliation with other health disciplines within the Faculty of Health Sciences adds considerable strength to this program. Staff of the School are actively encouraged to integrate teaching with research. Students are exposed to teaching and teaching activities that are interactive and relevant to practice. Students are encouraged to develop skills in nursing practice, in nursing inquiry and in the ability to debate and critique within the broader health arena. A Progressive School From the start, the School of Nursing has been one of Australia s most progressive nursing education providers. Alongside high quality research programs, the School offers innovative undergraduate programs and a wide range of specialist Graduate Certificates, or options of Graduate Diplomas in Nursing Science, Master of Nursing Science and Doctoral degrees in nursing. A Collaborative School The School s position within the University of Adelaide is strengthened by our internal relationships with other healthrelated Schools. The School s partnerships with industry stakeholders strengthen the School s ability to contribute to clinicallyfocused teaching and research. In addition, partnerships strengthen the School s ability to respond to the needs of the profession and community.
3 The Program Clinically focused Highly skilled staff with established reputations Creative approaches to learning and teaching Clinically Focused Teaching The School of Nursing s philosophy of learning can be most fully realised through the integration of extensive clinical experience in its programs. Learning from nurses in action exposes the student to knowledge of the technical, human and political bases of nursing practice. The School of Nursing contends that nursing practice and its practitioners are rich in this knowledge and expertise. It is through the encounter with these experts that students discover and assimilate in-depth understanding essential to nursing. Expert clinical teaching is achieved through the appointment of a large number of highly regarded nursing clinicians as clinical lecturers and tutors, senior lecturers and associate professors. These titleholders occupy demanding clinical positions in health agencies affiliated or associated with the University. Students work alongside named clinical tutors in practice settings, as full, contributing members of the clinical team. The School of Nursing is committed to high quality, innovative teaching; and academic staff have established reputations in both their own specialist fields and in creative approaches to teaching and learning. All academic staff hold higher degrees, and most hold doctorates in nursing. The School has in place a systematic strategy to develop innovative curriculum and to continuously evaluate teaching effectiveness. The valuing of nursing practice is central to all of the School s teaching. Strategies to integrate practice and knowledge by practitioners and academic staff are constantly being pursued. The School of Nursing believes that an understanding of nursing is best achieved through the interpretation of extensive, guided experience and the rigorous pursuit of nursing knowledge through research and scholarship. Change Your Career The Master of Clinical Nursing is aimed at graduates seeking a career in nursing who have a three year degree in another discipline. Applicants who have diverse academic, work and life experiences are encouraged to apply. The program will provide professional knowledge, skills and attitudes that underpin the role of the Registered Nurse and develop competencies for practice as determined by the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council. On successful completion of the Master of Clinical Nursing graduates will be eligible to register with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia. The Master of Clinical Nursing is structured over two years of full-time study to provide in-depth theory and integrated clinical placements in hospital and community settings. The first year provides foundational, theoretical and professional concepts, and fundamental knowledge and skills of nursing practice. Contemporary nursing care is introduced in a variety of health care contexts. The second year of the program advances professional and contemporary knowledge and skills moving to more complex health problems. The Clinical Nursing Practice course in each semester gives students opportunities to experience nursing and to apply professional, foundational, and contemporary knowledge and skills in practice within various contexts of health care. Students are supported in clinical experiences by professional nurses and educators.

Students will be liable for the tuition fees current in each year. Please visit for more information. Financial Assistance Scholarships There are few University of Adelaide scholarships available each year, and competition is keen. Unless an applicant has a high level of academic achievement, it is difficult to obtain one. There is no separate application process for scholarships, and all program applications are assessed at the same time for their eligibility for scholarship support. For more information, visit It is strongly advised that students seeking scholarship support look at the Royal College of Nursing Australia available scholarships. For more information, visit HECS-HELP In the Australian higher education system, Australian citizens, New Zealand citizens and the holders of an Australian permanent visa are classified as domestic students. Most undergraduate students are in Commonwealth supported places. Commonwealth supported students are generally required to contribute to the cost of their higher education through a student contribution. The Australian Government also contributes to part of the cost. The Higher Education Loan Program (HELP) allows eligible students to defer their student contribution (through HECS-HELP) and repay it later through the taxation system. Some Commonwealth supported students are not eligible for HECS-HELP. A Commonwealth Supported Place is a higher education place for which the Australian Government provides funding to your higher education provider (provider) towards the cost of your education. The Australian Government allocates a number of Commonwealth Supported Places to providers each year. If you wish to be a Commonwealth supported student, you must enrol on or before the census date. For the first unit in which you enrol that is part of your course : complete and submit a signed Request for Commonwealth support and HECS-HELP form to your provider. If you are eligible for HECS-HELP, you must: give your tax file number (TFN) to your provider if you intend to take out a HECS- HELP loan for your student contribution amount make any up front payment to your provider that you intend to make pay all of your required student contribution amount up front to your provider if you do not give your TFN to your provider. If you are not eligible for HECS-HELP you must: pay all of your student contribution up front to your provider (you will not receive the HECS-HELP discount and you cannot take out a HECS-HELP loan).
