3 Top 5 reasons to study Psychology 1. A Psychology qualification gives you critical-thinking skills, insights into relationships and an understanding of effective communication, which contribute to life-long professional and personal development. 2. Psychologists learn ways to manage real-world issues such as ways to reduce stress, increase memory and how to make informed decisions. 3. Psychology teaches you about human growth and development and gives you skills to enhance an individual s learning, overcome their problems and improve their well-being. 4. Psychology graduates learn research methods and how to interpret statistics, which are transferable skills that contribute to career success. 5. Psychology is a good foundation for careers in a diversity of areas such as counselling, social services, education, sport and exercise, and management. A world of experiences from a university with a global reputation Our campuses in Cairns and Townsville are in the heart of northern Queensland, adjacent to the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and the wet and dry tropics. Each campus offers a vibrant study experience with award-winning teachers and modern facilities. You will benefit from small group teaching, extensive clinical training, and a superior learning location. Our teaching has a unique regional focus that you will not find anywhere else in Australia. Our new $44m Clinical Practice Building is located on campus in Townsville and provides medical and health students with a primary centre for clinical practice work involving public patients. Whether you study in Cairns, Townsville, or in a regional area you will experience extensive hands-on clinical practice and develop specialist knowledge in the areas of rural, remote and tropical health during your placements. Our study centre in Mackay is located in new cuttingedge research and teaching facilities based in the Mackay and Mater hospitals and provides an authentic learning experience for our medical, nursing and dentistry students. Nursing students can also study at JCU s Mount Isa Centre for Rural and Remote Health, which offers courses with a special emphasis on rural, remote and Indigenous healthcare. JCU Thursday Island opened in 2003 and offers learning facilities for nursing and education students based in the Torres Strait region. In 2015, the JCU Townsville City campus was opened in the heart of Townsville City, in Flinders Street. The campus provides a unique and progressive blend of teaching and study space, as well as meeting, networking and consultation facilities, where advanced design, technology and ongoing support services on-site all add to the quality of the environment and study experience. Plans are in place for JCU to also have a Cairns City campus providing similar facilities and opportunities as those available at the Townsville City campus. Our third main campus is located in Singapore. The campus offers both international and Australian JCU students the opportunity to study in South-East Asia s thriving commercial, technological, financial and academic hub. Our campus in central Brisbane, operated by Russo Higher Education, provides quality undergraduate courses to international students, on behalf of JCU. Many of our students have the option to study overseas with one of more than 30 JCU exchange partner universities around the world. James Cook University is committed to building strong and mutually beneficial partnerships that work towards closing the employment, health and education gap for Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Our students come from many backgrounds, promoting a rich cultural and experiential diversity on campus. We acknowledge the Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the Traditional Owners of the lands and waters where we operate our business. We honour the unique cultural and spiritual relationship to the land, waters and seas of First Australian peoples and their continuing and rich contribution to James Cook University (JCU) and Australian society. We also pay respect to ancestors and Elders past, present and future. 4 Psychological Science The Bachelor of Psychological Science is a 3-year course (full time), available in Cairns and Townsville. Our staff have a research focus that includes forensic psychology, social psychology, mental health, stress, cognitive sciences, personality assessment, ageing and geriatric mental health. We encourage our students to actively engage in current research, and we host a series of annual seminars which are presented by national and international experts. Our tutorial classes are among the smallest in the country, providing the opportunity for personalised assistance, and we have well-equipped, modern facilities in Cairns and Townsville, including a fully functioning psychology clinic located on our Townsville campus. We also have active psychology clubs and organisations on both campuses, where you meet fellow students with similar interests and share your experiences. If you wish to become a fully registered psychologist you must complete an accredited four year course, such as our Bachelor of Psychological Science (Honours), plus two years of supervised practice in the field. Honours study is by invitation, and is dependent on successful results in the three-year course. Honours involves an additional year of theoretical study and advanced topics. You can expand your options and apply to study a combined degree with business (except the accounting major) or Sport and Exercise Science, over four years full-time. 5 Explore your future Studying psychology satisfies my interest in understanding human-thought processes and motivations, and I like that it challenges my previously held beliefs. As a mature-age student with a family, JCU s small class sizes and course flexibility suited my life-study balance. The course gave me new skills and confidence, and I established social and professional networks that will be beneficial in the future. Since completing my degree in 2013, I have worked primarily as a Youth Worker with young people in out-of-home care (foster care) and briefly with Queensland Corrective Services as a Probation and Parole Case Manager. I am returning to James Cook University in 2015 to begin my Master of Psychology (Clinical).
