2 2 MASTER OF TEACHING The Master of Teaching degree at the University of Sydney is a professional qualification that will enable you to become an accredited teacher in Australia, and enjoy the opportunity to teach around the world. The program is open to anyone who already has an undergraduate degree. With 40 days teaching practice in schools, a 45-day internship, and professional research project, this program offers a hands-on experience that will ensure you develop the confidence, knowledge and skills to become a successful teacher at early childhood, primary, secondary and school counselling levels. 3 3 MASTER OF TEACHING (EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION) This program qualifies you to teach children from birth to five years in pre-primary childcare and early childhood education settings. The curriculum integrates training for general and special early-childhood education of infants, toddlers and preschool children so you will be prepared for teaching in diverse and inclusive early-childhood environments, including schools and other community settings. As a graduate, you will be equipped with the knowledge and training to become an outstanding early childhood teacher, decision maker, ethical leader, and theoretical and practical thinker. 4 4 MASTER OF TEACHING (PRIMARY) This program prepares you for teaching all primary-school subjects, from Kindergarten to Year 6 (K-6). As well as learning about the policies that shape teaching in Australia and overseas, you will attend lectures and complete assignments about issues in teaching, learning and curriculum in the school years from Kindergarten through to the Higher School Certificate. The coursework covers teaching in multilingual classes, including teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL). 5 5 MASTER OF TEACHING (SECONDARY) This program qualifies you to become a teacher in high school from Year 7 to Year 12. You will have the opportunity to specialise in one or two teaching areas, depending on the subjects you wish to teach. If you would like to teach science, mathematics or languages, you may study these as double method areas this means you will not need to qualify in a second teaching area. 6 6 SCHOOL COUNSELLING This course prepares you to become a school counsellor while also qualifying as a teacher in one area of the secondary school curriculum. You will need to undertake coursework and professional experience in school counselling and one of the secondary school program curriculum areas. The varied, interesting and rewarding role of a school counsellor includes: assessing individual children, including children who have disabilities working with children and adolescents who have difficulties in learning and/or behaviour counselling children and adolescents who have mental health and/or behavioural issues interviewing and working with parents and teachers engaging in preventative and proactive school programs with children, teachers and parents researching the needs of children and adolescents participating in up-to-date professional development. Note: there are additional prerequisites for entry to the Master of Teaching (School Counselling). See page 7. Teaching training is part of the preparation to become a school counsellor. However, this degree is specifically designed to prepare a suitably qualified student of psychology to work in the school setting as a school counsellor, rather than as a classroom teacher. In NSW, accredited school counsellors are qualified teachers who also have postgraduate qualifications in psychology (honours or the equivalent of a fourth year of study in psychology) sufficient for eligibility for registration with the Psychology Board of Australia. 7 7 FEES, ENTRY REQUIREMENTS AND HOW TO APPLY FEES As an indication, fees in 2014 were: Domestic students: $2952 per semester International students: $31,500 per year Fees are subject to change for ENTRY REQUIREMENTS To be eligible to apply for the Master of Teaching (Early Childhood), (Primary) or (Secondary), you need to have: completed a first degree at an accredited university, for example, a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science with a good academic record proficiency in the use of English (oral and written) and mathematics. Good oral communication is essential. If English is not your first language, you will need to provide proof of English language proficiency for the Master of Teaching (Secondary), you need to have completed sufficient subjects in your first degree to meet the prerequisites for the one or two secondary school curriculum areas you plan to specialise in. The Master of Teaching (School Counselling) has the same conditions of entry as those listed above, but in addition, you need to have: completed a fourth year of tertiary studies in psychology that has met the standards required of the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC), for example, a Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) sufficient tertiary studies to meet the prerequisites for one secondary school curriculum area. Note: a psychology major is a suitable prerequisite for the curriculum area: Society and Culture, with the addition of geoscience in Year 1, Semester 1 of the program. HOW TO APPLY The Master of Teaching has just one intake each year, for studies commencing in Semester 1. For Semester 1, 2015 intake, applications open: Friday 29 August You can apply through our website: sydney.edu.au/education/mteach Click on the relevant program you wish to apply for in the Applications for 2015 section. During the application process, a Unique Application Identification Number will be allocated to you. Please record this number as it is required for future access to the Applications Portal if you receive an offer of enrolment. Applications close: Friday 31 October 4pm. Complete applications received after 31 October will only be considered if places are still available. No guarantees will be given for applications received after this closing date.
