Midwives can work in hospitals, birthing centres, community centres and privately, in women s homes. 4. Nursing and Midwifery graduates are highly valued and the qualifications are highly portable. 5. It s possible to do paid work in hospitals and other healthcare facilities while studying. A world of experiences from a university with a global reputation Our campuses in Cairns and Townsville are in the heart of northern Queensland, adjacent to the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park and the wet and dry tropics. Each campus offers a vibrant study experience with award-winning teachers and modern facilities. You will benefit from small group teaching, extensive clinical training, and a superior learning location. Our teaching has a unique regional focus that you will not find anywhere else in Australia. Our new $44m Clinical Practice Building is located on campus in Townsville and provides medical and health students with a primary centre for clinical practice work involving public patients. Whether you study in Cairns, Townsville, or in a regional area you will experience extensive hands-on clinical practice and develop specialist knowledge in the areas of rural, remote and tropical health during your placements. Our study centre in Mackay is located in new cutting-edge research and teaching facilities based in the Mackay and Mater hospitals and provides an authentic learning experience for our medical, nursing and dentistry students. Nursing students can also study at JCU s Mount Isa Centre for Rural and Remote Health, which offers courses with a special emphasis on rural, remote and Indigenous healthcare. JCU Thursday Island opened in 2003 and offers learning facilities for nursing and education students based in the Torres Strait region. In 2015, the JCU Townsville City campus was opened in the heart of Townsville City, in Flinders Street. The campus provides a unique and progressive blend of teaching and study space, as well as meeting, networking and consultation facilities, where advanced design, technology and ongoing support services on-site all add to the quality of the environment and study experience. Plans are in place for JCU to also have a Cairns City campus providing similar facilities and opportunities as those available at the Townsville City campus. Our third main campus is located in Singapore. The campus offers both international and Australian JCU students the opportunity to study in South-East Asia s thriving commercial, technological, financial and academic hub. Our campus in central Brisbane, operated by Russo Higher Education, provides quality undergraduate courses to international students, on behalf of JCU. Many of our students have the option to study overseas with one of more than 30 JCU exchange partner universities around the world. James Cook University is committed to building strong and mutually beneficial partnerships that work towards closing the employment, health and education gap for Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Our students come from many backgrounds, promoting a rich cultural and experiential diversity on campus. We acknowledge the Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the Traditional Owners of the lands and waters where we operate our business. We honour the unique cultural and spiritual relationship to the land, waters and seas of First Australian peoples and their continuing and rich contribution to James Cook University (JCU) and Australian society. We also pay respect to ancestors and Elders past, present and future. It involves an additional year of full-time study and includes a research project. I chose to study Nursing because I wanted a career where I could help people. I was attracted to JCU because the School of Nursing and Midwifery has a solid reputation and the Cairns campus offers a beautiful study environment. If you are passionate about your study, people within the Nursing school will help you achieve your best. Some of our clinical placements had me working in a range of settings around Queensland, which was very exciting as it gave me hands-on experience with tropical health issues. 7 Bachelor of Nursing Science Bachelor of Midwifery Midwives work in partnership with women to provide continuity of midwifery care throughout pregnancy, labour, birth and the postnatal period. Midwives consider it a privilege to be part of a woman s experience when a new life is welcomed into her family. This unique role, while demanding, is extremely satisfying. If you re interested in nursing as a career, then you might have considered studying midwifery. If you re a caring person, fascinated by the birth process and want to work with women, then you may be suited to midwifery. Course highlights JCU s Bachelor of Nursing Science-Bachelor of Midwifery degree has an emphasis on tropical health issues and health care for rural, remote and Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Highlights include: Extensive practical experience: You will develop clinical skills from your first year and complete a total of 47 weeks of supervised clinical placements in our network of partner hospitals, health centres and community facilities around northern Queensland. You will graduate with work-ready skills for a range of health settings in cities, towns and remote regions. 10 Enquiries jcu.edu.au Combined qualification: With skills in nursing and midwifery, you will be qualified to register as both a nurse and a midwife on successful completion of the course. Career opportunities Employment prospects for midwives are expected to grow strongly as the large number of midwives over 45 years of age begin to retire.* As a midwife you can work in a range of settings including hospitals, clinics and community health centres, as well as non-government and development organisations such as the Red Cross. Course overview JCU s Bachelor of Nursing Science-Bachelor of Midwifery degree is based on a philosophical foundation of woman and person-centered care. The course combines humanistic approaches of care and applied science studies with hands-on clinical experience. Our Bachelor of Nursing Science-Bachelor of Midwifery prepares you to be competent in critical decision making and collaboration with other members of the health care team, and be able to carry out technical procedures and to offer both nursing and midwifery care in hospitals and community settings. You will learn about cultural perspectives that will help you provide appropriate care in diverse and underserved communities, including Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Professional recognition The Bachelor of Nursing Science-Bachelor of Midwifery degree is accredited with the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council (ANMAC). *Joboutlook.gov.au Course overview CAMPUS: MODE DURATION Townsville On campus MIDYEAR ENTRY: Not available OP/RANK: 9/82 QTAC CODES: PREREQUISITES: AQF LEVEL: 7 4 years full time or 5 years part time (only Year 1 is available part time - by negotiation) English; also recommended Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics FURTHER ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Successful applicants require Hepatitis B immunisation, current Queensland First Aid and CPR certificates plus a Suitability to Work with Children (Blue Card) and an Australian Federal Police check before undertaking placement. Find out more on Page 12 COURSE STRUCTURE For detailed information on subjects and course structure, visit jcu.edu.au/2016/nursing I love the hands-on, practical side of JCU s Midwifery course. While employed as an Indigenous Health worker, I was encouraged by other health professionals, including a midwife, to study at university. I always wanted to further my education but wasn t sure in what area. They suggested I do a short, maternity health-care course designed to skill nurses and health workers in remote areas. I did the course and loved it, so I applied to QTAC and was accepted at JCU. I love the hands-on, practical side of JCU s Midwifery course. I am learning about assessing a woman through the stages of labour, the techniques required to help her, and the newborn examination. It is a miracle how a baby is formed and watching that new life being born. JCU has great lecturers who are very informative and their depth of knowledge inspires me to reach the same level.
