About the Conference Welcome The Georgia Chapter of the American College of Cardiology (ACC) would like to invite you to attend the Annual Scientific Meeting for Cardiac Care Associates. This meeting reflects our dedication to reducing cardiovascular risk and improving patient outcomes. Registered Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Physician Assistants, and Clinical Pharmacists should participate in order to enhance their knowledge, improve assessment skills, and network with colleagues. At this meeting, you will have the opportunity to learn more about the latest research and clinical guideline updates in cardiovascular medicine and apply this information to your own clinical practice. The conference registration desk will be open from 7:00am - 5:30pm on Friday. The program will begin promptly at 7:45am and continue until 5:30pm. Speakers and Objectives Leslie Dotson Jaggers, Pharm.D, BCPS Dr. Jaggers is the cardiovascular clinical pharmacist at Piedmont Atlanta Hospital where she has practiced for the past 14 years. Prior to joining Piedmont, she was with The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists where her responsibilities included coordinating development of evidencebased guidelines in various therapeutic areas. She also practiced for 5 years as Clinical Supervisor for Adult Medicine at Shands Hospital at the University of Florida where she was also adjunct Clinical Associate Professor with the UF College of Pharmacy. Leslie obtained her BS and Doctor of Pharmacy degrees from the University of Georgia and completed a two-year clinical pharmacy residency at the University of Kentucky Medical Center. She obtained board certification as a pharmacotherapy specialist in 1996. In her current role, Dr. Jaggers is extensively involved in evidence-based drug policy and protocol development for cardiovascular services with a significant focus on the clinical use of antithrombotic therapy. Other experiences include implementation and management of an outpatient anticoagulation management service. She is the pharmacist team member of a comprehensive heart failure disease management program that was recently expanded to include heart transplant. Current Issues in Anticoagulation Management Safety First Objectives: Discuss the pharmacology of new oral anti-coagulant options to prevent thrombosis and decrease risk of bleeding complications. Michael Halkos, MD, MSc, FACC, FACS Dr. Halkos is an Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Emory University. He has been a leader in the field of robotic coronary artery bypass and hybrid coronary revascularization and has developed the program at Emory into one of the largest in the country. His other primary interest is in mitral valve surgery, specifically robotic mitral valve surgery. He also has an NIH-funded grant in stroke research aimed at reducing the incidence of stroke after cardiac surgery. He currently serves as the Associate Program Director for the Integrated Cardiothoracic Surgery Residency Program at School of Medicine. He practices at Emory Saint Joseph s Hospital and Hospital Midtown. Patricia Keegan, NP Ms. Keegan is the Nurse Practitioner for the Structural and Valvular Cardiology Center at Emory Healthcare in. Patricia has been at Emory Healthcare for seven years including four years of Cardiac nursing and two years in her current position. Patricia holds a Masters in Nursing from The University of Alabama at Birmingham in addition to her BSN from Georgia State University. Mitral Valve Disease Diagnosis, Management and Developments in Therapy Objectives: Develop functional assessment skills and discuss appropriate medical therapy in order to effectively manage mitral valve disease patients. Summarize the latest available therapies for mitral valve disease and appropriately refer patients for these treatments. Jerre Lutz, MD, FACC Dr. Lutz is Associate Professor of Medicine at Emory Healthcare. He has been at Emory since 1979 and has held positions at Grady (1979-82), Crawford Long (1982-84) and Emory campus since 1984. He has been CCU Director (1984-2011) and a member of the Heart Transplant team since 1986. He is now Director of Outpatient clinics and has been teaching ECG s to residents and fellows for more than 25 years. 12-Lead ECG Reading Skill Update Objectives: Discuss 12 -Lead ECG interpretation and cardiac rhythm assessment and differentiation. Review and interpret various rhythms to differentiate among complicated cardiac disturbances. Arthur Reitman, MD, FACC Dr. Reitman, originally from New Orleans, is a board certified cardiologist who graduated with a BA in English Literature from Washington University in St. Louis in 1991. He earned his medical degree from Louisiana State University, New Orleans, in 1995. After completing his internal medicine internship and residency at Tufts Affiliated Hospitals, he went on to a cardiology fellowship at Brown University, Providence, RI Dr. Reitman completed an interventional fellowship at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City in 2002 and is board certified in Interventional Cardiology. Special interests include complex coronary atherosclerotic disease, including atherectomy devices, novel antiplatelet therapeutics and nuclear cardiology. Dr. Reitman is currently on staff at WellStar Cobb, Douglas, Kennestone and Paulding hospitals. He currently serves as the medical director of the Catheterization Lab at WellStar Kennestone Hospital. Percutaneous Intervention New Innovations and Management Issues Objectives: Discuss guideline-based medical and interventional therapy options related to coronary atherosclerotic heart disease and percutaneous coronary intervention. 5

Speakers and Objectives 6 Laurence Sperling, MD, FACC, FAHA, FACP Dr. Sperling is the Founder and Director of The Center for Heart Disease Prevention at Emory. He is currently Professor of Medicine (Cardiology) at the School of Medicine. He was awarded The American College of Cardiology Harry B. Graf Career Development Award for Heart Disease Prevention and The American Heart Association Council on Clinical Cardiology Scholarship for Physical Activity and Public Health in 2001. Dr. Sperling is originally from New York. He received his undergraduate degree from Emory College where he was accepted into School of Medicine s Early Acceptance Program as a college sophomore. He graduated with his MD in 1989, and subsequently completed 8 additional years of training at Emory including a residency in internal medicine, chief resident year at Hospital, an NIH-supported research fellowship in molecular and vascular medicine, and a clinical fellowship in cardiovascular diseases. Dr. Sperling serves or has served as medical director for a number of unique programs at Emory including The HeartWise Risk Reduction Program, InterVent Atlanta, Staying Aloft, and has served as special consultant to The Centers for Disease Control. Treatment of Blood Cholesterol: New Approaches; New Agents Objective: Discuss the optimal lipid goals for all patients and appropriate treatment strategies. Narendra Singh, MD, FRCPC, FACC, FAHA Dr. Singh graduated in the top ten of his class from Dalhousie Medical School in Halifax Nova Scotia and went on to complete a residency and cardiology fellowship at the University of Toronto. He practiced for eight year in Toronto at Rouge Valley Health System, Centenary site. He has previously been director of Scarborough Cardiology Research, cofounder of the GTACC organization, and also past National Secretary of the Canadian Cardiovascular Society. He moved to Atlanta in 2002. He was a partner with Northside Cardiology PC and subsequently joined with Atlanta Heart Specialists, LLC, where he is Director of Clinical Research. He has been Clinical Assistant Professor at and now with Georgia Regents University. Dr. Singh is currently a councillor on the Georgia Chapter, American College of Cardiology board. Dr. Singh is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, American Heart Association and Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. Dr. Singh has been a site investigator in over 100 national and international trials. He actively designs and conducts independent research. He has published extensively on topics ranging from acute coronary syndromes, health outcomes, disparities in access to care and South Asian heart disease. Metabolic Syndrome and Diabetes Management in CAD Patients Objectives: Develop functional assessment skills and utilize screening tools and treatment options to appropriately manage CAD patients with metabolic syndrome and diabetes based on updated joint guidelines. Bryan Wells, MD Dr. Wells joined Emory s Division of Cardiology in 2012. He practices general cardiology and vascular medicine at Hospital Midtown. In addition, he spends time educating cardiology fellows, residents, and students from the medical and PA schools. Dr. Wells graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor s degree in chemical engineering from Auburn University. He attended medical school at the Medical College of Georgia. He completed a residency in internal medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he also served as a chief medical resident. While at UAB, he received the Argus Award for Best Medicine Resident and Best Medicine Attending. In addition, he received the William Koopman Award for outstanding research. After residency, Dr. Wells completed a general cardiology fellowship at Emory. Dr. Wells s clinical interests include general cardiology, vascular medicine, vascular ultrasound, echocardiography and nuclear cardiology. He has been active in the development of a vascular medicine service and vascular lab at Emory Midtown. Dr. Wells is a member of the American College of Cardiology, the Society for Vascular Medicine, and the American Society for Echocardiography. Stress Testing and Cardiac Imaging: When to Order/What to Order/How to Interpret Objectives: Review appropriate use criteria in regard to cardiovascular imaging services in an effort to improve management and outcomes of low, intermediate, and high risk patients.

Statement of Need: The practice of clinical cardiology is evolving rapidly. Managing the needs of the cardiovascular patient has become increasingly complex. Utilizing the guidelines for the management and treatment of the CV patient is prominent in maintaining the highest quality of patient care. Goal Statement: The overall goal of the activity is to improve patient care by increasing learner competence in the promotion of quality cardiovascular care, as well as improving performance in using appropriate guideline-based evidence in blood cholesterol treatment, ECG analysis, stress testing and cardiac imaging utilization, percutaneous coronary intervention, anti-coagulation therapy, mitral valve disease management, and diabetes and metabolic syndrome management in CAD patients. Educational Design: CCA members will participate in didactic lectures to enhance their scientific knowledge and assessment skills. Target Audience: The target audience for this course is Registered Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Physician Assistants and Pharmacists that are based in a hospital or private practice. It is for the beginner, intermediate or advanced individual. Accreditation & Designation: (Nurses) The American College of Cardiology Foundation (ACCF) is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center s Commission on Accreditation. The ACCF designates this educational activity for a maximum of 7.5 continuing education hours. Requirements for successful completion are attendance in a session in its entirety and completing the evaluation tool. While offering credits noted above, this program is not intended to provide extensive training or certification in the field.
