1 KIN 104 FITNESS AND WELLNESS ONLINE LECTURE Summer 2016 INSTRUCTOR: Dr. Carrie Edwards OFFICE HOURS: (PE Bldg., Office D): N/A (BEST Option) VOICE: Ext WEB: I. COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is designed to cover topics related to health and wellness including principles of fitness, nutrition, coronary heart disease, and stress management. Topics compliment the material being covered in the lab. (All lecture material, assignments, and communication will be delivered via the internet.) The lab portion of the class (taken on campus) is designed to fitness test students and assign an exercise program, and retest to note progress. YOU MUST BE SELF-MOTIVATED FOR SUCCESS IN THIS COURSE!!!! II. III. STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOME: a. Understand why all 5 components of fitness are important for health and quality of life. b. Understand the basic principle of overload and how to apply this principle when developing an exercise plan. c. Understand the basic principle of progression and how to apply this principle when developing an exercise plan. d. Demonstrate the ability to measure the 5 components of fitness. e. Demonstrate safe and effective ways of exercising. TEXT BOOK: Fit& Well: Core Concepts and Labs in Physical Fitness and Wellness, 11 ed. by Fahey, Insel, & Roth. ISBN: X/ DO NOT PURCHASE THE BRIEF OR ALTERNATE VERSION OF THE BOOK. If you do you will not have all the chapters we cover. Please purchase your textbook by Wednesday 5/27. Directly from the publisher (Hard Copy) Or (6-month Digital Copy)
2 d. Any other source but make sure you do not get the BRIEF or ALTERNATE version IV. COURSE MANAGEMENT (no access code required): This class will be managed through CANVAS, the NEW campus tool for online courses. You will take tests, quizzes, and participate in class discussions through CANVAS. You will also submit all other work and communicate with me through CANVAS. V. GRADING: Lecture counts for 50% of your course grade. Lab counts for the other 50% off your course grade. ALL ASSIGNMENTS ARE DUE BY 11:55 PM ON THE DUE DATE! a. Exams 150 pts Three multiple choice/true-false exams each containing 50 questions and worth 50 points. You will have 1 hour to complete each exam. Once you enter the exam your time begins and you will not be able to exit and re-enter. You may only open an exam once. When you are ready to take the exam make sure you are not interrupted. Unit #1 (Chapters 1, 2, 3, 11) Unit #2 (Chapters 6, 4, 8, 9) Unit #3 (Chapters 5, 10, 12, 15) b. Quizzes 50 pts 12 multiple choice quizzes each containing 10 questions and worth 5 points. Two quizzes will be dropped. (Either the 2 you don t complete or the 2 you score the lowest on). You will have 10 minutes to finish each quiz. Once you enter the quiz your time begins and you will not be able to exit and re-enter. You may only open a quiz once. c. Integrative Learning Assignment The Food Project Details will be provided and all work will be uploaded into CANVAS i. Social Media Research/Peer Perception Reflection 10 pts ii. Facts Research Paper 30 pts iii. Group Projects 30 pts VI. Fitness Paper 30 pts One written paper. Details are available on my webpage and will also be posted in CANVAS. Papers will be submitted via CANVAS VII. Extra Credit A maximum of 20 extra credit points may be earned. Choose from the following. (Hard copy proof must be submitted to my mailbox in the PE office by the extra credit deadline) a. 10 points have your cholesterol measured at the Student Health and Wellness Center or a doctor s office. Turn in the results to your instructor (lab results sheet); include your name and class ticket #.
3 b. 10 points - Participate in an organized charity walk/run/race. Event registration and proof of completion must be turned in to your instructor. Include your name and class ticket #. VIII. Participation Requirement All students must activity participate in lecture to remain enrolled. This means logging in to CANVAS at least once a week and completing one discussion board assignment per Unit (3 total). For discussion boards you are also required to post your response to the initial prompt (5-10 sentances) and also respond to at least two of your classmate s posting (3-5 sentances). You will be evaluated on the content of your discussion board posting. Please put thought into your postings. Plagiarism or any other form of academic dishonesty will result in no credit (0 points) on the assignment or examination without an opportunity for make-up. (Please refer to the current class schedule or General Catalog for Cerritos College Academic Honesty/Dishonesty Policy) IX. ACCESS TO THE INTERNET FROM CERRITOS: Students are given STUDENT IDs WHEN REGISTERING FOR CLASSES. This username allows you access to the campus network and the internet as a free service for enrolling at Cerritos College If you will be using computers at Cerritos College, go to the computer lab in the library building to activate your account. (accounts are deleted at the end of each semester). X. STUDENT/TEACHER INTERACTION: a. Online Lecture classes will not meet in a classroom. You are responsible for completing the assignments on time and are responsible for contacting me if you have questions, concerns, or problems. Follow the syllabus, check your regularly and login to CANVAS regularly (at least 2X per week) in order to stay up-todate with your assignments. b. You should use CANVAS for all class communication. But, if you need to me please use the following guidelines. c. When sending an to me, next to Subject type your name, the class you are in and the purpose of the message. Examples: John Smith, KIN 104 #24645 online, extra credit OR John Smith, KIN 104 #24645, problem. If you do not address your appropriately there may be a delay in response. XI. REMINDERS: a. Log onto CANVAS at least twice a week to check for announcements. b. Actually read the messages I send. They provide important information. c. Read the chapters in your textbook for each unit. d. Complete online discussions, quizzes and assessments by 11:55 pm on the due date.
4 e. To receive extra credit hard copy proof must be submitted to my mail box in the PE office by the extra credit deadline. Please ask the secretary to place items in my mailbox. f. Complete all orientation requirements before the deadline to avoid being dropped from the class. XII. CLASS SCHEDULE: ALL ASSIGNMENTS, QUIZZES, EXAMS, ETC. MUST BE SUBMITTED BY 11:55PM ON THE DUE DATE No assignments, quizzes, exams, etc. will be accepted late.
