6 Business Achievement Awards (BAAs) What are the Business Achievement Awards (BAAs)? The BAAs are an aggressive, self-directed, results-based, business and leadership program designed to complement academics while accelerating a student's leadership skills. The awards focus on the words surrounding the FBLA Crest: Service, Education and Progress. There is a heavy emphasis on education with integrated classroom projects. The BAAs are the easiest and most effective way of implementing FBLA into your classroom. Most FBLA members are already eligible for the Future level. The individual recognition is a four-tier program aligned with the FBLA-PBL Goals, National Business Education Association (NBEA) Standards and Career Clusters. Activities can be conducted all year long and count toward BAAs recognition. The program s annual deadline is March 1 for the first three levels and April 25 for the America level. Activities completed after that time count toward the next year s recognition. The BAAs have four distinct award levels Future, Business, Leader and America. How do my students receive recognition through the BAAs? Each level receives national and state recognition. In addition to a lapel pin from the National Office for each level of recognition, the State provides the following additional recognition. The Future Level award winners will receive a certificate from the State Office. Business Level award winners will receive a certificate, a ribbon at the State Leadership Conference (SLC) and their name in the SLC program. Leader Level award winners will receive a certificate, a ribbon at the SLC, their name in the SLC program and a plaque at the SLC (awarded on stage). America Level award winners will receive a certificate, a ribbon at the SLC, their name in the SLC program, a plaque at the SLC (awarded on stage) and recognition at the National Leadership Conference. Can a student complete more than one level in a school year? Yes. Students are encouraged to complete as many levels as they can. Any activities completed may be carried over to the next school year. How do students track their progress in the BAAs? Advisers enroll their students but then the student receives login information. From that point on, the student is responsible for tracking their progress. The adviser simply signs off on the progress once it is complete. Our chapter has been around a while but we re just starting BAAs this year. Do past activities count? Yes! Many of the activities in BAA are regular practices of chapters. Returning members from previous years who have completed those assignments or activities may count those activities if the adviser approves. Page 5

7 Business Achievement Awards (BAAs) Do you have to accomplish the levels in order? Yes. BAA Levels will only be awarded in their sequenced order but the activities that go with each level do not have to be completed in order. For example, attending a state event counts toward BAA at the leader level. If a member is working on their Future Level they can record that they attended the state event toward the achievement for the Leader Level but they will not be able to receive recognition until the Future and Business Levels are completed. How are advisers using BAAs in the classroom and to run FBLA? Advisers are using BAAs in a variety of ways to manage the chapter, engage students in relevant business leadership experiences and add to the richness of the classroom/fbla dynamics. Here are a few of the ways advisers are utilizing BAAs: All business educators go through each of their courses and take BAAs activities and include them in their lesson plans as projects, assignments or in-class activities. BAAs activities are planned by chapter officers to be completed during chapter meetings and other chapter activities. When chapters attend conferences, they meet with their members to see which activities have been completed during the conference and integrate this experience with the accomplishment they are making toward the BAA levels. When advisers have substitute teachers, the assignment for the day is for students to work on their BAA-related activities and projects. BAAs are being used as a pre-requisite for members to attend FBLA events, activities and special experiences. BAAs are being used as a requirement for any member that wants to become a chapter or state officer. Members who have achieved higher levels of the BAAs are mentoring new members on how to accomplish their BAAs. Chapter officers are regularly recognizing the achievement of members on BAAs from new members who have started the program to members who have achieved different levels to highlighting outstanding projects in newsletters, websites and through school/chapter recognition. Below are the activities for the Future level award - notice how many of these activities your students already do! Page 6

11 FBLA Arizona Affiliation Program Membership Options Within FBLA Arizona Once an FBLA chapter has been established and has completed the necessary steps to be in good standing, the decision on which membership route needs to be established. They are as follows: Program Affiliation: Under this option, a chapter chooses to affiliate the entire chapter and by so doing ensuring that all Business and/or Information Technology Education students are registered members of the FBLA. Within the program affiliation option, a chapter may choose to be affiliated at either the Basic or One Star level. The specific benefits for each level are outlined later in this document. Traditional Membership: A chapter may choose to only register some of its students (a minimum of 12 students must be signed up). In addition to the cost per student, there is a chapter registration fee that will be assessed. Please note that this option is the least preferred as it does not align with the philosophical ideals of FBLA being fully integrated within a Business and/or Information Technology Education program. What is the Program Affiliation Plan? The Program Affiliation Plan allows students who are enrolled in a Business and/or Information Technology Program to be eligible for the benefits and opportunities of FBLA as a part of the total program delivery. This plan also focuses on the development of essential employability, participative and attitude development skills as called for in the U.S. Department of Labor s Secretary s Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills (SCANS) Report. Under the Program Affiliation Plan, all students are FBLA members. All students in the local Business Education and/or Information Technology Programs are simply signed up using a scaled affiliation fee. How does the Program Affiliation Plan work? For a flat fee in a single Business Education and/or Information Technology program, join FBLA Arizona under an agreement and fee based on student enrollment from the previous year. Invoices will be ed to you from FBLA Arizona and all payments need to be mailed to the state office. Page 10

Create an animated video that highlights the normal frustrations of airport security, explains the benefits of TSA PreCheck, and motivates the audience to become known travelers who can use the TSA PreCheck program. Please take special note this is not just filming a video it is creating an animation-based overview of the differences between standard screening and TSA PreCheck. BUSINESS ETHICS Research an ethical topic dealing with global business and sweatshops and/or child labor. BUSINESS FINANCIAL PLAN You are planning to open a one-stop shop home improvement store where customers will be able to purchase a variety of items including kitchen cabinets, closets, outdoor decks, curio cases, lighting, surveillance cameras, furniture, home theater equipment, flooring, and other home enhancements. Competition includes hardware stores, furniture stores, entertainment and electronic stores, and interior design companies. Your niche is that everything available in these stores can be purchased in one location where customers can get bundle deals on multiple goods to save Page 23

25 money. You are planning to open your facility in a 25,000 square foot, standalone store and warehouse. You will need to purchase inventory for the store and stock the warehouse, as well as hire contractors, installers, and truck drivers to assist with the delivery and set up or building of purchases. BUSINESS PRESENTATION You have been asked to make a presentation to the local Chamber of Commerce on how they can protect themselves from Identity Theft. COMPUTER GAME & SIMULATION PROGRAMMING You are a computer virus tracker. You live inside a computer and travel the network looking for viruses and malware. When some are detected, you have to travel to the infection site and launch anti-virus software discs at the malware minions. Escalate the adventure from basic network bugs to a Web Bot boss. Take note in design to include computer networking structure and devices. DESKTOP PUBLISHING Some of your friends have started their own band and have asked you to be their marketing manager. You have been given the task to develop their promotional materials. You will need to design a poster that they will display in towns where they perform, a brochure they will send to different markets promoting the band, a business card, and quarter-page advertisement they will use for newspapers, magazines, and other areas. DESKTOP APPLICATION PROGRAMMING Furry Friends Animal Shelter has asked you to develop an animal records system. You will create an interface that allows supervisors and staff to enter information regarding each animal and then to print reports based on the information. The initial screen should ask for the following basic information: Case Number (unique identifier) If a case number is entered, the screen with all information about the animal should appear. If no case number is entered, then a new arrival button should be available. The following information should be available for entry for all new arrivals. Page 24

26 Animal Name Animal Type (only options should be Dog, Cat, or Other) Animal Age (numeric field only) Date of Birth (if known) Date of Arrival (by default, should be the current date) Micro-chipped (need a field for Yes/No) If yes, need to have field for chip number, owner, and date contacted. Relinquishing Party Cage Number (numeric field only) Upon arrival, all animals are placed in quarantine until all test results have returned. The report will show cage numbers for all animals in quarantine. The report should begin with the letter Q. After the initial screen information is entered, the screen should then advance to a special screen based on the animal type. Then the additional information should be able to be entered based on animal type. Dog General Information Fields Breed Options for this field should come from data from codes tables in a database or flat file. Weight (numeric field) Hair color Type of hair (long/short) Sex of Animal Male/Female (only options) Spayed/Neutered (field for Yes/No) If not, the procedure must be scheduled. 29 DIGITAL DESIGN AND PROMOTION You are on the staff of a large marketing firm in New York City and Miles Stanish has hired your firm. He is opening a bicycle store in New York and plans to name it Cycle Fitness. Your firm is to design a new logo for this new shop and as well as for future locations he plans to open. Miles plans to hold free seminars on bike safety, cycling for fitness, what to look for when buying a bicycle, choosing the right bike, choosing a bike for a child, and creating a cycle group that will be doing monthly cycle trips. Your firm must design the new logo, a grand opening postcard for mailing, a business card, a rack card that will sit on the counter in a holder indicating all the seminars offered, and a quarter-page advertisement, and a t-shirt. Information Opening Date is June 1 Address: 123 Avenue of the Americas, New York, NY 20013, phone Rack Card: Create at least five seminars and cost Components The logo will be full color and should be incorporated on all of the printed pieces. The grand opening postcard will be printed full color both sides with a mail panel. Size is 8.5 wide x 5.5 tall. The business cards will be full color, with bleeds, 1 side. Size is 2 wide x 3.5 tall vertical card. The rack card will be full color both sides. Size is 4 wide x 9 tall. One-quarter page (5.14 x 10.5 ) grayscale newspaper advertisement to appear in newspapers for grand opening. DIGITAL VIDEO PRODUCTION FBLA Create a FBLA membership video to recruit FBLA members in your school and to show at career fairs and the community. E-BUSINESS Set up a website for young artistic entrepreneur(s) to sell their art, pottery, jewelry, etc. You should include, but not limited to, pictures, bio of the entrepreneur(s), social media links, purchase and shipping information, and shopping cart. Information may be fictitious. Page 28

30 EMERGING BUSINESS ISSUES Consumer products sold by brand name companies have been facing increasing challenges throughout the recession as well as the increase in online shopping. Brand loyalty in three categories (food, beverage, and household goods) has decreased for three years (2013 American Pantry Study). The amount of consumers willing to purchase their traditional brands, regardless of whether the brand is on sale or not, has decreased from 33 percent in 2010 to 29 percent in One of the reasons this is occurring is competition from consumer products private label choices. The 2013 American Pantry Study found that 88 percent of consumers who have become purchasers of private label products will not return to their previous national brand purchases even once the economy has recovered. How will this trend positively affect the overall consumer products industry? How will this trend negatively affect the overall consumer products industry? MOBILE APPLICATION DEVELOPMENT Your school has asked you to write a mobile application announcing activities at your school including dates, times, and contact information. With this app include an events list that retrieves events starting at the current day and extending into the next few months. Include a banner image scroller to this application. PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT Green Teens--Produce a PSA that points out simple life changes teens can make that will impact our environment in a positive way. SOCIAL MEDIA CAMPAIGN Your adviser wants to increase FBLA membership by 10 percent over last year s number. As the Recruitment Committee Chair, your task is to develop a comprehensive communications plan. Due to your limited budget, a critical element of your plan will involve social media. Develop a social media marketing plan for your back-to-school recruitment event. Because students decide within the first two weeks of the school year which student organizations they will join, this event is a critical recruitment tool Page 29

31 and is highly visible to both your chapter members and the school community. You are competing against a number of diverse student organizations, so your campaign needs to have a strong call-to-action. You will use at least three social media platforms (e.g., Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram, Tumblr, etc.) and utilize a creative mix of video, photos, and text to promote the unique benefits of FBLA to your target audience. You will incorporate a mix of owned, earned and paid media (note: if social advertisements are part of your marketing strategy, it is not necessary to set them to be live ). All information used may represent your local chapter or be based solely off of a fictitious student organization. WEBSITE DESIGN Develop a website for Cycle Fitness, a new company opening up in New York City. The shop s address is nd Street, New York, NY The store will be selling a variety of bicycles including road bikes, mountain bikes, cyclocross bikes, folding bikes, electric-assist bikes, women s bikes, children bikes, etc. The owner also plans to have seminars on bike safety, cycling for fitness, choosing the right bike, etc. as well as have monthly cycle trips in and out of the city. Highlight the different types of bicycles, seminars, and trips. Include a Q&A section and contact section. Page 30
