1 Arizona Healthcare News Articles, Interviews and Statistics for the Healthcare Executive At Arizona Hospitals, Size Matters Large Hospitals Report Profits While Small Hospitals Struggle By David Peel Publisher and Editor Arizona Healthcare News Arizona hospitals report a wealth of data each year to the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS). They are required to report financial, utilization and staffing information using a form called the Uniform Accounting Report (UAR). Some hospitals have years that end in December while others end in March, June or September so UAR period end dates can vary. UAR information is made available to the public in spreadsheets available for download on the ADHS web site at We thought it would be interesting to download the most recent UAR spreadsheet to evaluate the financial health, an income statement perspective, of the Arizona hospital industry. At the same time, we wanted to be sure the UAR information was accurate so we went through the extra step of confirming the data with hospital Chief Financial Officers (CFOs) and the people they designate to report to ADHS. The Arizona Hospital Financial Results report on pages three through six of this article was prepared using information these UAR reports. Big Equals Profits The Arizona Hospital Financial Results report is sorted largest hospital, in terms of, Support, to smallest hospital., Support is operating revenues net of contractual adjustments. There are four pages to the report with twenty-seven hospitals on pages three, four, and five and eighteen hospitals on page six. Only one of the largest twentyseven hospitals, Carondelet St. Joseph's Hospital in Tucson, lost money and almost half of the $12.7 million loss came non-operating sources in the Income and column. Of the next twenty-seven hospitals on page Economies of scale favor larger organizations in almost every industry. However, the percentage of small Arizona hospitals that re- -1- four, seven lost money (26%), six hospitals lost money on page five (22%) and nine hospitals lost money on page six (50%). Comments CFOs When we asked hospital CFOs to confirm the UAR figures, we also asked them to comment on their hospital's performance. Brian Hoefle, CFO of Yavapai Regional Medical Center, said, With flat volumes and payments Medicare and AHCCCS basically frozen, Yavapai Regional Medical Center is putting even greater emphasis on managing expenses. Karen A. Francis, CFO of Casa Grande Regional Medical Center, told us, "FY2009 was our most challenging year financially following two previous years of losses. We made substantial improvements in FY2009 to essentially break even operations compared to the prior two years. We continued to experience substantial improvement in both our volumes and net income operations throughout FY 2010." Concluding Comments
