Willis is twenty-three years old and a junior transfer at Chapman University. Her major is Broadcast Journalism with a minor in Women s Studies. She comes from a diverse family; her mother being Vietnamese and her father being African-American. She has a younger sister who is a freshman at UC Irvine. Willis knew of her passion for journalism when she first began to enjoy writing short stories and poems. When she also found her love for talking and meeting new people, she knew that a major in broadcast journalism would be the best career choice. Willis brings a lot of promise and creativity with her experience in writing for the Fullerton College magazine as well as writing news stories and editing packages for Chapman News. Her knowledge in writing, camera work, and editing will bring new aspects to our media resources. With her bubbly and outgoing personality, she is sure to bring a whole new spark to the West Orange County Chamber of Commerce. Chairman s Message Virginia Vaughn STAKEHOLDER PERKS As you know the West Orange County Regional Chamber of Commerce is venturing to publicize more of its Stakeholders. In that effort we are looking to highlight one Stakeholder every week with our new Center Stage profile. However, we need your help! We have some incredible businesses and people doing miraculous things in Orange County. What we want to do is share your story with as many people as we can! Center Stage articles are written by Alex Miranda. If you would like to share your story or have any interest in publicizing your business through the Chamber contact Alex Miranda at media@wocrcoc.org PAST CENTER STAGE RECIPIENTS Javier Solis Holiday Inn Buena Park Katie Wanamaker M&D Properties Inc., The Source at Beach Kevin Wynne Knott s Berry Farm CAMP ACCOUNTING LEE & PERRIN REAL ESTATE GIVING CHILDREN HOPE E2G2 RED LION HOTELS GRECO DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT, INC. 3 Page 3 Legislative Affairs Message Ho-El Park, INTERNATIONAL TRADE AND CYBERSPACE SECURITY Doing business has become quite globalized thanks to the internet and its associated technologies. Our businesses are exposed to a larger audience and consumers. While small businesses encompass much of our members in our locale, they are certainly not restricted by the boundaries of our three cities. California is continually pushing towards the globalization of doing business. One of our cities, Buena Park, plans to send delegates to South Korea on April 22, 2014 to form a sister city relationship. These recent efforts by California are steps to attract new businesses and jobs through globalization and to provide cyber security in this global era. 1. Governor Brown has established the California International Trade and Investment Advisor Council in an effort to grow international business opportunities for California companies. The Council, headed by Eleni Kounalakis (former U.S. Ambassador to Hungary), will advise the Governor on strategies to expand international trade and investment for California businesses. California s economy significantly benefits from international trade and investment. In 2013, it registered a record number of exports with businesses exporting more than $168 billion in goods. Foreign companies employ 590,100 CA workers and foreign investment is responsible for 4.9 % of state s total private industry employment. 2. SB 928 Mexico Trade Office. State Senators Correa and Huff have proposed this bill to form a public-private partnership with Mexico businesses by establishing and operating an international trade office in Mexico. This will help our businesses grow by allowing us to easily connect with Mexico s businesses. More jobs will be created, as Mexico will also reciprocate in investing and opening up businesses in California. 3. Guide for Small Businesses to Protect Against Cyber Attacks, Data Breaches. Benefits of doing business internationally (or even locally) are not without risks, especially when it comes to data security. We all know or heard about the data security breach against Target stores during the Holidays, costing the company millions of dollars in losses. This is just one out of many incidents where business data securities have been compromised. As hackers are hard to track down and prosecute, the business community themselves should take active steps to mitigate any potential cyber-attacks. Accordingly, in February 2014, CA Attorney General Kamala Harris has released a guide entitled How California Business Can Protect Against and Respond to Malware, Data Breaches, and Other Cyber incidents. I urge all of our members to take a moment to go through this informative guide to prevent any data security breaches in our businesses. The guide can be found at oag.ca.gov/cybersecurity. Ambassador Committee Message Alan Dolch, Chairman PROVIDING STAKEHOLDER WITH TOOLS FOR SUCCESS Member Relations Welcome to April. The end of the first quarter and the beginning of a new one, the end of winter and the start of spring -- spring is ripe with new beginnings and fresh starts. Meeting new businesses, enrolling new members and resurrecting old contacts your Chamber Ambassadors are actively partaking in the community. Let us know how we can get you to join the Ambassador team and meet everyone within West Orange County that we represent. Our latest success is anchored with the use of Meetup.com, thanks to Ambassador s Katie and April. Meetup.com is a site that garners groups to help support local restaurants. We will have meet up s at member restaurants that will be open to everyone. The Chamber will soon take full advantage of these gatherings. Meetup.com is easy to use and free to join. It is just one more opportunity to tell everyone about your business and to find providers that you may need but best of all you will want to do business with. The Internet is fantastic but truth be told so is interpersonal communication. Become the kind of stakeholder that people want to refer and do business with- get involved. It s fun too. We hope to see you there.
