THE DENVER LUNCHEON As one of the state s largest annual gatherings focusing on women and girls (over 1,900 attendees), The Women s Foundation s Annual Luncheon carries a long-standing tradition of hosting well-known keynote speakers who bring a message of empowerment, collaboration and inspiration to support the organization s mission: To build resources and lead change so every woman and girl in Colorado achieves her full potential. The 2015 Denver Luncheon is scheduled for Wednesday, October 14, 2015, and is The Women s Foundation of Colorado s largest fundraising event. The Annual Denver Luncheon features a compelling speaker (in the past included America Ferrera, Shiza Shahid, Geena Davis and Martina Navratilova), remarks given by Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper and past GLC participants, and local entertainment. Join The Women s Foundation of Colorado at our 2015 Annual Denver Luncheon The Women s Foundation of Colorado s Annual Denver Luncheon brings together diverse sectors and communities who support women and girls on their paths to economic self-sufficiency. Keynote Speaker Soledad O Brien, award-winning journalist, documentarian and originator of CNN s Black in America and Latino in America She has been a tireless advocate of creating opportunities for Americans of all backgrounds, especially girls. This has infused her work as a multiple Emmy and Peabody award-winning broadcast journalist, as an executive producer, and as CEO of Starfish Foundation where she works to help disadvantaged young women have access to educational opportunities. 3 THE NEED We believe that change is necessary, change is possible, change is you and change is us. With your continued support, The Women s Foundation of Colorado creates meaningful change for women and girls across the state. Your support will help continue to knock down barriers, such as a lack of affordable child care, that keep more than 500,000 women at or near the poverty level in Colorado. Your support will help implement programs that are proven to keep girls on track to graduate from high school, lowering Colorado s current dropout rate of nearly 4,600 girls a year. Your support will help ensure that women and girls have access to the education and training that opens doors to STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) careers, providing higher lifetime earnings and more entrepreneurial opportunities. Your support will help provide transformational leadership and personal growth opportunities to outstanding high school juniors through our Girls Leadership Council. OUR THREE KEY FOCUS AREAS: Reducing Girls High School Dropout Rate: Nearly 4,600 girls drop out of Colorado schools each year, resulting in a lifetime of challenges that are difficult, if not impossible, to overcome. One in four high school dropouts lives in poverty. Our Girls Graduate Initiative is based on extensive research and experience collaborating with organizations to keep girls at risk of dropping out on the path to high school graduation. By partnering with organizations that work closely with schools to offer evidence-based school engagement interventions, academic support, and family engagement resources, we help girls overcome obstacles and stay on track, especially in the critical transition from middle school to high school. These investments improve girls futures and strengthen Colorado communities. Helping Low-Income Single Mothers On The Path To Economic Self-Sufficiency: In Colorado, more than half a million women are living at or near poverty. Colorado families headed by single mothers have the lowest median annual income of all family types at only $26,705, and the cost of child care can be nearly half their annual income. The Women s Foundation of Colorado works to ensure working women receive the necessary support on their path to achieving their full potential. WFCO partners with organizations that provide direct service programs including job training or education, career counseling/planning and child care. Enhancing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Career Opportunities For Girls: Women working in STEM fields earn 33% more than in other fields and Colorado has the highest number per capita of entry-level STEM jobs, yet women represent only 24% of the STEM workforce. Too many women are discouraged at a young age from pursuing their scientific interests and lack female role models and mentors who could help them achieve success in STEM careers.
