1 ACN e newsletter Association of California Neurologists December 26, 2009 A PERSONAL APPEAL If you are a member of the ACN, thank you for supporting your organization. You are undoubtedly aware of its mission and the efforts it undertakes on behalf of your practice and the patients you serve. The dues are modest and a small price to pay in order to have your peers doing the volunteer work of interacting with many organizations and the state legislature. The ACN office is very small and is run by our very able executive secretary Peggy Pearce and the members of the Board of Directors, who all volunteer their time. Our budget therefore is not very large but has been impacted significantly because of the new regulations with regards to corporate sponsorship. This has necessitated us to establish a nonprofit foundation, the Association of California Neurologists Foundation (ACNF) in order to allow us to compete for grants. This is not an easy task because of enormous competition. We therefore must rely primarily on your continued membership. As secretary-treasurer of the ACN, I have the duty to watch over the financial viability of the organization and to do so; we must increase participation by California neurologists. I realize that you are not the person I need to convince, but I am soliciting your help in approaching your colleagues to join the ACN. I remember the time when there was no ACN and legislators looked toward podiatrists and chiropractors for advice whenever a bill appeared affecting neurological care. The existence of ACN was a welcome change but it requires a lot of hard work by the volunteer Board of directors, at considerable expense in time and financial cost. When away from the office to take care of ACN's business they personally carry this expense which is far greater than the annual dues of $95. There are currently about 1500 neurologists in the State of California of which 500 belong to ACN. Although we are the largest state society of the American Academy of Neurology, we are a large state with lots of activity affecting our profession. Could you please do yourself a favor and keep the ACN viable by soliciting your fellow neurologists to join? (see attached registration form) It is as easy as forwarding this Newsletter and adding a personal word of encouragement. We all appreciate your support. Eric H. 2 HEADACHE COOPERATIVE OF THE PACIFIC 3 RD ANNUAL MTG. JANUARY 30-31, 2010 OJAI, CALIFORNIA We invite you to attend the Third Annual meeting of the Headache Cooperative of the Pacific, to be held in Ojai California on January We are a young organization, formed in the summer of 2007, modeled after the very successful Headache Cooperative of New England (HCNE). Please join us at the Ojai Valley Inn for the 3rd Annual meeting of Headache Cooperative of the Pacific. Our goals are: * To advance the science of headache through education and coordinated research * To provide a forum to link providers of headache care throughout the western states. * To support access to appropriate care for our patients. * To increase awareness about national and international organizations and journals devoted to headache research and patient care. Prior meetings have been exciting venues for professional education regarding multiple facets of basic neuroscience as well as very clinical issues, with a strong "bench to bedside" approach. Our upcoming meeting promises to deliver a similar excellent professional educational experience, in a beautiful setting, and with a group size that encourages one on one interaction. Dr. Calanchini practiced at the California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco from 1964 until is retirement in During his retirement he continued teaching neurology and working at the California Pacific Medical Center Memory Clinic. Dr. Calanchini was a mentor to many and will be missed by his colleagues. Stanley van den Noort, MD, UC Irvine neurologist passed away September 20, Dr. van den Noort will be remembered for his life time efforts involving the early treatment of multiple sclerosis. Dr. van den Noort was the first chief medical officer of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. He will be remembered for his dream to establish a major research and treatment center on the UC campus. Dr. van den Noort will be missed by his fellow neurologists.
