Volume 24 Issue 3 March, 2011 FAA Safety Seminar Chapter 277 s February Membership Meeting on Monday the 14th was held in conjunction with an FAA Safety Seminar at the southern Illinois Airport Terminal. It was well attended by our members and the local aviation community. The topics presented were Re-registration of Aircraft, Flying with Inoperative Equipment, How to Pass the FAA Physical medical requirements and referred to helpful non-government web site called (Very good). George Ballard and Lew Owens were the speakers. Refreshments and door prizes rounded out the evening. SIUC 2010 Air Race Classic Participants Bob Amunrud,

2 VOLUME 24, ISSUE 3 PRESIDENT S COLUMN Last month we had a very informative meeting courtesy of George Ballard and Lew Owens from the Indianapolis FSDO Office. In particular, Lew provided useful information on how to pass the FAA physical and what to do when you have problems with the FAA medical. The meeting was well-attended with a mixture of EAAers and SIU students and staff members. The following morning, the George and Lew provided information to around 100 Aviation Technology students. We applaud their efforts to assist and educate the aviation community. The arrival of baseball season brings with it better flying weather. Of course there are exceptions as with the first weekend in March. My plan to fly with Don Bartlett to Mt. Vernon for some hundred-dollar pancakes (the breakfast version of the hundred-dollar hamburger) was dashed by very poor weather conditions. Between poor visibility, rain, and low ceilings, the decision to stay on the ground was easy to make. Hopefully the weather will behave itself next month. On March 3 rd and 4 th, there was a seminar for maintenance personnel in Springfield. The seminar was attended by IAs and other maintenance technicians. IAs were able to use their attendance to fulfill the requirement for IA renewal. Having attended similar seminars in the past, I am able to compare participation with that of previous events. Where Thursday had a fair number of participants, Friday was sparsely attended when compared to previous years. In particular, there were far fewer vendors than in years past. Like so many other events occurring in aviation, there seem to be fewer and fewer aviators taking part. The Chapter must do all it can to promote aviation activities and reverse the declining trend. Saturday March 19 th has two events on the schedule. In the morning we ll have our monthly breakfast at the Golden Corral, beginning at 8:30. Later in the day members are encouraged to participate in the chili cook off (Hangar Hangout) hosted by Chapter 750 at MWA. The event will be in full swing by noon in the Midwest Aviation hangar. Please bring something yummy to share with other EAA members. The 2011 monthly breakfast hosted by the Chapter is slated to begin April 16 th. Plans are being made to donate proceeds from this breakfast to sponsor the SIU teams participating in the 2011 Air Classic Race. The students will likely hold a plane wash that day. Tentative plans are in the works to have a Bombing for Bucks contest in conjunction with the May 21 st Chapter breakfast. The contest was proven last year to be a challenging and entertaining event. It should grow in popularity throughout the year. The number of entrees for the June 4 th race continues to grow. Sam Hoskins is doing a fabulous job promoting the race. It will prove to be an exciting event. I recently made contact with Scott Marquardt from the Sparta Airport. We are tentatively planning a Chapter fly-out to Sparta sometime during May or June. We ll fire up their grill and have a Hangar Hangout during our visit. This month our presenter will be Molly M c Namara-Dean from Superflite. She will provide information on fabric covering. She is a true expert in this line of work and should provide valuable tips to help those involved in fabric covering work. If you have questions concerning fabric, she will likely have an answer.
