3 SPEAKERS Ken Baird, is the Vice President of Systems Engineering for Leber/ Rubes Inc. where for the past 22 years he has been a fire protection consultant.with more than 40 years of experience in the fire protection industry, his understanding of fire protection technology has created very progressive and highly reliable fire detection designs to address the needs of our buildings and their occupants. He has participated in the development of the Codes and Standards which affect life safety is currently a member of the CFAA executive, chairman of the ULC subcommittee for fire alarm control panels and a participant in a number of working groups. Ann Marie Barry, is Assistant General Counsel for SimplexGrinnell, a leading provider of fire protection equipment and services in North America, and for the division s business and professional licensing. Ms. Barry previously served as Corporate Counsel for ADT Security Services, Inc. and as Assistant General Counsel for SecurityLink, Inc. where she was responsible for managing the company s legal and licensing matters. She has also served as Counsel for Ameritech Corporation supporting its alarm subsidiary operations. Alan Cavers, is the Area Manager for the Fire & Security Systems Group of Underwriters Laboratories of Canada (ULC). He has been with ULC for 28 years in various capacities with the past 20 years in the fire alarm and burglary protection area. The Fire and Security Systems Group are the main resource for AHJ, Police Dept., Fire Dept., and Insurance Companies to source out and provide interpretations for field problems.alan is an active member of the Standing Committee on Use and Egress for the NBCC & NFCC for the next release of the NBC & NFC for He is a CFAA Registered Technician and a CFAA Director.
4 SPEAKERS Dave Goodyear, is president of D. Goodyear Fire Consulting, which offers fire investigation and fire safety consulting services. He has over 30 years experience in fire protection engineering, including 20 years with the Office of the Ontario Fire Marshal. He has specialized knowledge in post fire evaluation and an extensive background in fire alarm systems. Dave is on many fire alarm related ULC standards writing committees and is a member of the ULC/ULI Harmonization Co-ordinating Conference and Technical Committee. He is a member of the NFPA technical committee on Fire Alarm Fundamentals (NFPA 72) and the Canadian Advisory Council to ISO/TC21/SC3. Steve Maudsley has been in the fire alarm business in the Calgary market place for 30 years, employed by Edwards/GE Security. He has vast experience in design, installation and verification of fire alarm systems. His passion is to strengthen the fire alarm industry in Alberta through training and a dynamic Canadian Fire Alarm Association Alberta Chapter. Ken Prusky, is the Fire Marshal for the City of Calgary Fire Department. Ken has been with the Calgary Fire Department for 21 years working in the response/operations division for 10 years then moved into the Fire Prevention Bureau (FPB) for the last 11 years. Ken worked as a fire inspector and then moved into the role of Technical Services Officer reviewing all permit applications from initial Land Use through to final building permit. He also worked with Calgary Emergency Management during the G8 Summit. Ken has co-authored the Calgary Fire Department Emergency Response Standard, currently being implemented as part of the City of Calgary Streets and Roads Standard. Ken is currently the secretary for the Alberta Building Officials Association (ABOA); Vice President of the Alberta Fire Safety Officials Association (AFSOA).
5 SPEAKERS David Sylvester, is a Senior Life Safety Systems Specialist at Morrison Hershfield Limited in Toronto. David has over 20 years of engineering experience within fire protection and life safety systems and with related services, as a designer, building systems manager and consultant. He is an accredited Master Electrician/Electronic Technician with experience in electrical/fire alarm instruction/training. He also provides instruction on the Canadian Electrical Code at George Brown College and Fire Protection Engineering at Seneca College. David is 1st Vice President and Chair of the Education Committee for the CFAA. Kirk Thordobson, is a Fire Alarm Specialist at Stebnicki + Partners Consulting Electrical Engineers in Calgary. His role includes fire alarm design, technical resource, Codes and Standards interpretations and verifications. He has over 20 years experience as an electrical/ electronic technician. He moved to Canada twelve years ago after spending nine years with the Corps of Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) of the British Army. Kirk soon got involved in the Fire Safety industry and in 1998 volunteered as a Firefighter with the City of Airdrie for five years. His technical background and passion for fire safety led him to employment with G.E.Security as a fire alarm technician and the Calgary Health Region at the New Alberta Children s Hospital. He is a working group member of the new CAN/ ULC-S575 - Commissioning of Life Safety & Fire Protection Systems Standard currently under development. Kirk is a Registered Technician with the CFAA and Vice-President of the newly established Alberta Chapter of the CFAA. Tom VanKosh, is a fire alarm design and sales professional with over 16 years of progressive experience. Tom has played key roles in the design and implementation of large fire alarm system throughout Western Canada. Currently Tom is the Electronic Systems Sales Representative at SimplexGrinnell for the Southern Alberta region and is the Key Account representative for the Calgary Airport Authority and the University of Calgary.
