A new St. Brigid s Cross, made of rushes, is made every February in many Irish homes, and is mounted on a wall in the belief that one s home will be protected from fire. For St. Brigid s Day-February 1 we present here a short incantation or prayer which calls for the intercession of St. Brigid for protection. This prayer is ancient and translated from the Gaelic. ( Dart of fay could be a light spear thrown by an elf). Here are the last two verses: Every day and every night That I sing the genealogy of Bride Shall I not be killed, nor harried, Nor shall I be put in cell, nor wounded, Neither shall Christ leave me in forgetfulness. No fire, no sun, no moon shall burn me, No lake, no water, no sea shall drown me, No arrow of fairy nor dart of fay shall wound me, And I shall be under the protection of Holy Mary. And my gentle foster-mother my beloved Bride Louise Owens R.I.P. 5 To all Emeralds: One of the major events for St. Patrick s Day Committee, Inc. is the sponsoring and delivering of the Annual St. Patrick s Festival in Coral Gables. This undertaking has a $30,000 budget and requires many dedicated individuals to perform a series of tasks from seeking County and City grants, selling Festival Book Ads, and coordinating with various Coral Gables Departments in order to obtain approval to produce the Festival, In addition, others seek to find and hire the Entertainment, sign up the Vendors to sell goods, and to provide the tents and chairs on the premises. Come and volunteer for a Committee task. The 2nd Annual Irish Stew Cook-Off On January 23, over 50 Emeralds, spouses, children and guests chose to enjoy the ambiance of a Saturday afternoon at the Miami Yacht Club as they judged the 15 sample stews prepared by the chefs. Conor Hayes repeated his feat of a year ago and garnered 1st Place. Thanks to all the chefs, to Mark Donnelly and his committee, and to the Miami Yacht Club.
