2 Prgram Gals The Multimedia and Web Design prgram will prepare students with the necessary skills t develp and create multimedia prjects and web pages using a variety f resurces, hardware and applicatin prgrams. Integratin f cncepts, prgram applicatins, prgramming skills, hardware cmpnents, research tls and design will be fcused creating real-life prjects. The student will: create multimedia presentatins and web pages using a variety f prgram applicatins implementing the cncepts f web develpment including gals, flwcharts, mckups, scripting and design techniques define terms, identify file types, dwnlad files, use hardware and cmpressin techniques used in multimedia identify cncepts and patent laws related t cpyrighted materials used in multimedia create, edit, capture and imprt graphics, vide, sund, and animatins bth fr multimedia presentatins and the web integrate a variety f scripting languages t enhance interactivity within multimedia and web design prjects implement CSS, database integratin, web page usability rules, Search Engine Optimizatin (SEO), cntent management and scial marketing techniques within their web prjects identify cncepts n Sectin 508 f the American Disabilities Act and incrprate methds f accessibility within their prjects Prgram Objectives The student will: Create an interactive, nn-linear web site t serve as their prtfli f prjects they have cmpleted in the Multimedia and Web Design prgram during their academic pursuits at SCC Have a set preparatin f gals, bjectives, stated target audience and style prir t wrking n prjects. 3 Skills Assessment Students in the Multimedia and Web Design prgram were assessed in the capstne class CPM 230 E-Learning Develpment. This curse is designed fr bth students cmpleting the AAS degree and the certificates. They designed a web page prtfli that implemented the theries and applicatins learned nt nly in this curse but ther curses within the prgram. It serves t display their wrk prduced as a student at SCC. The final prject was graded fr the skills assessment. The prject was t design and create an interactive, web prtfli including all prjects prduced as a student at SCC, cntact infrmatin, scial media cmpnents, and their resume. The students were required t use cncepts taught within the curse and integrate a variety f sftware applicatins/scripting learned during their cursewrk within the Multimedia/Web Design prgram. Als required was mckup prductin alng with stated gals, bjectives and target audience; bservance f cpyright and Sectin 508 accessibility laws; design thery; debugging and beta-testing; incrprating Search Engine Optimizatin Techniques (SEO); use f Cascading Style Sheets (CSS); usability guidelines, uplading t a server; and saving as a validated HTML dcument. The curse is nly ffered in the spring semester intended t be ne f the final classes the student takes prir t graduatin. 4 Academic Assessment Plan At the beginning f Fall 2000 Semester, all vcatinal prgrams were ntified f the requirement f sme type f academic assessment perfrmance wuld be reprted yearly in rder t remain eligible fr special funding by federal and state agencies thrugh the State Plan frm DESE and CBHE bdies f Missuri. ACT WrkKeys was chsen t evaluate the students skills in areas such as reading, writing, analysis/critical thinking, and decisin-making. Cmputer Science chse the fllwing WrkKeys tests: Reading fr Infrmatin This cmputerized multiple chice test cntains 33 prblems t be cmpleted in 55 minutes. Students can scre between levels three thrugh seven, with seven being the highest. Students are reading passages frm actual wrkplace business dcuments and are expected t respnd t questins abut the cntent f these dcuments. Reading skills and analysis/decisin-making skills are measured by their answers Lcating Infrmatin This cmputerized multiple chice test cntains 38 prblems t be cmpleted in 55 minutes. Students can scre between levels three thrugh six, with six being the highest. Students are bserving wrkplace dcuments cntaining graphics, frms, charts, tables, etc., and are expected t glean infrmatin frm these dcuments t answer the questins accurately and in a timely manner. These skills are needed by SCC graduates every day in the wrkplace. Three (3) is the minimum expected scre fr Cmputer Science students t achieve n each WrkKeys test. The students take these tests in the Assessment Center in the Student Center, Rm 133 thrughut the semester that the student is enrlled in the capstne curse fr each degree. 6 III. Data analysis and interpretatin Over the past tw years, all students have scred at r abve the minimum (3) n the WrkKeys tests. We are still cnfident that the WrkKeys tests chsen are the crrect nes fr this measurement since it is imperative fr the students t read technical data and lcate the crrect infrmatin abut web develpment and multimedia in this ever-changing field. The web-based prtfli skills assessment reflects the skill sets ptential emplyers are seeking frm ur graduates as recmmended by ur advisry cmmittee. Multimedia students use f quality sftware and scripting skills in their capstne curse persists. The develpment f capstne prject prtflis are based n cntent needs t be within the students prtfli t seek ptential emplyment The students are using updated technlgies, sftware and new skill sets t create prjects Students are displaying mre energy and interest in teamwrk prjects. Time management skills have imprved in all degree prgrams. The students are able t integrate a variety f sftware, scripts and technlgy t create prjects IV. Lking at all the curse fferings within the prgram, pssibly ver-saturating the number f curses that may result in lw enrllments within sme classes. Keep develping web pages fr nn-prfits in CPM 240 as a team prject. Serves as a cmmunity service and gives students experience wrking with a client and creating a real-life prject Made changes t the AAS degrees and certificates t reflect changes within the prgram Marketing the prgram t increase enrllments t imprve assessment and student learning especially twards the AAS degrees Pssibly make CPM 260 are required curse fr the AAS degree since many emplyers are seeking this skill All fulltime and adjunct faculty shuld be utilizing Mdle in their curses V. Implicatins fr imprvement r changes Currently many f the Multimedia/Web Design students are pting fr certificates versus an AAS degree. Mre than half r ur students are returning learners. Many f ur students already have a Bachelr s degree and are updating their skills. Other students are unemplyed and are lking fr the quickest way t gain a new set f skills twards emplyment. The students wh are receiving an AAS degree tend t be a traditinal student althugh we are seeing an increase in nn-traditinal students btaining the AAS degree. There is a need t encurage students t see the value f an AAS degree (fr thse wh dn t currently have a degree) versus a certificate. This will help enable them t pursue a 4 year degree later. By changing the math requirement t MAT 105 it has made it easier fr many f ur students t pursue the AAS degree versus pting fr a certificate. In the past this was a radblck fr sme f ur students wh culd nt pass the math requirement. Adding the new curses CPT 160 Mbile Applicatins and CPM 260 Cntent Management Systems reflects the changing market within this field as recmmended by ur advisry bard. These are tw ht areas that many emplyers are seeking. Changing CPM 230 JavaScript back t an in-class curse frm an n-line was the result f student cmplaints that curse wrk was t difficult fr many f the students and had a high drp rate. The full-time faculty decided it wuld be in the best interests f CPM Assessment f Learning Reprt Page 8 Fall 2010-Spring 2012

9 ur students t have this curse back in the classrm with immediate access t an instructr. CPM 200 XML was drpped frm the prgram as recmmended by ur advisry cmmittee. PHP/MySQL is the recmmended surce fr database web applicatins since in is pen surce and heavily used in the field. Students cntinue t see the value f creating detailed mckups, prject develpment and strybards; with wrking in a team envirnment in creating prfessinal prjects t be added t their prtflis. Mre real-life business applicatins need t be added (via nn-prfit rganizatins, fr example) fr students t get practical experience develping web sites and wrking with a client in a team envirnment. A Mdle wrkshp fr ur adjuncts was held summer All faculty in the CPM prgram nw uses Mdle within their respective classes. The web is rapidly becming an integral part f business. Implementing Search Engine Optimizatin, scial media, analytics and accessibility techniques will imprve the prgram t stay abreast with current trends and technlgies. By adding mre curses t ur Multimedia and Web Design prgram, the prgram ptins fr classes are increasing fr the students and may result in lw enrllments within sme classes. VI.
