1 E-business Technlgy and Management Curse Descriptin The Internet, and assciated technlgies, are nw an established element f the IT prtfli f rganizatins in bth the public and private sectrs. Experiments in e-business and e-gvernment ver the past 6 years are nw cntributing t ur understanding f the critical issues invlved in leveraging the ptential f these technlgies. In respnse, this has led t digital transfrmatin initiatives within firms. Digital transfrmatin is abut digitizing business prcesses -- bth inter-rganizatin and intra-rganizatinal -- and requires an understanding f the technlgical, ecnmic, and institutinal drivers that gvern interactins within the firm as well as with custmers and trading partners. Using digital transfrmatin, which is the next step in the evlutin f e-cmmerce, as a guiding framewrk, this curse will prvide students with an verview f the fllwing critical technlgy, management, and plicy tpics. Technlgy infrastructure: A critical element f digital transfrmatin are technlgies that enable integratin, ptimizatin, cnnectin and cllabratin. Building n a basic understanding f internet and infrmatin technlgies, I will prvide an verview f technlgies and technlgy trends. The bjective is t equip yu with the very latest thinking and prvide yu the required principles t frmulate technlgy strategies in supprt f digital transfrmatin. Organizatinal applicatins: Overview f e-business and e-gvernment applicatins in a variety f sectrs with an emphasis n issues perrtaining t digital transfrmatin. These applicatins will illustrate cnsumer-business, business-business and intra-rganizatinal transactins invlving physical as well as digital prducts. The different business mdels underlying these applicatins will be highlighted and discussed frm bth an peratinal and strategic perspective. Plicy Issues: Overview f the key legal and plicy issues underlying electrnic cmmerce. Issues such as privacy, cntent selectin and rating, intellectual prperty rights, and tax implicatins will be selectively discussed. The curse has the fllwing learning bjectives: understand the interplay between technlgy, managerial, and plicy issues and hw these factrs will impact the evlutin f digital transfrmatin initiatives; recgnize and understand ways f using digital technlgies t imprve intra and inter-rganizatinal prcesses; analyze the impact that electrnic cmmerce is having and will likely have n key sectrs f the ecnmy and assess the strategic implicatins this analysis hlds fr an rganizatin; evaluate plicy issues related t privacy, cntent selectin, intellectual prperty rights, and establishing identity that are germane t electrnic cmmerce. T achieve these bjectives we will use a cmbinatin f lectures, cases, class discussin, and exercises. Assignments will be in the frm f readings, exercises, case preparatin, and a final grup prject. Student Expectatins A high level f individual student mtivatin and initiative is expected. Students are expected t use extensive nline resurces (see textbk/reading sectin belw) n electrnic cmmerce and be well prepared t discuss issues in class. Individual and grup learning prjects which require self-guided research, experimentatin, and an entrepreneurial attitude are an imprtant cmpnent f the curse. Students at Carnegie Melln are engaged in preparatin fr prfessinal activity f the highest standards. Each prfessin cnstrains its members with bth ethical respnsibilities and disciplinary limits. Grading The grades will be based n The breakdwn (as weights) is as fllws: Final Exam: 70 Mid-Term Exam: 50 Case Analysis (grup wrk): 30 Hmewrk: 50 Term Prject (grup wrk): 30 Discussin and Cntributin t Class Bbard: 20 Ttal: 250 Please nte that all grup wrk is subject t peer review t prevent free riding. Each grup member will evaluate ther grup members at the end f each grup prject. The class bbard prvides a great pprtunity t have virtual cnversatins. Yur grade fr the class bbard cntributin (20) will be based n the quantity and quality f yur pstings. The bbard has been rganized tw sectins: The first sectin is t facilitate pinins, thughts, analysis f tpics in digital

3 tranfrmatin and the secnd sectin t address curse lgistics issues. Yu will be graded n yur pstings t the analysis prtin n the discussin bard. A fllw-up n an existing psting will carry mre weight than starting a new discussin thread. Abut 8-10 quality pstings, spread evenly thrughut the semester, (including at least 5 pstings that are fllw-ups n existing pstings) can earn yu the 20 pints. Only pstings time stamped befre Dec 8th, 11:59 PM will cntribute tward yur class bbard grade. The term prject cnsists f a paper. Yu may chse t add an implementatin aspect/prf f cncept t supprt yur paper. But, the implementatin part will nt be a requirement fr this distance curse. The paper shuld fcus n managerial issues and use the framewrks intrduced in class n startegy, peratins and implementatin. Examples include: A challenging demnstratin prject that shwcases EC technlgies in use in any interesting applicatin cntext. The system develpment shuld be supprted by an executive summary, a business case and analysis and design dcuments (use cases). Impact f the WWW n industries (e.g., healthcare, gvernment, banking, entertainment, publishing); develpment f new rganizatinal frms Scietal impact f electrnic cmmerce (e.g., privacy and cnfidentiality, stratificatin in sciety) The law and electrnic cmmerce (e.g., intellectual prperty rights, taxatin, crypt-exprt plicy) Review f key infrmatin technlgy enablers f electrnic cmmerce (e.g., electrnic payment, Web standards, cryptgraphy) The term prject will be a grup prject. Each grup will cnsist f fur t five students. The paper shuld be well researched and be riginal. Plan t make gd use f the resurces pinted t in the sectin n Textbks and ther resurces and the term paper page. Its length shuld be abut 25 pages. Case Studies Yu will have three case study assignments thrughut this curse. The bjective here is t visualize a prblem; frmulate it int clear bjectives; analyze the strategic, technlgical, peratinal, and rganizatinal cmpnents and prpse a slutin that will best slve this multi-dimensinal prblem. These HBS/Stanfrd case studies have been mailed t yu alng with the curse packet. Fllwing are sme guidelines regarding the case studies: 1. Each grup f 4-5 students (same team as term paper) will wrk n the case studies. Please cntact me (sumitha@andrew.cmu.edu) r the TA's if yu need t be assigned t a prject/case study grup. 2. In rder t keep everyne n track, each case study will be analyzed using the key questins psted in the "Curse Dcuments" Sectin. 3. The grup pages feature f the blackbard will be used t discuss the case studies. This mechanism will ensure that every team member's participatin is "n the recrd". At the end f the discussin perid a designated persn (by the team) will cmpile/cmbine the grup's analysis and submit this via the digital drp bx. 4.
