1 The university offers a diverse range of engineering degrees including: aircraft engineering, electrical, electronic, mechanical and energy engineering, ensuring graduates are in an excellent position to take advantage of job opportunities arising in the growing engineering industry. The engineering sector currently employs 126,720 people, 5.5% of total employment in the Scottish Economy. Replacement of workers moving into retirement is expected to create a large number of employment opportunities in the future, with the majority of jobs being in managerial, professional, skilled trades and process engineering, along with plant and machine operative roles. The 2015 Government Economic Strategy (GES) for Scotland identifies energy as one of seven growth sectors. The Skills Development Scotland Skills Investment Plan for the Energy Sector predicts an average of 5,200-9,500 job opportunities per year to With superb natural resources, our region is bidding to be a world capital for renewable energy. Local companies are undertaking ground-breaking work, from research and development to full-scale test facilities. At the university, we are actively involved in research in wave and tidal energy; aerodynamics and aircraft engine design; advanced graphics for flight simulation; and the reduction of domestic energy consumption. of 5,200-9,500 job opportunities per year to Engineering

5 Profiles Thomas Bailey is currently in his third year of the BEng Mechanical Engineering at North Highland College UHI, Thurso campus. He explains: I chose the University of the Highlands and Islands because it was local and I heard good reviews about the courses run in the university. I have always enjoyed science and technology and making a move into the engineering side of this suited me best because I prefer to learn by working with hands-on projects. Our lecturers are great as they teach all of the necessary theoretical information in class and then they give us time in the workshops to try it out practically. I decided to study this particular course because of the practical experience it offered, which some other universities didn t provide. And I m really glad I did because I graduated with a first-class honours degree and came first in my class! Studying at the University of the Highlands and Islands was the best choice I ve ever made. The course was well-structured, the lecturers knowledgeable and supportive throughout, and as a result I ve landed an excellent graduate job. Coleen Greig, BEng (Hons) Aircraft Engineering graduate Working with the University of the Highlands and Islands as a key partner organisation is a priority for SSE because we are committed to maximising local employment and benefits from our investments throughout the region. It is essential that the young people of the Highlands and Islands benefit directly from the education, training and job opportunities arising from SSE s plans to deliver the low-carbon economy of the future. The University of the Highlands and Islands and SSE are working together to realise these opportunities. George Baxter, Head of Pipelines, Training and Development, SSE Renewables
