The School of Service Industries includes Care, Hair and Beauty, Hospitality, Sport, Animal Care, Social Sciences and Learning Opportunities. Joan Thorne, Head of School for Service Industries Introduction to the course This course is aimed at those who wish to participate in sport, lead others in coaching sessions and those who wish to work directly with athletes in helping them to improve their performance. It will help you lay the foundations for a career in the sport and fitness industry. The course has an exciting mix of practical subjects which are studied alongside related theory, giving you the opportunity to develop new skills, improve on existing skills and gain an in-depth understanding of sports coaching and development subjects. Due to the practical nature of the course, you should be enthusiastic to engage in physical activity and be prepared to participate in many different activities including (but not restricted to) football, basketball, athletics volleyball and weight training. The HND is a group award that is formed from a framework of SQA units, which are studied at SCQF Level 7 in first year, and SCQF Level 8 in second year. In addition, further optional national governing body coaching awards are offered to enhance the employability of each student. Entry requirements Applicants should have two relevant Higher qualifications at grade C or above. For those returning to education, life skills and experience in the workplace may allow entry subject to availability.

In Year 1 you will study: Sports Coaching Theory and Practice Conduct and Ethics for Sport and Fitness Practitioners Nutrition for Fitness, Health and Exercise Strength and Conditioning: An Introduction Anatomy, Physiology and Energy Systems Research in Sport and Fitness: An Introduction Coaching Children Coaching of Sports: An Introduction Work Experience Sports Development: An Introduction Assist in a Sport or Fitness Related Event First Aid for Sport and Fitness Psychology of Sports Coaching Coaching and Developing Sport: Graded Unit 1 Prevention and Rehabilitation of Sports Injuries In Year 2 you will study: Sports Mechanics Managing a Sport or Fitness Related Event Fitness Testing for Sport Inclusive Sports Provision: An introduction Psychology of Sports Performance Sports Development and Research Coaching of Sports Performance Development Personal Development Planning Improving Coaching in Sport Fitness Conditioning in Sport Coaching and Developing Sport: Graded Unit 2 Coaching and Developing Sport: Graded Unit 3 Nutrition for Sports Performance Assessment methods This course is mainly assessed on a continuous basis through the completion of essays, observed practical performances, written evidence, presentations and group-based projects. However, for many subjects you will be required to sit an end of year/end of unit assessment. The course does not include an external end of year examination. Please note that there is a significant amount of research and project-based work in year 2 for completion of your Graded Units. Dress code Students will be expected to purchase at least one item of College sports clothing. This clothing carries the North East Scotland College logo, is high quality and represents very good value for money. All students accessing Aberdeen Sports Village are expected to wear college kit at all times. Equipment Equipment lists will be provided. Students studying at HND level are also expected to have access to a laptop/similar device for use in class. Course progression Students who successfully complete this course may progress to degree level study at one of our associate universities.
