Teaching and Assessment Teaching involves a mix of lectures, tutorials and practical work. Assessment is by a combination of coursework and examination. The first two years are mainly assessed by examinations, with project assignments. By the final year, coursework assessment principally through the design project and research dissertations accounts for 50% of the final assessment. Programme Information Our programmes cover the principal disciplines of quantity surveying and construction project management. Active links with industry ensure a high quality education that is firmly grounded in the real world. BSc (Hons) Construction Project Management This programme will enable you to manage construction projects from inception to the point at which a building is occupied, including throughout all stages of the design and construction process. Much of the curriculum is concerned with the management and supervision of construction sites and the resource planning associated with large-scale projects. There is also a strong emphasis on construction technology as well as on courses that give students a background in valuation and procurement. BSc (Hons) Quantity Surveying Maximising value for money in construction projects is crucial when dealing with tight budgets and strict contractual agreements. A quantity surveyor advises on these issues at all stages of a project and must therefore understand construction technology, legal issues and how to plan and monitor costs. This programme provides you with all of the skills and knowledge necessary to become a successful quantity surveyor. Work Experience Students have the opportunity to gain work experience in the third year via the Culture of External MENToring (CEMENT) programme, which links students with professionals in practice (see more in the section on the next page). In level 2, all students have the opportunity to participate in the Constructionarium programme, which provides hands-on construction experience of building scaled-down versions of buildings and structures. 3 Special Features CEMENT Scheme From level 3, the industrial mentoring scheme known as CEMENT links undergraduate students with professionals in practice (many of whom are Heriot- Watt alumni). This allows students to discuss the relevance of course content, approaches to study and career aspirations with a professional who can draw upon their own experiences. CEMENT has so far proved highly successful, with students gaining access to work placements, site visits and graduate employment opportunities through the scheme. Such interaction between students and industry is imperative in moving the profession forward and supporting the next generation of built environment professionals. Accreditation The BSc (Hons) Construction Project Management programme is accredited by RICS and CIOB, while the BSc (Hons) Quantity Surveying programme is RICSaccredited. Other Features Some courses involve collaboration with students from other disciplines in the School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure and Society. There are also opportunities for students to obtain bursaries and industrial experience courtesy of leading construction organisations. Graduate Profile Simon Thornton- Smith BSc (Hons) Quantity Surveying Associate Director, Faithful+Gould I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Heriot-Watt, and I found the campus facilities and location were a huge help towards the achievement of my degree. The gym and sports facilities are exceptional, and the library and study rooms well maintained with more than enough IT equipment. But it was the people who provided the best experiences Heriot-Watt has some great people working across all functions, from lecturing to catering. Completing the Quantity Surveying programme positioned me well for entering the construction industry. The programme provided the technical knowledge I require in my role, but the University also encouraged my social and interactive skills. I now also appreciate the high regard in which Heriot-Watt and its undergraduate programmes are held by the industry. Heriot-Watt is a great place to study. Roles in which graduates are employed vary widely and include quantity surveyor, graduate engineer and site manager.
