2 BUSINESS AND FINANCE Edinburgh College Business School offers a range of SQA accredited courses to prepare you for the fast-paced and ever changing business & finance sector. You will explore key areas of business, including creating business plans, analysing industry sectors and financial and management accountancy strategies, all skills that employers are looking for. Business courses will also develop your skills in administration, IT, finance and legal services. The demand for strong business minded students is high and we aim to give you the skills you need to thrive in your chosen career. You will gain fantastic business experience by managing annual events, including charity events that raise thousands of pounds. We also believe that up-to-date knowledge is key for preparing students for industry. Guest speakers regularly attend classes to give you tips and advice from the sector. Higher National Diploma (HND) Business & Finance programmes offer clear progression routes to university or further study. Business & finance qualifications will make you ready for a diverse career. EVENT ORGANISATION // VALENTINES EVENT 2015 Every year NC Administration students organise an event as part of their course, this year they took on the challenge of organising a Valentines Event to raise money for the Breast Cancer Campaign. It allowed students to develop their knowledge and skills regarding the practicalities of organising a real event. They were involved in the pre-planning process of event organisation, the implementation of the planned event and evaluation of their experience, roles and individuals involved in the organisation of an event. Having the confidence to speak to other people was a real challenge for me. Working on our Valentine s Event helped me to feel more confident. It was fun organising and preparing for the event and on the day itself. Everyone worked as a team we came together as a group and achieved our targets. 3 BUSINESS AND FINANCE SHONAGH DONALDSON // HND ACCOUNTING When I started at Edinburgh College I enrolled on the HNC Accounting course. I had originally planned to go straight to university after completing the HNC, but after careful consideration and discussion with my lecturers I decided to defer university for a year and went on to study the HND Accounting course. Having completed the HND, I began studying accounting at Edinburgh Napier University in 2012, with direct entry into third year and I graduated in July A month later, I started working with a Chartered Accounting firm in Edinburgh as a Tax Trainee. I am currently working towards attaining the Association of Taxation Technician (ATT) qualification and in the future I plan to become a Chartered Tax Advisor (CTA). I strongly believe that I would not be where I am today had I chosen to go straight to university without going to college first. 4 BUSINESS AND FINANCE GRAHAM // HNC/HND ACCOUNTING I have lived and worked in Edinburgh for over 30 years. Following redundancy in 2010 aged 43 I decided to change career and study accountancy. I enrolled on the HNC/ HND Accounting course and from the first day knew I d made the right choice. I thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience and whilst there discovered I could apply to university. I subsequently gained direct entry into the 3rd year of Accountancy and Business Law at Heriot Watt University, graduating in 2014 with a first class honours degree. After submitting many applications I gained a trainee accounting position at George & Co Accountants in Edinburgh. Without college I would not have had the confidence to go to university which opened up many more opportunities to me than without the degree. The education I received at college was both relevant and practical, without which I would not have been offered the position I am in today. 05 Edinburgh College Business and Finance 06

You will also study Taxation, Scots business and contract law and undertake an integrated project during the academic year. HNC Accounting S FT I This intensive January start course runs over 18 weeks and provides a firm understanding of financial and management accounting fundamentals. The course is enhanced with business relevant subjects complimenting the core accounting content. Access to HN Accounting S PT I This 18 week course provides you with the underpinning knowledge and skills of accounting, and can be a platform for progression to HNC/D Accounting. Access to Accounting S FT An introduction to bookkeeping and accounting. You ll also learn how to record financial transactions. Administration and IT HND Administration and Information Technology Mi FT I Develop IT and problem-solving skills, as well as an understanding of business administration to pursue a career as an administrator, finance, marketing, human resource or personal assistant. HNC Administration and Information Technology Mi PT I Develop high level IT and problem-solving skills needed for your future career, in addition to gaining essential theoretical knowledge of administration and information technology. HNC Administration and Information Technology - Final Credits This course is the final section in our suite of personal development units. Successful completion of this course in conjunction with successful completion of PDA in Administration and PDA in IT in Business will complete an HNC in Administration & Information Technology. PDA Administration This course can be completed either with the PDA IT in Business as part of the whole HNC Administration and IT award or as a stand-alone course. You will study areas such as office admin, technologies and personal development. PDA IT in Business This course can be completed either with the PDA Administration as part of the whole HNC Administration and IT award. You will develop IT skills so you can process information and create complex business documents. PDA Medical Administration Develop the essential technical and administrative knowledge you need to work in medical administration by studying relevant credits from HNC Administration and Information Technology. NC Administration Mi FT Develop your knowledge and skills in the key areas of IT, Reception and Administration. Other subjects include, for example, Event Organisation and Human Resources. You may progress to a number of HNC/D programmes. Preparation for an Admin Role Mi FT This course is geared heavily towards employment and contains a wide range of practical tasks which are designed to enable you to develop good administrative skills needed to work in an office. You may also progress to NC Administration. Preparation for an Admin Role with Business English This course is for candidates who are not native English speakers. You will develop administrative and IT skills and study for an ES certificate, preparing you for work in an office environment. You may also progress to NC Administration. On completion of the HNC you will be well-placed to progress onto study a business-related subject at university or further your chances of achieving advancement in the workplace. The course runs for the duration of 2 years with 1 day's teaching time per week. Access to HN Business S FT I Learn the essential skills you need to progress onto our HNC/D Business course. You will be introduced to a wide variety of units which will give you a strong foundation in core business subject areas. NC Business Mi S FT Get introduced to a range of business areas including accounting, economics, law, marketing, communication and IT, as well as developing an understanding of how organisations work. Access to Business with NPA Mi S FT Learn the essential skills needed in future studies and career paths. This course includes subject areas such as accounting, business enterprise, marketing and communications. HND Legal Services S FT Develop a basic understanding of Scots law and legal procedures, in line with current professional practice. You ll build your confidence levels in a variety of specialised legal areas. NC Legal Services S FT An introduction to law subjects where you will develop essential skills and knowledge, vital to supporting your future career in legal administration or a business where legal awareness is valuable. Human Resource Management HND Human Resource Management S FT This course will provide you with a key understanding of people management. The course will also ensure you`re well-prepared to progress your studies at degree-level in a range of human resource management-related programmes. HNC Human Resource Management S FT EV I This course is the perfect opportunity to develop your knowledge and understanding of people management - necessary for carrying out managerial tasks within a variety of organisational structures. Access to HN Human Resource Management An introduction to human resource management.
