3 NC BUSINESS NC ADMINISTRATION (SCQF 5/6) This one-year course introduces you to the knowledge and practical skills you ll need to work in the business sector. Achieve 12 units at level 5 or above and you will be awarded the National Certificate in Business at Level 5. Complete the course successfully and you ll be able to study for further qualifications at HNC level. Three or more relevant Standard Grade passes including English at Grade 3 or above, or equivalent (Intermediate 1 or 2 at C or above) You ll study eight mandatory units Recording Cash Data, PC Passport: IT Software Spreadsheet and Database, PC Passport: IT Software Word Processing and Presenting Information, Communications, Enterprise Activity, Marketing: Basic Principles, Skills for Customer Care, Market Operations and the Scottish Economy. You must also complete 4 optional units to obtain the NC Business Group Award. Students will complete an additional 6 optional units further developing skills and knowledge relevant to a contemporary business environment. The aim of this course is to equip you with the crucial skills and knowledge which will allow you to pursue a career as an Administrator in the business environment. Assessments during the course are ongoing and involve both practical and theoretical tasks. You ll develop specialist skills in IT, project management, research and planning. 5 HNC/D BUSINESS (SCQF 7/8) The course provides skills and knowledge necessary for many careers typically in industry, banking, insurance, civil service, local government and distribution. Today, the internet is an important part of business, so we have updated the course to include analysing and using information for strategic purposes. HNC One Higher pass in an appropriate subject such as Business Management, Modern Studies, Economics, History, English, OR: NC in Business or appropriate NQ with passes in Communication, Business Decision Areas, Economics and Finance HND Two Higher passes in appropriate subjects such as Business Management, Modern Studies, Economics, English, History, OR: An NC in Business or an appropriate NC with passes in Communication, Economics, Finance, Law For entry to the second year of the HND: 15 credits, including a pass in Graded Unit 1, from the first year of your HND Business If you have three Higher Grade passes, you may be able to take the Diploma of Higher Education in Business see page 64 for details. It also provides a breadth of study and a mix of skills that qualify you for other careers and for degree-level education. 7 DIPLOMA OF HIGHER EDUCATION (BUSINESS) (SCQF 8) The course is a collaboration between City of Glasgow College and the University of Strathclyde Glasgow designed to give you entry straight into the third year of the BA degree programme at Strathclyde Business School a qualification highly regarded by employers. Three Higher Grade passes at Grade C or above, including English (or alternatively, suitable subjects such as Modern Studies, History or Economics) and Two other passes at Standard Grade or equivalent at band 2 or above, preferably including Mathematics or Intermediate 2 passes will also be considered Year One Business Law, Economics, Managing People, Principles of Marketing, Psychology, Information Technology and Statistics. Year Two You will develop in more detail two of the principal subjects from year one. Marketing Subjects: Consumer Behaviour/Marketing Research. Law Subjects: Discrimination Law/Employment Law. Human Resource Management Subjects: Work and Organisational Psychology/Work Psychology for Human Resource Management. Core Subject: Management Development 2. The NC programme provides a comprehensive introduction to accounting concepts and procedures. It also lays the foundation for further study at HNC/D level. Three or more Standard Grade passes at Grade 3 or above, or equivalent (Intermediate 1 or 2 at C or above) Candidates without these passes who have relevant work experience will be considered The units you ll study include: Financial and Management Accounting, Computer Applications: Accounting, Preparing Final Accounts, Developing Skills for Employment, Handling Wages & Salaries, Information Technology for Administrators. You will also study optional units. Career you would be able to apply for accounting work at an administrative or clerical level Continuing study once you have completed this course you should be able to progress to HNC Accounting course at the College, which in turn leads to an HND, and then a university course One year, starting in August. 8 HNC/D ACCOUNTING (SCQF 7/8) This course will prepare you for further study at University or for the courses run by professional accounting organisations like ACCA, CIPFA and CIMA. It will also equip you with the knowledge and understanding you need to begin work in an accounts department in industry or the public sector. It includes the information technology skills employers require in today s job market. The course suits both those with or without previous accounting knowledge. One Higher Grade pass at Grade C or above preferably in one of the following: English, Mathematics, Physics or Accounting and Finance, (other Highers or 3 Intermediate 2 Grade A passes may be considered by the Curriculum Leader) OR: A NC Accounting Group Award or a NC in another discipline with at least 15 credits, OR: Work experience may also be considered in lieu of qualifications HND 2nd year direct entry: an HNC Accounting with 12 or more credits, including all mandatory credits HNC (HND Year 1) The core units you ll study include: Recording Financial Information, Preparing Final Accounts, Using Financial Accounting Software, Management Accounting using Information Technology, Cost Accounting, and Accounting Graded Unit 1. You can also choose from optional units. HND (Year 2) The core units you ll study include: Financial Reporting and Analysis, Accounting for Specialised Transactions, Management Accounting for Decision Making, Management Accounting for Planning and Control, Business Taxation, and Accounting Graded Units 2 and 3. You can also choose from optional units. Career accounting firms or accounts departments in businesses, government bodies and many other organisations Continuing study HNC: go on to complete an HND by studying at City of Glasgow College for another year or join the final level of the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) Day Release course at this College. HND: apply for second or third year of a University degree course. With an HND you are also exempt from the foundation-level exams for the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) and the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) and can therefore proceed to study at their higher levels. Three Intermediate 2 passes at Grade 3 or above (or equivalent), one of which should be English The core units you ll study include: Scottish Legal Framework, Law in Employment, Law of Contract, Property Law, Family Law, Crime in Society, Introduction to Legal Rights and Obligations, and Introduction to Consumer and Investor Protection. HND The subjects you ll study include: Commercial Law, Scottish Legal System, Scots Private Law, Property Law, Communication, Ethics & Cash Handling, and Legal Research Techniques. Career HNC: solicitors firms, the Scottish Legal Aid Board, Police Service, Scottish Courts Service, and legal departments in local authorities and the financial sector. HND: paralegals in solicitors firms, careers in the Scottish Legal Aid Board, Police Service, Scottish Courts Service, legal departments in local authorities and organisations in the financial sector. Continuing study HNC: apply for second year of the HND Legal Services. HND: apply for second year BA Law at the University of the West of Scotland and BA Business Law at Edinburgh Napier University, and Degree courses at other universities. If you achieve the stipulated grades of the University admissions officers, there are opportunities for you to apply for the LLB Degree with University of Strathclyde, University of Glasgow or Dundee University. Stirling University and Aberdeen also provide opportunity to study at LLB level. LLB applications should be accompanied by a high standard of achievement throughout all subjects across the two years of the HND and a positive level of attendance throughout your studies. 11 NC ADVERTISING & PUBLIC RELATIONS (SCQF 6) Want a career in the advertising and public relations sector or intend to go on to higher level courses? On this course you ll produce advertising campaign materials and public relations media products, and put industry practices into action. You ll also promote a real event, following a live brief. Three or more passes at Standard Grade or equivalent at band 3 or above that must include English in some cases a combination of modules and Standard Grades will be accepted Good communication skills Before we offer you a place, we ll invite you to an interview. You ll need to show a genuine interest in an advertising and PR career The core units you ll study include: Advertising; An Introduction, the Role and Functions of Public Relations in Organisations, Marketing Mix, Advertising: Media Campaign Planning, Implementing a Public Relations Campaign, and Introduction to Branding. 12 HNC/D ADVERTISING & PUBLIC RELATIONS (SCQF 7/8) The course trains you for a career in the communication industries. You ll develop an understanding of the nature and function of advertising and public relations, within a wider marketing and marketing communications framework. You ll also learn how to communicate effectively in this environment. You ll make presentations and pitches to industry professionals, prepare project work and carry out assignments. You ll meet a number of industry guest speakers and contacts and in second year, there is a course educational study visit to New York. There is a large social media component to the course, reflecting industry practice you will study units in this area, and be then expected to use appropriate social media throughout the course. It covers marketing theory and buyer behaviour, as well as the main operational areas of marketing research, promotion and selling. Course work includes projects and assignments as well as traditional extended response questions. You ll be assessed continuously throughout the course. You will have access to experience the fashion opportunities in Glasgow, the UK s largest shopping location outside London. Towards the end of the course you ll put on your own themed fashion show.
