A Career in Dental Technology
The role and responsibility of the Dental Technician A dental technician is an essential member of the dental team and carries out all aspects of technical dentistry to complement the clinical work undertaken by the dentist. Dental Technicians manufacture, repair and advise on custom made dental appliances under the prescription of a dentist or other qualified Dental Care Professional. In agreement with the patient, a dentist prescribes the most suitable course of treatment, which may involve technical work, such as a crown, bridge, denture, implant or orthodontic appliance. A prescription, providing the relevant information is then sent to the dental laboratory, together with an impression of the patient s mouth and teeth for reference and to ensure the best possible fit prior to completion. Dental laboratories may be located within dental practices, hospitals or in commercial business premises. All types of dental laboratory may supply work for both private and National Health Service (NHS) patients.
The role of a Dental Technician Dental technicians carry out work which will generally come under one of three different types: Removable Prosthodontics - Dentures This area of dental technology requires the dental technician to design and construct complete and partial dentures to replace missing natural teeth. Fixed Prosthodontics Crown & Bridge The dentist will typically prescribe such work when the tooth or teeth have suffered significant damage that is beyond a reasonable direct restoration and the supporting tissue remains healthy. Bridges are used to replace teeth where provision of a removable denture can be avoided. Orthodontics An orthodontic technician produces removable appliances, commonly known as braces. These are used to make adjustments to the positioning of teeth in the mouth. The technician will construct either removable or fixed appliances using wires which when tightened will provide sufficient force to slowly move the teeth to the required position to improve appearance and jaw function.
Regulation and Professional Registration with the General Dental Council The GDC is the organisation which regulates dental professionals in the United Kingdom. It is a legal requirement that all dentists, dental nurses, dental technicians, clinical dental technicians, dental hygienists, dental therapists and orthodontic therapists must be registered with the GDC in order to work in the United Kingdom. Dental nurses, dental technicians, clinical dental technicians, dental hygienists, dental hygienists and dental therapists are known as Dental Care Professionals (DCPs) The GDC aims to protect patients within the United Kingdom by regulating dental staff, assuring the quality of dental education and setting standards for conduct that all dental professionals must adhere to. Dental Technicians in training are temporarily exempt from this requirement but must be able to demonstrate that they are working towards one of the registerable qualifications on a recognised training programme. However students must abide by the GDC Student Fitness to Practice guidelines and be able to demonstrate during their pre-registration training that they have the knowledge, skills and attitudes expected of a dental care professional. For more information on the GDC, access their website at
Training There are two dental technology training programmes available in Scotland that enable trainee dental technicians to gain their professional qualification and registration with GDC. University of Highlands and Islands (UHI) Higher Education Diploma in Dental Technology (DipHE) Open to those employed as dental technician trainees, the DipHE programme includes a mix of online, workplace and face-to-face teaching. Students will study the course on a part-time basis over three years with workplace supervision from a registered dental technician. Teaching is delivered by blended learning, including two days of face-to-face study days per month, weekly online tutorials through a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) with practical work undertaken in the student s workplace supervised by a GDC registered dental technician. Edinburgh College: Edinburgh College s Diploma in Dental Technology Edinburgh College provide both full and part time training programmes for trainee dental technicians working towards achieving the National Certificate (NC) Dental Technology and the Higher National Certificate (HNC) from Edinburgh College s Diploma in Dental Technology. Entry Requirements Each education establishment has different entry requirements. Please visit the websites below to view these: University of Highlands and Islands: Edinburgh College:
Continuing Professional Development Continuing Professional Development (CPD) provides evidence that a registered DCP s: Knowledge is up to date and relevant to practice Professional performance is up to the standards needed to maintain registration Behaviour meets the standard set out in the GDC s guidance Standards for the Dental Team. The GDC require that all registered DCPs complete at least 150 hours of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) every five years to maintain registration. CPD should include the following subjects: Medical Emergencies (at least 10 hours) Disinfection and Decontamination (5 hours) Materials and Equipment (5 hours) The GDC also recommend that registrants keep up to date in the following areas: Legal and ethical issues Complaint handling Oral cancer early detection Further Qualifications Registered dental technicians can develop further within specialist areas of dental technology and/or clinical dental technology.
