1 The university has a range of art and design degrees, from fine art, working with textiles, visual design and communication to interactive media, each providing graduates with skills required for self-employment and those sought after by employers in the creative industries. In most of our art and design degrees, final year students exhibit their work at their own degree show, as well as planning and marketing the event, it gives students the opportunity to showcase their talents to the public and industry representatives. The creative industries sector is diverse and fast-growing and has been identified by the Scottish Government as one of six key sectors because of the potential to contribute to sustainable economic growth. With a strong international reputation, Scotland s creativity is recognised throughout the world and contributes 3.06 billion to the Scottish economy each year, employing 68,600 people. Craft, design, performing and visual arts are all growth sectors and graduates from our degrees are well placed to compete in this diverse industry. As an employer and an animation producer I see a lot of work from universities across the country and year-on-year the University of the Highlands and Islands keeps showing the best work of all the future creatives. 2 Contemporary Textiles BA (Hons) This degree, based at Shetland College UHI, builds on the reputation of the northern island communities for quality textiles. Students gain the technical skills and knowledge to produce innovative textiles, and the business skills to market them globally. Regular visits to studios and galleries keep them up-to-date with current practice, as well as increasing their awareness of market trends, strengthening their understanding of contemporary and historical art and design. Students also work on live projects, for example, with the Shetland Textile Museum and for Shetland Wool Week, and attend a textile trade fair. Fairs attended by previous students include the Shetland International Textile Festival, Premiere Vision in Paris and Berlin Fashion Week. Fine Art BA (Hons) The BA (Hons) Fine Art equips students with the capacity to make, think and reflect: skills which are necessary for a practising artist and highly valued by employers. Students are taught by an experienced team of practitioners, including visiting lecturers and professional artists, who guide them through a range of fine art media such as drawing, painting, digital media, photography, mixed media drawing, and printmaking. From year two students have their own studio space to explore their creativity and refine their technique. A highlight of their studies is the degree show in the final year, when students exhibit their work to the public. Students also have the opportunity to enrich their experience with frequent cultural and environmental trips. Year 1: CertHE Year 2: DipHE Highers: CCC A levels: CC Must include English. 3 Fine Art Textiles BA (Hons) The BA (Hons) Fine Art Textiles has been carefully designed to enable students to acquire a range of fine art textiles skills and enhance their career prospects in this field. Learning is very much research-based and students develop their practice through diverse studio work and cultural trips. Throughout the course students examine both traditional and non-traditional textile media, developing and applying skills to individual project work. From year two they have their own studio space to explore their creativity and refine their technique. A hugely beneficial aspect of the course is the degree show in the final year where students exhibit their work to the public. Susan Timmins, local Shetland artist, offers placements to Contemporary Textiles students: Every year the students rise to the challenge of their placement and make work that is original, inventive and very thoughtful. 4 Visual Design and Communication BA (Hons) The BA (Hons) Visual Design and Communication gives students the opportunity to acquire the skills to generate ideas and solve problems creatively, skills required for a successful career within the creative industries. Working through a range of practical projects, students develop a clear understanding of the creative design process, techniques and business to produce powerful and emotive solutions that impact on society. Work placements give them the chance to further define their own creative identity and explore the evolving demands of industry. The opportunity for national and international study trips also enhance their experience. This course builds on the successful, industryrelated HNC/D Visual Communication, giving students a good grounding for degree level study. Inverness College UHI Perth College UHI W213 Interactive Media BA (Hons) The BA (Hons) Interactive Media, which builds on the popular HNC/D courses, gives students a professional grounding in the principles surrounding the development of interactive and digital media products. The course gives them the scope to specialise in a number of key areas including: graphic design; 2D/3D animation; web design; app/game development; audio/ video production; and visual effects. Through opportunities to work with external clients on real industry projects, the course encourages creativity and entrepreneurial qualities giving students the solid theoretical and technical understanding they need for a successful career within the creative industries. Year 1: HNC Year 2: HND Year 1 (HNC): Highers: C A levels: D Moray College UHI I610 The university is developing a BA (Hons) Professional Practice in Contemporary Art degree providing our HNC/D Contemporary Art students with a progression option.

5 Profiles In my final year I attended a trends workshop, organised by Highlands and Islands Enterprise, which helped to ensure that my own designs and fabrics were on trend for contemporary interiors. I developed a range of digitally printed and screen printed fabrics focused around the theme of Shetland and Oman, considering their unexpected shared aesthetics. My experience at university has prepared me for a future career in design and I ve enjoyed working alongside other budding designers. Helen Ball, BA (Hons) Contemporary Textiles graduate I work mainly with drawing and film; making my work as immersive as possible, which means that sound and scale play an important part in the making of the pieces. I am interested in how the viewer reacts. Fiona MacIssac, BA (Hons) Fine Art graduate Fiona s work featured in the 2015 Royal Scottish Academy (RSA) New Contemporaries Exhibition, a curated annual exhibition which focuses on the finest emerging artists and architects in Scotland. Dosi Dimchovski moved from Bulgaria to study the BA (Hons) Fine Art at Moray College UHI. He explains: I like the style of teaching from our lecturers which is relaxed, informal and easy to learn from. We are also given a lot of freedom to develop our work in our own studio space. Dosi is pictured here in his own studio space which all students have from year two onwards allowing them to build up their portfolio of work.
