3 What will I be learning? This Foundation Degree has been developed in response to the needs of our nationally and internationally recognised local employers and the skills that young engineers will need. The course will allow you to study, in addition to the core science and analytical modules, specialist modules relevant to your chosen pathway - Mechanical or Electrical/Electronic Engineering. 1st stage Core: Applied Mathematics in Engineering Mechanical and Electrical Concepts Industrial Control and Automation with Applications Management Theory and Practice of Health, Safety and Risk Assessment 2nd stage Sustainable Engineering Business Management for Engineers Computational Mathematics Independent Research Project Developing Research and Practice Mechanical Engineering Pathway: Introduction to Materials Mechanical Science Electrical/Electronic Engineering Pathway: Analogue Electronics Electrical & Electronic Science Product Design with CAD and CAM applications Manufacturing and Materials Polyphase Systems and Applications Electrical / Electronic and Digital Applications You will be taught through tutorials, laboratory work and practical tasks on industry standard software and industrial equipment. You will also have access to research tools such as National Instruments LabView hardware/software simulation system. You will be able to take advantage of AutoDesk s Student Software programme. Each module will be assessed individually through internally set assignments, laboratory reports, tests, reports, portfolios and research projects. You will need to engage in self-study and research, and will also undertake a work based research project. The HNC runs alongside the Foundation Degree; if you already have an HNC you can go straight into the second stage of the FdSc, subject to application and interview. You can study part time (3 years for the FdSc, 2 years for the HNC) or full time (2 years for the FdSc).

4 Excellent facilities Industry standard workshops and equipment Our engineering workshops include Computer Numerically Controlled (CNC) machines, centre lathes, vertical, horizontal and universal milling machines, as well as a fully equipped grinding section, forge and heat treatment area. This provides the opportunity not usually found in universities to engage in hands on practical activities to enhance taught subjects. To complement the workshop, there is a fully automated and state-of-the-art programmable logic control (PLC ) suite, a complete motor generator set test bed which encompasses 3 phase inverters and DC generators. We also have electronic circuit simulators and prototyping systems and a purposebuilt Computer Aided Design (CAD) suite with the latest industry standard 3D parametric software. You will find a comprehensive library and extensive online teaching and learning resources ranging from electromechanical engineering and digital electronics through to project management. Energy Centre South Devon College s Energy Centre will be created in a modern, green, completely sustainable eco-house of the future which will showcase all the most up-to-date renewable technologies in a realistic, working environment. The Centre will help to ensure that you can be at the forefront of the sustainable energy revolution.

5 What can I do afterwards? Further study When you have successfully completed the Foundation Degree you may wish to progress to the second or final year of one of the many engineering honours degrees at Plymouth University. Please note there is a deadline for progression applications and places may be subject to availability and interview. Employment Mechanical Engineers develop a huge range of products and services across many industries including: aerospace and automotive design and manufacturing, the armed forces, energy utilities, Student profile: Steve Brown, Mechanical Engineer Steve progressed from a level 2 course to an Advanced Apprenticeship and is now near the end of his HNC, which will then lead to the Foundation Degree second year. The whole experience has given me excellent practical skills as well as the underpinning knowledge I need to further my career. The HNC has really extended my expertise, and the tutors are always there to help with their encouragement and support. In my career so far I ve been given additional responsibilities and promotions, and I ve also had the chance to travel, both with the College to Berlin, Poland and Spain, and also for my employer, Centek Ltd, to Jersey, Sweden and Germany. I am now part of a business expansion plan with visits to the USA scheduled. I m looking forward to a bright future in engineering! engineering construction companies, engineering consultancies, government agencies, medical engineering, and mineral extraction, including the oil and gas industries. There is a demand for Electrical and Electronics graduates to develop advanced telecommunications, automation & control, and integrated computerised systems and equipment. Opportunities in industry include security, energy, aerospace, broadcast technology, health and medical fields, weapons manufacturing, the research departments of government agencies and commercial research and development. Staff profile: Andrew Scott, Lecturer in Engineering Andrew joined the teaching team at South Devon College following a wealth of experience in industry. After his BEng Hons in Manufacturing Engineering at Nottingham Trent University, he worked for a data communications manufacturer as production engineer, moving on to concept design using 3D CAD. He then joined Toshiba Information Systems in Plymouth where he did 3D design of televisions. He then came back to South Devon College where he had originally done his BTEC National Engineering right at the start of his career. Engineering is such a broad subject that every year students will bring something new from their experience into the course. I ve tapped into my own experiences in industry as well to ensure that the course is both enjoyable and industry relevant. I am always very proud of the achievement of my students and enjoy hearing about their career progression following the course.
