There are approximately three hours of contact time for each module per week. Therefore, there will be approximately 12 hours per week of face to face classes. Typically this involves lectures, tutorials and computer lab based classes. In addition to these face to face classes, students will be expected to undertake further independent reading and preparation of work for tutorials and coursework reports. Placement For those students who join the degree in Stages 1 or 2, an optional 48 week salaried work placement in an accounting or finance environment is available in Stage 3. The assessment method utilised within each module will typically be one or a combination of the above methods dependent on the topic concerned, and the intended learning outcome. Grades The University has developed a Grading Scheme for assessment purposes, details of which may be accessed by visiting It is important to note that all grades indicated to students during the course of the academic session are provisional until the deliberations of the Assessment Board for the course. Provisional grades are presented to this Board, which consists of academic staff involved in the course delivery as well as External Examiners, and a final decision is confirmed on the performance of every student for each module undertaken by them. This is subsequently confirmed to each student in a published transcript, and may be accessed electronically on the Student Portal. PLACEMENT / PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE For those students who join the degree in Stages 1 or 2, an optional 12-month salaried work placement in an accounting or finance environment is available in Stage 3. For students opting to follow this route, the placement is an integral part of the degree course and students' progress and contribution on placement are assessed by the placement employer. Students are assigned to a placement supervisor within their organisation who they will report to and who is responsible for assessing the students' progress and achievements. Students are also supported by an academic placement tutor who will visit the placement organisation regularly to ensure satisfactory performance and development. Placement provides an opportunity to apply the skills and learning developed in Stages 1 & 2 and to develop new skills. The flexibility of the course is reflected in the placement and students are able to pursue any aspect of their course into the workplace. The placement scheme is supported by a dedicated School Placement Office which sources placements for undergraduate students. Many of the placements are exclusive placements, available solely to Aberdeen Business School students. Placements are available on a competitive basis and students are required to apply formally for the placements they wish to obtain. Students will normally be expected to participate in a placement interview conducted by the hosting organisation and may be required to participate in an assessment centre process also conducted by the hosting organisation. Current placement employers include Big 4 CA firms, medium and small CA firms as well as multinational companies and financial institutions. After a successful placement, many students are offered a CA Training Contract with the firm on graduation and if this happens then the placement with the firm of chartered accountants can count towards an ICAS training contract requirement. OPPORTUNITIES FOR FURTHER STUDY Most graduates study for a professional qualification with one of the accounting bodies and the degree will usually provide access to postgraduate programmes in UK higher education institutions. The School's Teaching and Learning Committee will monitor developments in these areas, with every module co-ordinator and lecturer being encouraged and supported in the introduction of innovations or enhancements in their teaching methodology and/or assessment techniques. It is recognised that there is an ongoing need to consider other ways to challenge the student, develop his/her transferable skills and inculcate a desire for deep learning. Deep learning is also fostered by providing the student with access to lecture and seminar materials online through a University Intranet that reduces the need for note taking in class and allows them to focus on understanding and digesting information. Throughout the programme the student is encouraged to take an increasing amount of responsibility for his/her own learning, supported by both group and personal tutorials. Assessments in modules normally include a final closed book examination of previously unseen material. This is a requirement for accreditation and exemptions granted by professional accounting bodies. In addition to the examination, in some modules other components of assessment are also used such as closed book class tests held in mid semester under examination conditions, presentations and reports. At Stage One the student acquires theoretical knowledge and understanding of core areas of management and accountancy together with the key professional skills that he/she will require for his/her study and future career. The range of learning activities will include lectures, seminars, computer laboratory work; presentations, small group activities as well as computer based learning and self-study. Assessment in Stage One is designed to form part of the learning process. As such, both formative and summative assessment will be provided. The range of learning activities will include lectures, seminars, computer laboratory work, presentations, small group activities, case studies, and problem-solving activities. Assessment in Stage Two is designed to form part of the learning process. As such, both formative and summative assessment will be provided. At Stage Three the student on the placement route will develop his/her knowledge, understanding and critical appraisal skills in a practical work context. The learning at this stage is clearly student centered; however it is supported both by the work-based supervisor and the Aberdeen Business School Placement tutor. In addition he/she will undertake two distance learning modules in a specialist professional subject. For the student not on placement, he/she will be expected to assume more responsibility for his/her own learning, as he/she undertakes study of more advanced topics in which the emphasis in learning develops from reflection to critical application of information and ideas and evaluation. The range of learning activities will include lectures, seminars, individual and group presentations, small group activities, case studies, and problem-solving activities. Assessment in Stage Three is designed to form part of the learning process, and therefore placements are assessed on an ongoing basis. For taught modules both formative and summative assessment will be employed through different methods of assessments, including examinations, presentations and reports. 16 COURSE SPECIFICATION: Student Learning Experience activity, which contributes to the critical underpinning for all taught courses; the expanding provision of state-of-the-art, purpose-built facilities and buildings. There is no course specific support for teaching and learning. MONITORING OF QUALITY AND STANDARDS There are no course specific methods for evaluation and improvement STUDENT ENGAGEMENT IN QUALITY 'The Bachelor of Arts degree in Accounting and Finance from the Robert Gordon University is highly regarded by employers offering the CA qualification. Over the last few years around 20 graduates per annum have taken up Chartered Accountancy training contracts with a wide range of employers both in the North East of Scotland, and throughout the rest of the UK. The course is seen as highly practical, mixing theory and application at a level, and with a relevance, required by employers. In addition, graduates from Aberdeen Business School have had a very good examination record in the ICAS examinations for many years now. A particular attraction of the course is the work experience year which is highly valued by employers. Many students have found that they have subsequently gone on to complete their Chartered Accountancy training contract with the same employer in which they spent the work experience year. So if a student is looking for a course which is closely tied to the needs of employers and which can, in the long-term, lead to the internationally respected CA qualification, then they should consider the Accounting and Finance course from Aberdeen Business School.' Professor Mark Allison Executive Director, Education The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland 'I really enjoy the Accounting and Finance course at RGU and find it extremely interesting. This is because I have had the opportunity to study a wide variety of different subjects. These subjects are not all accounting based, for example, this Semester I am studying Business Law and Business Information Systems, in which I have had the opportunity to design my own personal website. I feel that this has helped to give me a wider knowledge of the business world and this will no doubt be invaluable throughout my career. In June I begin my placement year with a Chartered Accountancy firm. I am really looking forward to this new experience and I am being given the opportunity to work in both their audit and tax departments. I have never had experience in these areas of accounting before and am really looking forward to the challenge. After graduation I hope to start a training contract with an accountancy firm in order to attain a CA qualification.' Stage 2 Student 'Studying the accounting and finance degree at RGU has been an excellent way of achieving my degree whilst also having the opportunity to gain work experience in a chartered accountancy firm. The accountancy degree is enjoyable, yet challenging with the year's placement in year 3 of the course. The first two years of the degree include varied subjects which keep the degree interesting. Such subjects provide an accountancy and finance education and in addition prepared me for working within a business environment. I currently work for a chartered accountancy firm, which has been a tremendous experience. They have provided me with the opportunity to learn many aspects of the accounting world and what you can do with this degree. This placement has enabled me to be sure that this is what I want to when I finish the degree, and that I wish to carry this on further to do my Chartered Accountancy training. Having this placement is the best way to fully understand the work taught at university, not to mention getting paid for your third year!' 'The key factors that make RGU stand out above other universities are that the staff genuinely seem to care about the students, and every module is carefully thought out to provide the students with opportunities to learn and develop skills that are essential in the workplace. The emphasis on career development is evident throughout the course, with opportunities to attend various careers workshops and employer presentations to gain an understanding of what organisations are looking for when they recruit graduates. RGU provides a realistic representation of the competition for employment and helps students to develop other non academic skills that employers look for. I am currently on placement at one of the Big Four firms in Aberdeen, where I have gained invaluable experience in both audit and accountancy, and I hope to return once I have graduated to work towards the ICAS qualification.' Bachelor of Arts with Honours [BA (Hons)] Accounting and Finance 4

17 COURSE SPECIFICATION: Student Learning Experience 'In my Accounting & Finance degree I have had the opportunity to learn in an enjoyable and relaxed environment. The degree has allowed me to take part in modules not only based on accounts but also IT, Corporate Finance and more practical subjects such as Entrepreneurship. This has allowed me to broaden my range of knowledge and these modules will undoubtedly help in my future career. RGU has provided a good balance between coursework and exams and lecturers have always been at hand to answer any problems I have faced. The university itself is very modern and offers some of the best resources both in terms of equipment and staff. It has an excellent, modern library with huge amounts of resources to help with exams and courseworks. There are also several rooms available full of modern computer equipment which are accessible every day of the week. The course at RGU has given me the opportunity to complete a year's work placement. I've been at my placement employer, a leading independent CA firm, working on a wide variety of jobs. My Placement employer has provided me with my first away business trip which was a great experience. I have also been involved in Accounts preparation, Corporate Finance work and other general accounting work. During my placement I believe my learning has increased p dramatically. There is no substitute for experience and RGU provides this in volumes, offering a great opportunity to the start of a successful career.' Stage 3 Students 'I decided to choose the Accounting and Finance degree at RGU because of my first impressions of the environment. I believed RGU to be a modern, friendly and professional place to undertake my studies. In addition I was very keen on the idea of going to work on placement for a year as I did not know whether I wanted to become an accountant and this seemed the perfect way to "test the water". The RGU experience, much to my surprise, has exceeded my expectations and I feel it has opened my eyes to different aspects of business and accounting and finance. When I first thought about going to university there were a lot of people telling me how I would meet plenty of new people. This I have found to be very true, there is a great opportunity to meet a lot of "interesting" people and make new friends. The staff were very approachable with any problems I had and the environment is in my experience good to work in and have a laugh with your mates. The placement year was a great opportunity for me as I was lucky enough to be taken on by a professional accounting firm in Aberdeen. During the placement I was involved in a variety of different roles which I gained great experience from. At the end of the year I was delighted to be offered a position in the firm as a CA trainee. I obviously accepted the position and start my career in July. 'Deciding on what university to go to is a daunting task. With such a variety, which one should you choose? If I had to choose again, I would still opt for RGU because of the placement experience. There is such a wide selection of places that you can select from large international companies to small local firms. My placement was with one of the largest chartered accountancy firms in Aberdeen. It was a super experience as I had the opportunity to work in a variety of departments including personal tax, audit and accounting services. This was extremely useful as it showed me the different type of careers I could have with an accountancy degree. At the end of my placement year I was offered a C.A. training contract with my Placement employer on on graduation from university. This is great as it has meant that I can concentrate on my final year instead of worrying about trying to find a job. My friends who are trying to find a job are having great success due to the fact that they have had a year's experience which students from other universities do not have. Finally, the experience that I gained while working has also helped enormously with my understanding of fourth year modules. I feel that the placement year has developed me as a person and given me the knowledge and experience to make the right decisions about my future within the accountancy profession.' Graduate 'RGU is and always seems to have been number one for graduate jobs. That's a huge incentive for any student and it certainly was for me. Another big reason for choosing RGU is the meaningful work placements. In fact, both reasons overlap, because the company that I did my placement with is now my employer. Nearly all of the lecturers have worked for the Big Four (accountancy firms), so they really know how to teach you skills that you'll use in your future career.' FEEDBACK FROM STUDENTS The Head of Year meets with Student Representatives each semester to discuss their learning experience. Bachelor of Arts with Honours [BA (Hons)] Accounting and Finance 5
