2 Job Description Context The British Humanist Association (BHA) is the national charity working on behalf of nonreligious people who seek to live ethical and fulfilling lives on the basis of reason and humanity. Founded in 1896, the BHA is trusted by over 25,000 members and supporters and over 90 local and special interest affiliates to promote Humanism. Our policies are informed with the support of over 120 of the UK s most prominent philosophers, scientists, and other thinkers and experts and we seek to advance them with the help of over 100 parliamentarians in membership of the All Party Parliamentary Humanist Group. Our trained and accredited celebrants conduct funerals and other non-religious ceremonies attended by over 250,000 people each year. What do we want? We want a world where everyone lives cooperatively on the basis of shared human values and respect for human rights. We want non-religious people to be confident in living ethical and fulfilling lives on the basis of reason and humanity. What do we do? We promote Humanism, represent the non-religious, and support those who wish to live humanist lives, including through the provision of humanist ceremonies. We campaign for a secular state, challenge religious privilege, and promote equal treatment in law and policy of everyone regardless of religion or belief. We offer a humanist perspective in public debate, drawing on contemporary humanist thought and the worldwide humanist tradition. Our administration is managed by a Head of Operations who is responsible for the finances of the BHA, the internal administration of the BHA, and facilities at 1 Gower Street. The Office Manager is responsible to the Head of Operations for managing the reception and general office functions of the BHA, carrying out agreed administrative tasks for the BHA and its staff, managing staff and volunteers who assist with these functions, and ensuring that all reception and general office tasks are carried out accurately and correctly. The ICT, Database and Web Officer will be responsible to the Head of Operations and work alongside the Office Manager and Administrative Assistant.

3 Role of the The is responsible to the Head of Operations for maintaining and developing ICT systems for internal use, including the CRM database, and websites for external use. Key tasks and activities Internal ICT 1. To support and develop internal office ICT systems and related areas, including: a. Client machines including their installation, security and archive settings. b. Server and network maintenance, including the Exchange system, Active Directory, backup process and network security. c. Relationship with contractors (currently Premier ICT and DEMCO) for additional ICT support where required. d. SQL database and ProgressCRM, liaising with and supporting other staff as required with database configuration, operating and improving administrative processes, database analysis, and training or assistance in use. e. Relationship with ASI Europe (who provide ProgressCRM). f. Staff training and documentation - identify needs and deliver. g. Keeping up to date with developments in ICT, and optimising the use of ICT systems and related processes by the staff team. This may involve advising re purchase of new hardware and software and revising the above relationships. h. Landline telephone system, which is provided by DEMCO. i. Being available for occasional out of office hours support in relation to these systems Administration 2. To support use of the database and website to implement such financial processes as direct debit collections, Gift Aid claims, etc. 3. To administer paper and electronic mailings to members, affiliated groups, and other contacts as appropriate, and support other staff to administer relevant mailings. 4. To support administration of events, processing ticket sales and distributing tickets. Websites 5. To develop, including in relationship with external developers such as NetXtra, website functionality in accordance with needs identified by the BHA. These include

4 a. Relationship and support with NetXtra. b. Relationship and support with RSM2000 for paperless direct debit. c. Making decisions on the extension and functionality of websites, and delivering or commissioning such changes as appropriate. d. Technical support, assistance, training and documentation for staff to develop the sections of the site for which they are responsible. e. Correcting any breakdowns, including being available for occasional out of office hours support. f. Managing BHA webhosting for affiliated groups and satellite websites. 6. To develop, or advise on the development by third parties, of satellite websites (such as Celebrants Network mini-sites, the HumanistLife magazine website, and related information sites designed to deliver good quality information and draw traffic base don keywords to the main BHA website). To manage or make all necessary provision for other staff and volunteers to manage these sites. Miscellaneous 7. To provide effective technical support at events. 8. Any other appropriate duties required by the Head of Operations or the Chief Executive. This is a full-time permanent post, subject to successful completion of a three month probationary period, and will be based at the BHA s offices in London WC1. Salary up to 26,000.

5 Person Specification These criteria are divided into essential and desirable. Candidates not meeting all the essential criteria will not be considered for this post but we do not expect experience across all desirable criteria. An ability to meet at least some of the desirable criteria, however, will be an advantage to candidates. We do not expect any candidates to necessarily meet all the desirable criteria. Essential 1. Experience of administering and maintaining a LAN with VPN, including user, security and file server management 2. Experience of troubleshooting and frontline support 3. Experience developing, managing and testing backup and recovery plans 4. Experience in working with CRM or similar contact databases 5. Experience of the complexity of managing data across multiple environments (development, test, stage) in a high pressure, collaborative culture 6. Experience providing expertise in database upgrade/patching/migration as required 7. Excellent skills in using SQL, Microsoft Office suite, and the Microsoft Server OS Web development knowledge and experience, including CMS-based websites 8. Ability to prioritise conflicting tasks and objectives and remain calm under pressure Desirable 1. Experience of supporting paperless direct debit operations. 2. Experience of the Progress CRM database 3. Experience of using CRM databases for fundraising 4. Experience creating and maintaining websites with WordPress 5. Experience with CSS/XML 6. Experience using Web Host Manager (WHM) and cpanel 7. Experience setting up and maintaining a cloud server service 8. Experience providing in-house training
