3 Introduction The Harvard Medical School Department of Continuing Education and the Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, in cooperation with the founding sponsor of the course, the Department of Anesthesia and Critical Care at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, is offering a highly regarded, comprehensive, nine-month course in structural acupuncture for physicians. This unique course provides practical, hands-on training in acupuncture. The training program is designed to bring together Eastern and Western views of health and disease into a result-oriented acupuncture style. You will learn to evaluate and treat patients using modern Japanese acupuncture techniques that link classical Chinese theory to concrete, understandable clinical diagnostic and treatment techniques. Strong emphasis is also placed on developing a neuroanatomical understanding of pain modulation with acupuncture. The didactic portion of the course will focus on bridging the gap between acupuncture practice and science. The scientific basis of acupuncture and the methodological problems with acupuncture research is presented as part of the discussion of specific clinical conditions throughout the course. Emphasis is placed on comparing and contrasting actual research protocols with clinical treatment methods. This ongoing scientific discussion will provide participants the tools to better lead future research and clinical endeavors in acupuncture. To achieve the highest level of academic and clinical teaching excellence, we have brought together distinguished members of the Harvard Medical School faculty with leaders in the field of Japanese acupuncture, including Ms. Kiiko Matsumoto and Mr. David Euler. Both are internationally recognized Japanese acupuncture theoreticians, and experts on the interpretation of classic Chinese acupuncture texts. They combine their theoretical knowledge with their vast clinical experience and have taught acupuncture both in the United States and abroad for more than 15 years.
4 Course Objectives Upon completion of the course, you will be able to: n Integrate acupuncture diagnostic and therapeutic techniques for managing pain and other medical conditions into your clinical practice. n Apply neuroanatomical approaches to pain modulation with dry needling as an adjunctive treatment technique. n Understand the methodological problems with current clinical research in acupuncture. n Advance your clinical research skills with a solid grounding in both the practice and science of acupuncture. FREE Introductory Lectures Join Us! For a free introductory lecture and workshop July 13 or Sept. 7, :00-7:30 pm Carrie M. Hall Conference Room, Brigham and Women s Hospital, Boston, MA Please RSVP by [email protected] or call x267
