2 The, developed by the Faculty of Extension, University of Alberta, is one of the few university academic-based medical acupuncture training programs in North America. It is designed to provide a stringent, controlled, structured scientific program of study. Student Audience Fully licensed physicians, dentists, or physiotherapists Program Objectives To develop understanding and skill to apply the philosophy, concepts, principles, and clinical practices of acupuncture therapy to conditions not presently amenable to other forms of treatments To develop the competence of medical professionals to practice acupuncture as a tool in treating patients To contribute to the provision of high quality health care To improve the professional practice and help standardize the clinical procedures of acupuncture within the scope of their professional practice Recognition to Practice Acupuncture Successful completion of the University of Alberta is recognized as a qualification to practice acupuncture by the following professional associations: College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons of Saskatchewan Yukon Medical Council Alberta Dental Association College of Physical Therapists of Alberta College of Physical Therapists of British Columbia College of Physical Therapists of Manitoba College of Physical Therapists of Saskatchewan Recognition for Continuing Education Credit Successful completion of the University of Alberta is recognized as qualifying for continuing education credits by the following professional associations: Alberta Dental Association Level III approved for 40 hours of dental-related credit and Levels I, II, and IV approved for a maximum of 50 hours of non-dental credit, for a maximum of 90 hours of total continuing education credit College of Family Physicians of Canada, Alberta Chapter approved for 140 hours of continuing medical education credit Instructor Steven KH Aung, MD, OMD, is a geriatric and family physician who has trained in both eastern and western medicine. Dr. Aung is a strong advocate of teaching medical acupuncture as a safe and effective clinical procedure that is complementary to biomedical therapies, especially in the areas of pain management. He is an Assistant Clinical Professor and Director of Medical Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine. Dr. Aung is the founder of the CPMA and is also a medical acupuncture consultant at the University of Alberta and its affiliated hospitals, and a visiting professor of Traditional Chinese Medicine in China, Japan and Australia. Location of Courses All classes will take place at the University Extension Centre and the Walter C. Mackenzie Health Sciences Centre in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. 3 Program Components This Certificate Program involves 200 credit hours of intensive graduate-level instruction in the theory and clinical practices involved in the ancient Chinese science of acupuncture as interpreted by modern medicine. Instruction is provided through lectures, demonstrations, clinical practice, and examinations. The program is designed to be taken on a part-time basis and can be normally completed in one year. It is presented in four modules, each worth 50 credit hours. Each of these modules consists of two 3-day weekend sessions, (Friday through Sunday) held about one month apart. A practical and oral exam follows each of the first three modules. Acupuncture Level 1 Basic Elementary Acupuncture Discover the concepts underlying the basic anatomy of acupoints, neurophysiology, neuropharmacology, and recent research findings on acupuncture meridians, philosophy of the traditional Chinese medical system and modern research on acupuncture. Discussions will provide a brief history of acupuncture, traditional Chinese etiology and pathogenesis, organ systems and medical diagnosis; TCM philosophies, theories, laws; anatomy of acupuncture meridian systems; vital energy theory. Qi energy, meridian and acupuncture point location will be demonstrated and practiced. Presentation will consist of approximately 60% lecture and 40% clinical work, including assignment. Acupuncture Level 2 Fundamental Acupuncture Prerequisite: Level 1 or equivalent Develop practical skills in various Chinese therapies and traditional Chinese medical diagnosis. Discussions and practice will include indications, contra-indications, complications, and precautions of acupuncture, the differentiation of syndrome complex; tongue, pulse, Ryodoraku and Acu-o-matic diagnosis; ancillary techniques (acupressure, moxibustion, cupping, venopuncture), various needling techniques (including plum blossom and press needles), stimulation, electro acupuncture and balancing therapies (TMJ adjustment and Acu-omatic balancing). Presentation will consist of approximately 40% lecture and 60% clinical work, including assignment. Acupuncture Level 3 Microsystems of Acupuncture Prerequisite: Level 2 Develop an understanding of somatotopic representation of body systems in a peripheral localization. Discussion will include theory, points, clinical application of microsystems such as ear, nose, hand, foot, and scalp. Presentation will consist of approximately 50% lecture and 50% clinical work, including assignment. Acupuncture Level 4 Clinical Acupuncture Prerequisite: Level 3 Develop diagnostic and therapeutic skills in the clinical application of acupuncture. Discussion will include the general principles of acupuncture therapy, the basic principles for prescription and selection of acupuncture points, systemic therapy, clinical series (e.g., the musculoskeletal system, sports and family medicine, oncology, neurology, geriatrics, etc.) and medical problem solving. Presentation will consist of approximately 10% lecture and 90% clinical work. Final Comprehensive Examination Consists of a written and clinical examination of all parts of acupuncture theory and procedure, with an external examiner present. 4 2003/2004 Class Dates and Fee Schedule To participate in this certificate program, there is a one time only, non-refundable program admission fee of $50. Applicants who meet the admission requirements are required to register for each module. Full payment of $1195 must accompany each registration prior to the commencement of each module.
