2 UL rd Editio: Why is this so importat? UL 1449 is Uderwriters Laboratories safety ad performace stadard for surge protectio equipmet. I 2009, this Stadard was revised to the 3rd Editio. I additio to some omeclature chages, there were two very importat objectives for revisig the UL 1449 Stadard: to harmoize with the Iteratioal stadards for surge protective equipmet (IEC ) ad to modify performace tests to better simulate real world exposure. Type 1 SPDs Chages icorporated withi UL rd Editio provide three sigificat ehacemets for customers of surge products. The first ehacemet to the stadard is the additio of secodary surge arresters which are typically mouted outdoors ad prior to service etrace equipmet. The additio of surge arresters to UL 1449 esures that lie side devices (surge arresters) will be maufactured with safety related protectio similar to load side devices. The secod ehacemet icludes the additio of a Nomial Discharge Curret Ratig (I N ). The omial discharge curret test allows users to compare a surge protective device s durability (or ability to survive a lightig strike) uder a UL regulated test. The UL regulated test provides for a fair ad accurate competitive eviromet. The third chage is related to the Voltage Protectio Ratig (VPR). The past test was called surge voltage ratig (SVR). The requiremets of the SVR test were too weak to exercise may of the surge products i a way that would show how well they are performig. The ew VPR test is performed at 3000 Amps as opposed to 500 Amps ad surge products must show improved performace to obtai recommeded VPR levels of surge protectio. Type 2 SPDs New Descriptive Termiology Article 285 of the NEC title has bee updated to be cosistet with UL ad IEEE. The term Trasiet Voltage Surge Suppressor (TVSS) is beig replaced by Surge Protective Devices (SPDs). The requiremets for SPDs were chaged ad they are ow idetified by Type 1, 2, 3, or 4 depedig upo where the SPD will be icorporated withi the power distributio system. Type 3 SPDs Type 1 SPDs: These devices are referred to as a Type 1 SPD due to their locatio withi the power distributio system. This is typically o the supply side of the service discoect overcurret device (mai service pael). Type 2 SPDs: Typically service etrace SPD paels or brach circuit SPD paels that are coected o the load side of the service discoect overcurret device (mai service pael). Type 3 SPDs: Typically surge receptacles or cord coected poit-of-use devices. They are permitted to be istalled aywhere o the load side of a brach circuit up to the equipmet served, provided the coectio is a miimum of 10m (30ft.) from the service pael. Note: If the distace is less tha 10m, a Type 2 SPD (or a Type 3 SPD tested to Type 2 requiremets) must be used. Type 4 SPDs Type 4 SPDs: Compoet assemblies cosistig of oe or more Type 5 compoets together with a discoect (itegral or exteral) or a meas of complyig with the limited curret tests i UL Type 5 SPDs: Discrete compoet surge suppressors coected by its leads or provided with a eclosure with moutig meas ad wirig termiatios. 2

Stadardizatio The SPD Types (Type 1, 2, 3, 4) are the UL, NEC ad IEEE attempt to harmoize with the IEC stadard that uses Class 1, 2, 3 desigators. The sole reaso that UL did ot use Class 1, 2 ad 3 is that North, Cetral & South America lea towards the IEEE documets, which use a 8 x 20µs surge waveform istead of the 10x350µs surge waveform, as it more accurately reflects the coditios experieced durig a lightig strike. Sice the test is differet, the ame had to be differet. Service Equipmet Service Etrace The drawig to the right idetifies category A, B ad C as defied i the IEEE Trilogy of Stadards. Category C rages from the trasformer secodary to just iside the buildig etrace. Category B icludes all of the brach or sub-paels ad Category A icludes the receptacles ad poit-of-use devices such as cord-coected or plug-i surge devices.
