I have been challenged with the day to day activities of serving students directly at both the elementary and secondary levels and have worked as the Director of Health Services for the last several years. As school nurses, we have a real opportunity to make a difference for children in our schools. We see students through a different set of eyes and can impact their academic success by using our nursing knowledge and skills as part of the multidisciplinary team. In today s schools, each of us needs to be competent and flexible, use creative energy and be lifelong learners. We also need to celebrate each day and be able to laugh at ourselves and sometimes even our greatest challenges. In our time together, I will share the most up to date, science based information but will spend the majority of our time providing proactive strategies, helpful tips and realistic tools that will help you in your role the next day. Our primary focus will be on up to date ways to address challenging health care issues such as life threatening allergies, diabetes, childhood obesity, autism, and ADHD. These will be woven together with the ideas of school nurse competencies, evidence based practice and delegation principles. Communication and trust building is core to our practice and I will share some key ideas to help increase your skills in this area, particularly as they relate to communication about challenging student health issues. In our time together, I will share the most up to date, science based information but will spend the majority of our time providing proactive strategies, helpful tips and realistic tools that will help you in your role the next day. As school nurses, we are vital to the well-being of the children and adult staff that we serve. We also have a responsibility to our students and our district tax payers to explore ways to increase funding to manage the health needs of children. Our days are never exactly what we expect and our knowledge base needs to constantly grow.
