4 A Message From Seminar Leader, Nancy Norem Powell Dear Colleague: Bureau of Education & Research th Avenue SE PO Box Bellevue, WA Phone (800) Fax (425) During the thirty five years I have been teaching, change has been the most consistent word in our profession. Without a doubt, technology has been at the forefront of change and it continues to play a critical role in how we design and teach both content and skills, particularly at the secondary level. As a key part of emerging technology, interactive whiteboards have become a very powerful teaching tool. They make lesson planning easier, actively involve students in learning and give us almost unlimited opportunities to create lessons that are exciting to teach and fun to learn. This seminar has been specifically designed to provide you with a wealth of practical strategies for using SMART Boards in your classroom. It is my experience that interactive whiteboards make it much easier to meet the needs of ALL my students, especially those who might not otherwise be successful. Not only do SMART Boards make learning more engaging, but I also find it more exciting and energizing to present lessons that challenge students in new ways and actively involve them in learning. I look forward to sharing dozens of ready to use ideas and resources using the SMART Board in ways that enable us to enhance our teaching. We will cover a wide variety of the most current resources, tips and tools for using this amazing technology, ranging from specific ideas for using Magic Pens, Screen Captures, Dual Page Views, Pull Tabs, Animation, Flash Templates, Sounds, Graphics, Music, and more. I will also share timesaving tips for creating engaging lessons and using SMART Boards to enhance classroom management. As part of our fast paced day together, I will give you a wealth of techniques for using SMART Boards to assess student learning, post your notes and presentations for students to review, and give them the extra practice they may need to fully understand concepts and master specific skills. I look forward to sharing dozens of ready to use ideas and resources using your SMART Board in ways that enable us to enhance our teaching. It is a very exciting time to be in education. Your SMART Board adds a new dimension to classroom learning and student engagement. It is my pleasure to show you proven ways to empower your students to become better learners in your classroom. I look forward to sharing a valuable, stimulating day with you! Sincerely, Nancy Norem Powell P.S. Remember, the focus of our day together is on using practical ideas and tools to create engaging lessons for SMART Boards that will motivate your students, enhance your instruction and improve student achievement.. 4
