4 A Message From Your Seminar Leader, Greg Santucci Dear Colleague: Bureau of Education & Research th Avenue SE PO Box Bellevue, WA Phone (800) Fax (425) Occupational therapists are the best kept secret in schools! As our services become increasingly in demand, many of us are finding that the secret is out! We find ourselves trying to be everywhere for everyone; do our paperwork; collaborate with teachers; consult with parents; attend meetings; see our full caseload of students; and maybe eat lunch! We are some of the most flexible professionals in school; working in classrooms, hallways or wherever we can find space with whatever toys and resources we can carry from our vehicles. Despite our sometimes hectic schedules, I genuinely believe that our unique perspective on how children learn can change the lives of the students and teachers we work with. I d like to share with you many practical, evidence based strategies that will help you provide the most effective OT services for each and every student on your busy schedule. In addition to flexibility, another vital common characteristic among occupational therapists is that we are child centered. We understand that when a child is motivated to do something, there is no limit to their potential! It is our professional responsibility to stay current with the latest treatment modalities and implications of clinical research. I also believe that we should keep up with our students interests and what s happening in their world to help us engage and motivate them. When you have strategies that are proven effective and students who are motivated to participate, you will have great outcomes! My goal in our day together is to provide you with dozens of proven, practical ideas to take back to your school and use the very next day! Whether you are working with a challenging preschooler or an older student who has been receiving services for some time, my aim is to get you fired up and ready to return to your classroom with new ideas, new strategies and a new energy to deliver the most effective occupational therapy services to your students! My goal in our day together is to provide you with dozens of proven, practical ideas to take back to your school and use the very next day! I look forward to sharing experiences and collaborating with you! Sincerely, Greg Santucci, M.S., OTR/L P.S. As a practicing occupational therapist, I know just how valuable your time is. Therefore, my focus will be to share practical strategies that work in today s schools. 4
