1 Issue RB Issue April 2015 Welcome to the Weekly Regional Bulletin which is issued every Tuesday and designed to make sure staff have regular access to all key Trust information in one place. If any staff members have any comments or feedback they would like to share with the team, please feel free to get in touch by ing: WINSTON CHURCHILL TRAVELLING FELLOWSHIP The Trust is delighted to congratulate Mike Jackson our Chief Consultant Paramedic on being the first Paramedic to gain this fellowship and from a shortlist of 250 candidates this year. His project is recognising the seriously injured and where to take them and he will be doing a comparison of EMS systems in the USA. Mike said: I feel honoured to have been awarded this prestigious fellowship by the Winston Churchill Foundation especially as this year is such an important year with it being the 50 th anniversary of the death of Sir Winston Churchill. I hope the experience and knowledge I will gain from my fellowship will provide benefits to the Trust, the profession and the patient by improving the delivery of patient care to the seriously injured. Mike will be visiting a variety of EMS and Trauma Centres over a 6 week period including systems in Boston, Washington, Dallas, Atlanta, Texas and Los Angeles LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION A film that has been commissioned by North West Ambulance Service will demonstrate the care and compassion shown by colleagues when dealing with emergency patients. With the help of actors and frontline staff from Greater Manchester, the Trust has created two patient journeys that cross paths at hospital. They include a patient with chest pains and a patient who called her GP after suffering from breathing difficulties.

2 The film highlights the thoughts and feelings of patients as they access the emergency service and how the experience can be daunting and emotional. It also shows the considerations of clinical staff when caring for patients and how they work to get the right care. The film is currently in editing and will be shared as soon as it's ready. HAYDOCK PROJECT UPDATE The Haydock Projects Developers, Morely Estates, are pressing on with the plan to implement the works required to obtain mains power to the building. The works to supply mains power will involve some civil works in order to lay the ducting, once this is complete they will be able to pull through the mains cable and connect to the building and while termination and testing is being done NWAS will be in a position to return to site to pick up and commence completion of the fit out. The timescales for this is about 15 working days. The main point at the moment is getting a confirmed date for return to site so we can progress with the plans in line with migration of staff and services. New staff have been appointed and now in post, sadly as part of the changes to the new Regional Logistics Centre some long serving staff members will be leaving the organisation and would like to wish them well in their new ventures and pass on a thank you for their hard work and loyalty in service. LADYBRIDGE TRANSFORMATION UPDATE Phase 1 of the planned work is intended to facilitate the introduction of additional staff to the Ladybridge site at the earliest opportunity and is now in full progress in the lower south and lower east areas of the Lodge. This work focuses on creating an open plan space to accommodate Finance staff from Highfield and Whitefield. Other staff based at Whitefield will move in phase 2. As the Ladybridge Lodge reception has now closed, staff visiting the site must use the buzzer located on the wall inside the building to gain access. The buzzer is connected to the Hall reception during office hours. Outside of office hours visiting staff should go the Hall and will be assisted by the duty guard. All visitors to both sites should report to Ladybridge Hall to be collected by the member of staff they are visiting. NEW BUSINESS SERVICES MODEL A new business services model has been developed for the Ladybridge site which has now been approved by the Executive Management Team. The model is an integral part of the Ladybridge transformation project and aims to provide a fit for purpose corporate business facility which will add significant value to the corporate headquarters of the Trust. The Business Centre will provide an accessible facility to all permanent and transient staff as well as external visitors. Proposed services will include: 2

3 Booking management and audit of the new proposed hot desk facility Management of meeting room booking and usage leading to a central fully managed booking system for all Trust sites in the future Setting up and servicing of meeting rooms Central printer management Admin support to all Directorates on site eg for mail shots, bulk printing, laminating etc. Pro-active management of the on-site archive space. Delivery of site orientation training to new staff including fire and Display Screen Equipment assessments Implementation and management of a Clear Desk Policy Managed link between suppliers, deliveries, colleagues and site storage solutions This work is currently being led by Anne El-Garidi as part of the Ladybridge Transformation Project Group. TRUST BIDS FAREWELL TO MARK BOURNE Recently, the Trust bid farewell to Mark Bourne, Operations Manager after an incredible 30 years service. A gathering was held for Mark, who worked within Macclesfield to thank him for all his hard work over the years for the Trust. Head of Service, Dave Kitchin and Sector Manager Mike Moore attended on the day to present Mark with a commemorative shield. HAPPY RETIREMENT PETER WITTER Peter Witter, Area Service Manager for the Cheshire and Merseyside area, retired from the Trust on Friday 3 April 2014 after 34 years working for the Ambulance Service. Peter started work as a mechanic, later becoming a foreman, supervisor and when the Trust merger took place he became a service manager. Peter had a long and distinguished career with the service and had, over the years, built up a fantastic knowledge of the workings of an ever changing fleet. Peter had also built up working relationships with many of the various teams within NWAS and could be relied upon, when there were difficult situations, to find a solution. Peter had also built up a vast contact network with the support facilities that the Trust workshops call upon and often found solutions to problems to aid our support network. Peter had always dreamed of retiring whilst he was still young enough to remain active to enjoy this portion of his life, which he aims to do whilst enjoying the company of his wife Bren. 3

4 Peter has plans to enjoy many holidays which will culminate in a four month trip to Goa later this year. The Trust would like to thank both Mark and Peter for the commitment and long service to NWAS and we wish them long, happy and healthy retirements. CAPITAL PROGRAMME 2015/16 The Board of Directors has approved the Capital Programme for 2015/16. The total resources identified for the Capital Programme for 2015/16 amounts to 10,578k. This is made up of Depreciation, Sale of Assets and Internal Cash. Depreciation is generated by the on-going depreciation from the Trust s assets. The Trust currently has a number of assets which are identified for disposal. These are: Birkenhead Station, Clitheroe Station, Darwen Station, Preston Station, Formby Ambulance Station, Maghull Ambulance Station and Cadishead Ambulance Station. Internal Cash: The Trust is proposing to use a small amount of the cash balances to support the programme. The proposed schemes are broken down over the following main areas: Vehicles and equipment Workshops Estate IT Change management As NWAS won the 111 contract, capital investment will be required as stated in the bid. An additional 2,200k of Capital and Cash will need to be spent in order to fulfil the requirements. This investment will increase the Capital Programme to 12,778k. The 111 bid includes the depreciation over five years of the contract and therefore the cash position is protected. NEW PTS INFORMATION LINE PATIENT TRANSPORT SERVICE (PTS) The Patient Transport Information Line was launched on the 8 April This dedicated telephone line has been designed to enable staff to signpost patients and Healthcare Professionals to further information in a timely manner, and to also ensure call takers are more available to answers calls without delay. To facilitate this, the Contact Centre Agent transfers the caller to the Information Line advising of the relevant options if requested. The automated Line scripts provide generic information for all users to ensure an excellent patient experience. 4

ICT UPDATE WEBMAIL REMINDER In April 2014 the Trust announced that it had procured a number of licenses to allow NWAS users to access trust on their own personal device (for example tablets or smartphones). Originally access had to be requested via your manager, this was simply to save the ICT Service Desk being swamped with hundreds of individual requests. The majority of staff who require access to s via a personal device have been set up. The ICT Service Desk is now in a position to accept requests directly from individuals who require access but didn t originally request via management using the ICT Service Desk Portal (shortcut is on the desktop of all Trust computers): 6

7 When you double click the ICT Service Desk icon you ll see the ICT Service Desk Portal. From here go into the Service Catalogue and then User Administration; complete the form requesting Remote which will be configured in due course. DAVID BURTON 100K RUN FOR CHARITY In June, Parkway RRV Dispatcher David Burton, will be running a 100K race for his chosen charity. David, who has worked at NWAS for nine years, is running the race in support of the Alzheimer s Society. David s parents work for the Alzheimer s Society so he is fortunate to be acutely aware of the great work the organisation does. As well as this David has also seen friends and family members struggle with the affects of dementia and wanted to help out. David has always been into running and has completed a few half marathons but comes from a more cycling background having completed several long distance bike rides, including a few UK coast to coast rides and the fabled Lands End to John O Groats. David Said: Over the last few years, the simplicity of walking, hiking and running long distances has captured my imagination and I have become focused on getting out and about using just my own two feet as often as possible. My motivation for attempting the 100k run is my desire to have some fun, help the Alzheimer s Society and test my grit. I have experienced first-hand how devastating Alzheimer s and dementia can be for those affected and figured whatever little I can do to raise awareness and money can only be a good thing. One of David s toughest challenges yet was the 32 mile Howarth Hobble run he completed in March as part of his training for the Grand Union Challenge 100k run. This was a big step up for him in terms of mileage and with it being off road had lots of knee punishing ups and downs. David Said: I used the day to experiment with my run/walk balance, nutrition options and to work on the mental side of running long distances. Staying focused, determined and keeping a big smile on your face is just as important as having strong quads! If you wish to support David s cause please donate on his Just Giving page at: MILE CHARITY BIKE RIDE On the 9 May 2015, a team of North West Ambulance Service Paramedics (and a couple of friends) will cycle over 100 miles (plus over 6000 feet climb) from the AJ Bell Salford & Sale Rugby Stadium to Llanberis, Wales. Llanberis is the home town of Gareth Jones, a very close friend & colleague who passed away suddenly last year. After consultation with Gareth's family the team have decided to raise money for the CALM charity. They hope to raise a substantial amount of money for this well-deserved charity and thank you in anticipation for any donations. You can donate via their JustGiving page at: 9

UPDATE ON APPRAISALS LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT In February, having listened to feedback, the further simplified appraisal paperwork was launched to support coaching conversations at appraisals. Briefings and workshops are continuing across the Trust and the number of appraisals taking place is on the increase. 12

13 For year end , 45% of staff currently have an up-to-date appraisal. The target is for 100% of staff in work to have an up-to-date appraisal. However, 276 members of staff (6%) do not have a recorded appraisal date. Are you one of these people? If you have not recently had an appraisal you are encouraged to arrange a date for your appraisal with your manager. From 1 April 2015, appraisals need to be in-line with the principles for pay progression. However, please note that the provisions for increment pay progression in Section 1(a) (England and Wales) and Annex W (England and Wales) of Agenda for Change will continue to apply, except that in England, staff on pay spine points 34 to 54 will not be eligible for incremental pay progression from 1 April 2015 to 31 March Supporting appraisal materials can be found on the L&D intranet pages under the appraisals tab, including a guide for appraisers and appraisees, frequently asked questions, preparation template, paperwork, prompt sheets, and much more: Once an appraisal has taken place the appraiser needs to report the appraiser s name, appraisee s name and the date of the appraisal via appraisals.padr@nwas.nhs.uk or the report appraisals here link on the intranet, to ensure the data appears on the monthly Trust records. The Trust is always seeking to make improvements, so any suggestions can be made via appraisals.padr@nwas.nhs.uk.
