2 Welcome Dear Student, All staff at the College of Business would like to extend a very warm welcome to you on your arrival at the University of Derby. We re sure that you will enjoy your time as a student here and that you ll build relationships at Derby that will last well beyond your studies here. We will actively support you achieve all you would wish for at this exciting stage of your life and professional career. This is the first week of your new life at University. 3 INDUCTION Overall Purpose and Outcomes 1. To give you a meaningful and memorable first week 2. To prepare yourself for the university experience 3. To find out more about your programme, modules and your skills 4. To welcome you to our academic and business community 5. For you to think about what you want to do in the future.

4 By the end of the induction event you will be able to: 1. Evaluate Derby as a city of business and a city for students. 2. Apply your own innovation and creativity to a presentation to senior business leaders. 3. Reflect on your experience and use this to develop your own action plan for your personal development over your first year. 4. Start your programme at Derby Business School with confidence and the knowledge that we are here to support you in your journey to a degree and into the business world. You will have been introduced to: 1. Active research: going out into the city to find things out to satisfy the brief 2. High level presentation skills: you will hear from experts that can support and help you not only with this project but throughout your time at the university. 3. Networking skills: you will hear from experts and get the chance to practice in a real business environment which will prepare you for the wealth of events that you will be taking part in whilst at Derby. 4. Feedback skills: you hear from experts on how to give and receive feedback and practise those skills in a safe environment. 5. Employability skills: you will hear from experts internally and externally what employers want from an intern/graduate, so you can aim high. 6. The business community: during your time in Derby you will be given the chance to work with and contribute to the success of the business community. A 3 day project will introduce you to some of the key players that will become familiar to you over the years you spend at Derby 7. The programme you are studying, an introduction to your modules and you will meet members of staff who will be working with you.

5 Settling in To help you settle in we have organised a programme that will cover all new undergraduate students in the College of Business. Induction for year one students commences on 14th September. The first two days of the week will be focused on programme specific activities. During this period you will meet other new undergraduates you will be studying with, you will be introduced to your programme the subjects you will be studying during the year, and you will also meet some of the academic team who will be working with you. The Induction Week Project will take place from Wednesday 17th to Friday 19th September. During this induction event you will get to know your fellow students and work with them on producing a presentation

6 The knowledge and skills gained during this induction activity will provide a sound foundation for your future studies. By the end of the event you will be able to: Gather and filter relevant information Work effectively as part of a team Discuss the benefits of the local area Present information in a professional manner to academics and employers. You will have the opportunity to meet employers from Derby and the local vicinity to help you understand what employers expect from university graduates. You will be encouraged to look into the future as you explore your career aspirations and how you can use your time at the University of Derby to achieve your goals. This event presents invaluable opportunities for networking with very successful business professionals. Your Schedule Day 1: Monday 14 th September, Kedleston Rd Campus Room E801, 10am 1pm In the morning, commencing at 10.00am, the Programme Leader will be welcoming you to the University and taking you through an outline of the programme you will be studying and introducing you to materials which will help you through your study here at the University. You will be taking part in a number of exercises designed to help you get to know some of your fellow students and help you get yourself ready for your next three years at University! In the afternoon you will be guided through the enrolment process so that you have access to all the online materials you need and so that you have a university e mail address.

7 Day 2: Tuesday 15 th September, TBA 9am to 11am You will be introduced to each of the modules to be studied this semester by the module leader. Our learning platform, Blackboard will be introduced along with various multi media. We will discuss our expectations of you and your expectations of us during the degree course, as well as examine how work is marked and graded. 2pm to 5pm, TBA Engagement with extra curricular activities, both inside and outside of the University is very important to a successful student and accordingly, opportunities for such engagement will be detailed. You will be introduced to the Learning Resource Centre in the University as well as take part in further activities helping you to get to know each other. You will be given a time slot for the first meeting with your own personal tutor. Day 3: Wednesday 16th September Start 10am, Room OL2 After a welcome address and scene setting presentation by academic staff, there will be a presentation by a panel of local business people. They will tell you about their own stories; what they look for in graduates and profile the local area. You will be given the opportunity to ask questions of the panel. Panel members will also discuss presentation skills, networking and professionalism in preparation for the induction activity. You will then work in teams to gather information with the purpose of preparing a short presentation (8 to 10 minutes) with the title: Attracting People to Live and Work in the Derby Area The gathering of this information will involve research in the city of Derby. In case the weather is poor, please ensure that you have waterproofs and comfortable shoes.

8 Day 4: Thursday 17th September Start 9am, Rooms Available K204, N109, N111, N410, N701 Based at Kedleston Road for the day, you will work in your groups to prepare an 8 10 minute presentation in a format of your choice based on your research. You may use any visual aids of your choice. Rooms will be available in the morning for a base to conduct the work. 1 4pm, Rooms K203, N504, N720, N108, N112, T110 In the afternoon, from 1pm onwards, you will present to a panel of academics and fellow students. The best pitches will be chosen to present to our panel of local employers the following day in Quad, Derby.

9 Day 5: Friday 18th September Start 9am, Reception, Kedleston Road You will have the opportunity to join all new fellow business undergraduates at a city centre venue for a formal business conference. As well as the finalists of the business pitch competition, you will hear keynote speakers from a selection of prominent businesses. You will have the opportunity to personally network over lunch with these business people and to ask them questions about what they expect from new graduates. Dress; Smart Business Dress Transport to the venue will be provided if you need it. Ensure that you are on time. The panel will include the following keynote speakers: Mel Morris Owner of Derby County, Non executive director of King Digital King Digital is the leading interactive entertainment company for the mobile world; with people all around the world playing one or more of their games hits include Candy Crush Saga, Farm Heroes Saga, Papa Pear Saga, Pet Rescue Saga and Bubble Witch Saga. Mel has homes locally and all over the world and is committed to supporting and investing in Derby. The Sunday Times Rich List suggests that Mel s paper worth is around 430 million.

10 Sam Rush Chief Executive Derby County Football Club Sam took up his appointment in January 2013, and has over 15 years experience in Sports Management, and was previously with the Wiseman Media group. Sam has a background in law and is part of the University Court (a group of Senior Business People that advise the University). Graham Mulholland CEO EPM Technology Graham is CEO of EPM Technology, a fast moving business that was launched in 1996 with vision and drive towards, getting bigger, better and faster in advanced composite components, and high performance engineering. That capability opened business in aerospace, defence and F1 motorsport. Now a trusted partner for the production of carbon fibre components, EPM Technology works with four F1 motor racing teams, Olympic Team GB and the world s most expensive yacht, enjoying a reputation as one of the UK s most advanced manufacturers in its field. Rupert Carr Director of Birchall Properties Rupert has struck a deal with US firm Grand Heritage Hotel Group to develop a 400Million wellbeing centre outside Chesterfield. The complex, known as Peak Resort, already includes a golf course and areas of woodland and open countryside and will be at the leading edge of eco technology. The investment forms part of a series of deals with US investors worth more than 1.1bn that was announced during David Cameron s visit to Washington. NOTES:
