We operate out of Edward Pavilion, Albert Dock and provide legal services to thousands of clients across the country every year. We are ideally looking for an academically outstanding, highly efficient, self-motivated results driven, and capable law student with an ability to work effectively as part of our small friendly professional team. The student would have the opportunity to come on board, play an active part of the team and take away examples of work to help with future job search. We would like to have, on internship placement with us, a student who has completed at least year 2 of the LLB degree and who will be able to understand the issues related to our business. We want to give a student the opportunity to develop their skills, knowledge and experience while getting first-hand experience of life in a firm of Solicitors, real working environment. Our work placement will give you an insider's view of a career in law, providing valuable insight into what working here is really like. 2 We need a person that has completed at least year 2 of the undergraduate LLB degree, or is in the final year of their course. They need to have the following experience: Numerate person with a strong track record of academic achievement You'll be analytical, enjoy working in a technology-based environment. High levels of computer literacy to include MS Office, PowerPoint, internet and databases Proven ability to work co-operatively with others Analytical approach to problem solving Good organisational skills Ability to innovate and generate creative solutions to practical challenges The working hours: 9am to 5.30pm, 1 hour lunch break The placement will include a variety of tasks such as legal drafting and research, watching solicitors in court/tribunals to observe advocacy, sitting in at client meetings to learn how to obtain effective and clear instructions from clients and participating in case discussions with solicitors. The aim is to provide you with a real experience of the work in a law office. There will be no remuneration of any kind for the internship. A work placement is one of the best ways for students to improve their employability and begin a successful career in the professions. We will help you to develop your skills and understand the issues involved in working for a law firm. We will help you to gain experience, and provide supervision, guidance and support as necessary. We will take part in the assessment process, by carrying out an appraisal at the end of the placement. We want to help and support you to get employment after you have completed your work experience with us. We will design and create a Personal and Professional Record of Achievement Portfolio, and provide a reference that reflects your work experience with us. We will enable you to feel part of our small, friendly, humorous, team, in our warm, friendly, work environment. 3 Work for the charity that helps charities work The Directory of Social Change (DSC) is an independent charity that provides information and training services for the charity sector. Volunteer Researcher - Liverpool This is a great opportunity to develop new skills and gain experience in the voluntary sector. Working closely with the Policy and Research team based in DSC s Liverpool office, you will assist in specific aspects of our research work. This could mean for example, contributing to the production of books and subscription websites by researching grant-making organisations and updating databases for the benefit of our customers (mainly small to medium sized charities and voluntary groups). With excellent verbal and written communication skills and a real interest in the voluntary sector, you can make the most of this opportunity. 4 Neurosupport is a charity which supports anyone with a neurological condition across the UK. The organisation has its national centre within Liverpool city centre. The organisation supports people with conditions such as brain tumour, Alzheimer s disease, brain haemorrhage and brain injury. We offer non-medical support and advice on all social and emotional aspects of living with a neurological condition such as support finding work or accessing benefits, counselling and support groups, legal advice and by providing further information about their condition. Neurosupport has always been an organisation which has excelled in ensuring the inclusion of disabled people within its workforce and its volunteering team. In this respect, we are an example of best practice in delivering the requirements and expectations of government legislation around diversity and equality. We are aware however, that our team and the vast majority of the people we support are not diverse in other areas such as race/ethnicity. We would like someone to research the local area in terms of its diversity and make a comparison with the make- up of our team and of the people we support so that we can see which groups of people we need to get better at attracting / supporting. Although we are not a Public Sector organisation, we aspire to have the policies and procedures in place to help achieve the expectations laid out in the Public sector Equality duty. Tasks would include: Researching local area stats on protected groups. Collecting information from throughout Neurosupport s services and various staff teams to check for diversity levels. Creating a comparative report to inform the organisation on areas it needs to improve on. Highlighting areas within the organisation where statistical information is not currently being collected and/or collated. The recommendations from the research project would be used as a basis for future Neurosupport plans and strategies going forward.

Tasks would include: Day-to-day tasks would involve collation and analysis of Neurosupports current referrals and live cases. A review of the amount and the level of quality of the legal advice and information currently offered by Neurosupport. Investigation into new areas of legislation which maybe vital to those affected by a neurological condition but which are not yet covered by the organisations services. If possible, the recommendations produced from the report would also include information regarding possible avenues for future funding possibilities but this would depend on time constraints and the experience / skill set of the individual involved.
7 We are looking for someone with the following attributes: Basic knowledge of various areas of law which may become relevant to someone affected by a neurological condition such as social care, medical care, welfare benefits, wills and trusts etc. Practical knowledge of the structure and systems that exist within the legal community. Experience of the third sector and its funding environment desirable but not essential. Research and evaluation skills. Information collection and consolidation. Report writing. Good communication skills. Tact and diplomacy whilst working with individuals who may have difficulty communicating or who may be experiencing emotional turmoil. 9 This will mean: Evaluating the scope and reach of our current advocacy and advice work Identifying key trends and their implications in respect of carers rights and legal entitlements to benefits within the social welfare agenda Gaining feedback from carers as to the challenges and barriers to achieving their rights and entitlements Making recommendations for addressing them both in terms of our service improvements for Sefton Carers Centre and how staff can influence strategic decisions makers using our evidence base Knowledge of the legal background to social welfare benefits, rights and advocacy for carers An ability to construct a robust service evaluation Proven ability to work across a wide range of people form carers, volunteers, professional staff and strategic decision makers Effective project management and time management skills to complete the work in the specified period to good standards Excellent report writing and communications skills A can do attitude to problem solving and overcoming obstacles Willingness to develop own knowledge and ability to demonstrate service outcomes and outputs Empathy with the challenges of being an unpaid informal carer The opportunity to utilise and extend your skills from academic to practical applications knowing you have will have made a very important contribution to the lives of the thousands of informal carers and their quality of life in the borough of Sefton. 10 The Family Impact for Prisoners Children team provides support to children with a parent in prison, or children whose parents have been in prison and have recently been released. Out whole family model means we offer support to the child, their parent/carer and, where possible, the prisoner parent. We provide families with advice on what to tell children about imprisonment, one to one support for children to discuss their feelings and wishes regarding contact, peer group support for children where they can meet others who share their experience whilst having fun, a support group for adults who have a loved one in prison and a support group for those who have been in prison but are now released. We also advocate on behalf of families to prisons, probation, social services and health services. We are looking for a student to join our small friendly team who has an interest in children s rights to help us strengthen our approach to supporting prisoners children. The student on placement will be accountable to the Specialist Practitioner (Lorna Brookes) and the Service Manager (Seamus Walsh). The task is to develop a children s rights working document to strengthen the work we deliver for prisoners children. The student will gain direct experience working with prisoner s children, partners of prisoners and prisoners post-release to ensure they understand from first-hand experience the issues that these families face, and their related support needs. There may be the opportunity to take a child directly on a prison visit. These experiences will help the student on placement ensure the document they produce reflects real life experiences for prisoners children in relation to the wider policy documents and research within this field. To be committed to supporting children and young people to have better long term outcomes.

To have an interest in Children s Human Rights NB: This is a summer placement (June / July) but we would like the student to attend a conference on May 16th which we anticipate will inform the research and production of the working document. The service we run is a unique service. We are the currently the only specialized community based service for prisoners children in the Merseyside area and in some areas of the country there are no such services at all. You will experience direct work with prisoner s children and their families, and the document you produce will be an active working document which will have an important impact on our service and the lives of many prisoners children. 12 Crass Routes offers workshops and events to nurture and celebrate recovery through personal spiritual development, live art and community action. We work with people affected by mental health needs, homelessness and/or addictions. The placement is part of our Dream out Loud ; working with marginalised people to improve well-being and recovery. We will use a variety of creative media in the workshops and there will be outdoor sessions working on developing a community orchard. Your work will involve taking part in the workshops and community action sessions; assisting with recording and collation of evaluation of the project; and a small number of in depth interviews with participants. The interview conversations you record will help us form a clearer picture of how our work benefits people in their recovery from mental distress/addictions. The information you gather will go towards our project report to the funders, the Clinical Commissioning Group Wirral, to encourage them to fund further work. Activities are mainly on Wirral (Birkenhead and West Kirby). Previous experience is not required. Open mindedness and willingness to engage personally with the process and the people are all that is necessary.
