Aside from transaction- driven mass data processes, business processes are people business. They are not carved in stone. When it comes to knowledge- intensive business processes in particular, the majority of BPM applications are proving to be too rigid and inflexible. They don't make use of the know- how of their users and instead work against how knowledge workers think and work! This keynote speech will focus on the transformation from IQ to WeQ and the key question of how BPM can use participative processes to combine employee knowledge and empowerment with corporate objectives. And even today we see a polarization in this renewing BPM market. On the other hand the nature of work and the work performed by people are changing. At the center of these changes are unstructured processes and the management of these processes will augment the performance of people who perform routine work, and many people will gradually be able to take on more difficult, less routine, tasks. Case management is one of the most popular examples. Of course talking about change also entails that there is an organizational dimension in every BPM initiative. Finally we are gazing into the future of BPM. Not because we think it's not an important topic, but because everyone has a different understanding of what it means. Workflow isn't just a matter for the DMS market it also appears in ERP environments and in other areas relating to the IT application landscape. Following a brief outline of the hyped- up predictions from the last 20 years, the talk will provide an opportunity to take stock (What is currently happening in the market? What are all the different meanings of workflow? What are the logical fields of application for the different categories?) and offer clear definitions on the various segments and current buzzwords: ad hoc workflow, adaptive case processing, transactional workflow, BPM, early scanning & routing, etc. Participants will receive a clear introduction to the types of workflow that are relevant to them, understand that there isn't ONE workflow that is suitable for all the different process automation variants, and learn how they can define and assess the options available to them. He has worked in the field of document management/archiving since As an advisor at Diebold Deutschland GmbH, a technology and management consultancy firm in Frankfurt, he wrote the first studies (Diebold Archivstudie, 1987) and organised the first events (Archivseminare, April 1985) on this subject in Germany. In 1997, Bernhard Zöller founded Zöller & Partner GmbH, a strictly vendor and product- independent consultancy firm specialising in document management, enterprise content management and content workflow management (workflow). He is also a board member of the ECM body at BITKOM. 7

8 We have reinvented the workflow. On a single platform. No longer a question of either/or: adaptive AND normative The established BPM systems on the market serve either traditionally structured (normative/model- driven) processes or situative, knowledgebased processes. 9 Removing the rigid process corset Many key operational processes are now standardised and automated to a great extent. This is the only way in which mass transactions for orders, goods movements, invoices, etc. can be carried out. In knowledge- intensive departments, however, the reality of the business situation is too complex to allow it to be incorporated into process models.
