2 Free Activity Prior registration necessary For further information see: A practical one-day workshop aimed at gathering together the impressions, vision and experience of different stakeholders involved in the process of research and innovation in Catalonia with a medium and long term perspective, and at finding out what unites and what separates them, how they perceive the environment and what challenges and solutions they see there. It is also intended to take a closer look at examples of success stories and identify the keys to success in these companies: listening to business people and learning about their experiences in small, medium-sized and large companies which have found collaboration to be a cornerstone of development, competitiveness and prosperity. It is intended to identify all the business possibilities that make use of cuttingedge technologies with the purpose of offering pointers to new opportunities. It is intended to examine the reasons for the growing interest shown by private international investors in Catalonia and discuss the state of affairs as well as prospects and strategies for the present and future from the standpoint of local investment. It is also intended to further explore the growing opportunities offered by European public and private funding within the framework of the RIS 3. It is intended to set the ball rolling in order to reach an agreement on and submit a roadmap of pragmatic, specific actions to the Parliament of Catalonia, which can contribute to achieving a goal, the need for which almost everyone now sees. 4 1/ Henkel & research. A commitment to collaboration: research & industrial production. Henkel works at three R&D centres that are strategic examples of development on a worldwide scale. Henkel and the Institute of Chemical Research of Catalonia (ICIQ ) in Tarragona A centre dedicated to developing high-performance adhesives through innovative curing reactions, taking an experimental and computational approach. These adhesives offer solutions for the electronics and automotive industry, as well as applications in the field of DIY. Henkel R&D&I and Advanced Technology Laboratory located at the Autonomous University of Barcelona Research Park (PRUAB) Centre dedicated to developing and testing adhesives with a memory effect, essential in the electronics field Henkel and the LEITAT Technology Center in Terrassa Centre dedicated to designing new ingredients and more effective and ecological detergents. Thanks to this collaboration Henkel is able to innovate through centres of excellence that provide pioneering solutions worldwide. This triple initiative is a good illustration of how industry and universities can work together to unite research and industrial production, and thereby contribute to economic recovery. Elisabet Torres, Technical Manager of the Henkel Advanced Technology Laboratory in Barcelona. 2/ Oryzon Genomics. ORY-1001, a molecule to fight cancer. Founded in 2001 by Dr Carlos Buesa and Dr Tamara Maees, this company now has a molecule to fight cancer, ORY-1001, at the clinical trials stage. This is a milestone for Oryzon, which has coped with the crisis by focusing on this drug. It is one of the few companies in the world with a drug of this kind undergoing clinical trials, and the enormous international expectation it has aroused has resulted in a multi-million-dollar collaboration agreement with the multinational Roche. Oryzon Genomics has licensed its first drug to a large multinational. Roche will pay $21 million to the Catalan company for the license of two patents that include a molecule to treat acute myeloid leukaemia. Roche will fund phase 1 trials of this drug in humans, which will be held at the Hospital Vall d Hebron in Barcelona and in the United States under the supervision of the R&D team at ORYZON. The agreement reached in April this year also opens the door to close research collaboration between the Swiss multinational and the Catalan company. Carlos Buesa, founder and general manager of Oryzon Genomics. 3/ Fractus. Ongoing research, internalisation and licensing in a global market. Pioneers in the development and worldwide marketing of antennas using fractal technology. The company business model is based on ongoing research, innovation and licensing differentiating factors that have favoured its expansion. In the year following its foundation (2000) the company earned several hundred thousand euros in sales, a figure which had increased to over 25 million euros by the end of 2012 (95% of sales outside Spain), with 30 million antennas produced via outsourcing. A few more tens of millions of antennas manufactured under license for manufacturers such as RIM (BlackBerry), LG, Motorola and Siemens should also be added to this total. Fractus now has a large intellectual property portfolio with over 50 inventions protected by more than 200 patents and patent applications in the USA, Europe and Asia, and it has sold more than 35 million antennas worldwide. 5 4/ Tecnomatrix and VICOROB. 3D technology for the automotive sector. Family business with three generations of experience, founded in 1927 and dedicated to dimensional control devices. The company currently has 24 employees and a turnover of two million euros, a figure that has increased 25% annually over the last four years. Tecnomatrix has developed a system consisting of a sensor and special software to measure the correct position of the headlights, window panes and indicators in vehicles. In collaboration with the TECNIO VICOROB centre at the University of Girona (UdG), the company has developed new 3D scanning technology to monitor transparent and opaque components that until now could not be analysed three-dimensionally without painting or manipulating them. This system allows fast measurement on the production line. Xavier Conesa, general manager of Tecnomatrix. 5/ Devicare. Lit-Control, the first device that allows control at home by the patients themselves of renal lithiasis. Devicare is a technology-based company engaged in the development, manufacture and marketing of self-service diagnostic medical devices that allow the patients themselves to monitor, predict and take care of their health, thus improving their quality of life and, in general, the care quality and efficiency of national health systems. Devicare has developed Lit-Control, the first self-service diagnostic device for the control and prevention of renal lithiasis (calculi or kidney stones), a disease that affects between 5 and 10% of the world population (700 million people). Lit-Control is an example of cooperation between companies and various research centres. Besides Devicare, a group of doctors and scientists from the University of the Balearic Islands (UIB) took part in the project. They suggested the idea of the team, which also includes the Institute of Microelectronics of Barcelona (IMB-CNM) attached to the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), the Centre for Sensor, Instrument and Systems Development (CD6 ) at the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC) and the ASCAMM Technology Centre. Rosendo Garganta, director and co-founder of Devicare. 6/ La Farga Lacambra-DIOPMA Research Group. Innovation to overcome the crisis and avoid a new one. The company La Farga Lacambra, which focuses on the production and sale of semi-finished copper products, has collaborated uninterruptedly since 1996 with the Centre for Design and Optimization of Materials and Processes (DIOPMA) at the University of Barcelona (UB). This joint university-industry initiative has led to the development of new copper alloys for railway electrification and also innovated the production process. The transfer of technology and knowledge from DIOPMA has contributed decisively in transforming a company which was in receivership into one of the world leaders in its sector. Lacambra is the first company in the world to process this product with secondary raw materials. This has enabled it to open up new markets, both nationally and abroad, diversify its product portfolio and expand the range of possible applications. So far, fifteen plants have been built worldwide (in United States, China, Cuba, Italy, Korea, Iran and Mexico, among other countries). Oriol Guixà, vice president and CEO of La Farga Lacambra Lunch. The use of advanced technologies is an area of rapid growth with considerable cross-cutting scope. How can companies take advantage of them to improve processes, reinvent products and even reorientate their business activity? The possibilities are boundless. What are the business opportunities offered by recent technological advances? Some people already have the experience... experts and businesspeople tell you all about it! 1/ Drones: fun and business. The future is already here! The entertainment and model-making sectors and open-source communities have led the field so far in the civilian use of drones. In the short term current business models aim at their general use in agriculture, property surveillance and urgent deliveries in rural and residential areas. The medium term will see the development of drone lanes, rather like the tram and bus lanes in urban environments, as well as home delivery services and internal transport functions inside factories and office buildings. Your imagination is the limit! Additive manufacturing is the latest invention that may change human life in ways we can hardly imagine. Technically, 3D printing is just a small part of additive manufacturing: the process of joining together materials to make objects on the basis of the digital data that describe them. Today is the visible point of an immense iceberg that represents the production methods of the future. Come and discover the enormous potential of 3D printing. Together we will discuss the new opportunities it offers society, industry and the country. Magí Galindo, director of the Department of Industrial Design and Development at the LEITAT Technology Centre. 4/ Smart fabrics, the textile sector and new technologies. The ability to transform the environment. Two examples of the innovative textile research being carried out at a TECNIO centre at the Technical University of Catalonia (UPC) in the field of feminine hygiene products, made of cotton fibre and produced by the company Cohitech. They are totally natural and free of super-absorbent materials, additives, plastics or other ingredients that can be harmful to sensitive skin and pollute the environment. Technitiger is a new, fast-expanding, highly innovative Catalan company. Recent experiences in the manufacture of surgical drapes, which regulate the temperature of the patient, and different items of protective clothing will be examined. Explanations will be provided by business people and by the director of Innotex Center, with almost 50 years experience researching textile products with multiple applications, and responsible for joint research in these companies.
