1 WORKSHOP ANFIA ANIE Monday 19 April 2010, 11:00 a.m. - Hannover Messe Halle 6 F 01 Sustainable mobility: the Italian technological challenge An innovative paradigm for a new vehicles' generation Greetings from ANFIA s President Ladies and Gentlemen, welcome to you all and thank you for your participation to this workshop today. Italy is the official Partner of Hannover Messe this year, and we are delighted to have had the opportunity to organize this event in partnership with ANIE, thanks to ICE, Italian Institute for Foreign Trade who is in charge of the Italian institutional participation to the fair. Technological challenges that Italian automotive industry has to face in order to develop a sustainable mobility is the topic we are going to discuss today. It was chosen since it symbolizes the progress of the automotive sector as key sector of Italian economy, also referring to the title of this edition of Hannover Messe: Future will be on show. The same topic is on show in the exhibition area of the Italian Hall, where you can find both the current products and the experimental models made by our industry. 1

2 Now a brief description of Italian automotive sector represented by ANFIA - Italian Association of the Automotive Industry: - approximately 3,000 companies; total annual turnover of 95 billion Euros; 275,000 direct employees (with about 1 million indirect ones) - 6.2% of Italy s GDP (11.4% if we consider a broadened estimate of the sector) - Italy s production chain invests between 2 and 3 billions in R&D, making it the largest private investor at the national level. Our industry stands out because of its intellectual abilities, technical skills and talent for creativity and flexibility, qualities that are all rarely found in one nation and which allow us to conceive, develop and manufacture beautiful, high-performance and top quality products. But this is not enough. It is necessary to work at improving and assuring mobility. The image of Cars Disney movie, even if the outlook on mobility it represents is too thoughtless, suggests the idea of mobility as a key issue for individual freedom, for free traffic of goods and people and in general for our 2

3 economic and social development. Actually, to make mobility be safe, smart and enjoying, in one word sustainable, we still have to work on some important aspects involving all the actors of the mobility system according to an integrated approach: - Infrastructures - Intermodality - Driver s training - Infomobility and Telematic technologies, for which we are a leader in Europe In our opinion sustainable mobility has to be: - Less expensive - Less polluting - Safer - Smarter (and more pleasant) We also strongly believe that Sustainability and Safety, related to products and production processes, are two crucial drivers that foster the growth of the automotive industry. These factors contribute to the customer s satisfaction, to the environmental balance and 3

4 also to the corporate reputation, in addition to boosting competitiveness and the creation of value. In the last decade, significant innovations have been introduced in terms of limiting CO 2 and emissions, spreading the use of safety systems and design systems aimed at recycling components and raw materials. In particular, a lot has been done by our production chain in terms of technological evolution of traditional engines and new engine types, with important results in reducing the impact on the environment and improving the energy efficiency of motor vehicles. But many other challenges are in front of us. Reduction of CO 2 emissions: European Commission took on the commitment to reduce car emissions to 130 g CO 2 /km within (120 g CO 2 /km with the aid of eco-innovations); long term objective is to reduce them to 95 g CO 2 /km from This challenge is particularly difficult if you want to avoid the result of No emissions no emotions, using the expression of Aiko Toyoda, President of Toyota Motor Corporation: reaching a significant reduction of the emissions without renouncing to emotions. 4

5 Another challenge we have to deal with is the development of electric vehicles. Forecasts for 2020: - global electric car production: million units - global electric car registrations: nearly 6 million units million units in USA million units in Asia (Japan-China) - 2 million units in Europe (registration target both of Germany and of France is 1 million units) Electric vehicles sector will remain a niche sector for some years, so starting from now and until 2020 we also have to keep on improving the other available alternative fuels technologies, also investing in hydrogen, CNG and flexi-fuel technologies. New European Regulation on CO 2 emissions will oblige high-powered cars manufacturers to invest in hybrid engines, while small/medium cars manufacturers will directly invest in electric engines. Electric car market: population living in big urban centers (covering km/day), using it as second car and depending on battery recharge availability. 5

6 Batteries recharge: now it costs 400 Euros/Kwh (6,000 Euros/15 Kwh), so the reduction of this cost is another technological key challenge. It is necessary to halve these values to reach a target cost of 200 Euros/Kwh (3,000 Euros/15 Kwh). The costs of electric cars compared to traditionally fuelled cars are 4,000-5,000 Euros higher for consumers and 3,000-3,500 Euros higher for car manufacturers; pay-back time is years. Night-time cost of electricity is 0.06 Euros/Kwh, one third less than day-time cost. Electric engines and batteries allow a big energy recovery when you brake. This means high energy efficiency and reduction of PM emissions. Italy already has an important production chain for electric vehicle components: the experience of Fiat- Chrysler alliance will represent a chance of integrating further know-how and competence. Now we have to face the challenge of reducing time-to-market, quickly passing from prototypes to current production and later becoming a leader in big serial production. 6

7 Investments in Italian production chain for electric vehicles are fundamental and must be included in future R&D plans. And now I m pleased to hand over the floor to Guidalberto Guidi, President of ANIE. We hope this workshop will foster the debate on a topic of global interest. 7
