2 Why study this programme? This programme is designed for individuals wishing to pursue careers in either computer security or forensics, where knowledge of the law would be advantageous, or in a law department where knowledge of computer forensics or Internet security would be required. The programme is suitable for both the newcomer to computer security and the law practitioner who wishes to further their skills. It covers relevant skills, theory and methods in information and communications technologies, crime and law as well as legal, practical and theoretical studies that underpin everyday practice. It will ensure that students have a basic understanding of the legal, regulatory and international standards requirements pertaining to computer security and crime in different regions of the world. 3 first universities in the country to use Virtual Desktop Infrastructure, which provides our students with remote access to our resources. We have pioneered programmes in computing, information systems, digital and multimedia technology, interactive multimedia games, networking, Internet and web technologies, data mining, mathematics, statistics, decision science and computational science and engineering. Our students study on the university s Greenwich Campus, which is part of the Old Royal Naval College and on the banks of the River Thames. The university s largest campus, it is centred on three baroque buildings, designed by Sir Christopher Wren at the end of the 17th century. The surrounding town is a mix of markets, shops, restaurants and pubs, as well as some of the most famous museums and tourist attractions in the country. By train, central London is only a few minutes away. What will you study? Content On this programme students: Develop knowledge of computer crime, criminology, police and forensic methods and the legal requirements for collecting evidence Gain an understanding of the threats to the networks and servers of businesses Learn to administer and configure business-critical distributed applications Develop an understanding of current forensic tools, as used by the police, e.g. EnCase, FTK, Hex editors, etc., enabling graduates to contribute quickly to the digital forensics needs of the legal system. Core courses Project a substantial individual project on a topic chosen by the student (60 credits) Computer Crime and Forensics Crime, Terrorism and the State (30 credits) Managing IT Security and Risk PLUS Two additional options from: Cyber Security Network and Internet Technologies and Design User-Centred Web Engineering Audit and Security Software Engineering Management This is a rapidly changing subject area and course content may change in order to ensure that it is up to date and industry relevant. Career opportunities Upon successful completion of this Master s programme students should be proficient in computer security and systems security will be in a position to follow careers in these areas. Teaching and assessment The programme will strengthen the career prospects of legal professionals in both civil and criminal areas of practice. Issues relating to computer forensic investigation are increasingly important in private practice as well as for employment in the various regulatory bodies such as the Financial Services Ombudsman, the childprotection agencies. and HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC).
