SCHOOL OF COMPUTING & MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES Computer Science MSc Greenwich Campus
Why study this programme? During this programme students study, employ and reflect on the principles underpinning computer science. Computer languages, human computer interaction, data mining and enterprise systems are key areas of focus within this programme of study. Students will reflect on the latest technologies and programming languages, and develop a sound theoretical understanding and in-depth practical experience of designing, constructing and modifying a wide range of software systems. The emphasis is on the underlying theory and practice of software construction. Students will reflect on the analysis, management, and design and construction of the whole software engineering life cycle using a number of approaches and methodologies. The programme leads students to reflect on the choice of appropriate software tools and techniques through the study of realistic industrial case studies. This programme is designed for individuals wishing to pursue careers as computer science professionals. Opportunities exist within the programme to take industrial examinations such as Cisco, Microsoft and Sun Java certifications. From artificial intelligence to software design and software patterns, from high-performance computing and virtualisation to computer graphics, at the end of the programme students are equipped to deal with the intense demands of modern software development and related techniques. The programme also aims to give the students the ability to further develop themselves in a rapidly changing discipline by becoming reflective practitioners. Why study with us? The School of Computing & Mathematical Sciences offers an exciting, diverse and innovative portfolio of programmes. These are designed in close collaboration with industry and informed by worldclass research and enterprise, leading to great jobs in industry both in the UK and internationally. The Sunday Times University Guide has ranked our computer sciences and mathematical sciences subjects in the national top 10 for teaching excellence with the two subject areas rated 7th and 4th respectively. In the Guardian 2012 University Guide, mathematics at Greenwich was rated 12th in the country and second in London. The School consistently performs well in the National Student Survey, regularly achieving up to 100% student satisfaction in computing and mathematics subjects. We are recognised nationally and internationally for our cutting-edge research and innovative approach to curriculum development. In fact, we are one of the first universities in the country to use Virtual Desktop Infrastructure, which provides our students with remote access to our resources. We have pioneered programmes in computing, information systems, digital and multimedia technology, interactive multimedia games, networking, internet and web technologies, data mining, mathematics, statistics, decision science and computational science and engineering.
Our students study on the university s Greenwich Campus, which is part of the Old Royal Naval College and on the banks of the River Thames. The university s largest campus, it is centred on three baroque buildings, designed by Sir Christopher Wren at the end of the 17th century. The surrounding town is a mix of markets, shops, restaurants and pubs, as well as some of the most famous museums and tourist attractions in the country. By train, central London is only a few minutes away. What will you study? Content On this programme students: Gain practical experience of data mining and knowledge discovery in databases on a variety of datasets and in a variety of application fields Administer web server and application server operation Explore and critically evaluate a range of data models, database architectures and features supported by different database management systems Critically evaluate a range of information systems and database architectures and their features in relation to data warehousing and data mining Explore in detail the functionality offered by a range of generic software applications and justify selections from this range that would be appropriate for a variety of enterprise scenarios Be able to develop small but realistic applications for mobile devices Understand the technical challenges posed by current mobile devices and wireless communications Use and evaluate a diverse range of server-side technologies for building multi-server, multi-tier web applications Evaluate the quality of the software development process Gain the ability to evaluate and select appropriate software tools and techniques to assist the development of component-based distributed computing systems Develop competency in the programming languages and tools taught, and evaluate and reflect their scope and limitations for particular types of software applications. Courses Enterprise Patterns and Frameworks Software Engineering Management Enterprise Software Engineering Development High Performance Systems Engineering Programming Enterprise Components Project a substantial individual project on a topic chosen by the student (60 credits) PLUS Two additional options from: Data Warehousing Mobile Application Development Business Intelligence and Data Mining User-Centred Web Engineering Enterprise Web Engineering Enterprise Systems Integration This is a rapidly changing subject area and course content may change in order to ensure that it is up to date and industrially relevant.
Key facts Attendance: 1 year full-time, 2 years part-time starting in September or January. Entry requirements: to find out more about entry requirements, please visit and type your programme into the search engine; then click on the Key Facts tab on the programme page. Those who have substantial commercial or industrial experience including software development using modern programming and languages should seek an interview with the programme leader. How to apply: Applications should be made on a university application form. This is available from the Enquiry Unit or International Office or can be downloaded from apply There is no closing date for applications to postgraduate programmes, but many fill up quickly, so applicants are advised to apply early. You do not have to wait for first degree or other examination results.
Career opportunities Graduates from this programme are expected to be proficient in the key theoretical and practical areas in computer science, including their application to modern software systems development. Graduates should be able to work as consultants or senior team members developing distributed computing applications. They should also be able to pursue further research study in the areas of artificial intelligence, computer science and other application areas requiring substantial software development. Teaching and assessment The programme is taught using a combination of formal lectures, classroom-based tutorials and laboratory sessions and case studies. The programme will be supported by a range of online learning materials and forums to help you to maximise your potential for success. Professional recognition This programme offers accreditation from the British Computer Society (BCS), the chartered body responsible for establishing and maintaining technical and ethical standards in the computing profession. This means that on successful graduation from this degree, you will have fulfilled the academic requirement for registration as a Chartered IT Professional (CITP), including the CITP Further Learning Element and partially fulfilled the education requirement for registration as a Chartered Engineer (CEng) and Chartered Scientist (CSci).
