Doctoral Study in Education EdD/MPhil/PhD Avery Hill Campus
concerned with education and training. This mix of disciplines and perspectives provides a rich and collegiate learning experience. Both MPhil/PhD and EdD programmes will encourage you to extend your academic experience through writing for publication, attending and presenting at conferences and by studying advanced research methods in the social sciences. What is the difference between these programmes? The MPhil/PhD programme is undertaken either full-time or part-time through a supervised thesis. Students register for an MPhil and on nearing completion are required to pass a transfer viva in order to progress to the PhD and the final viva. The EdD programme is offered part-time only and comprises a two-year taught programme followed by a supervised thesis, which is examined by a final viva. Why study for a doctorate? The MPhil/PhD and EdD programmes are aimed at mid-career and senior professionals in all areas of education, training and related professional fields who have a commitment to their continued professional development and an interest in contributing to the knowledge base of their professional field. The university s Department of Education & Community Studies has 75 doctoral students drawn from a variety of organisations, including schools, colleges, universities, local authority advisory services, health and care services and other public and private-sector organisations Two doctoral weekends are held annually, offering students the opportunity to meet as a group, listen to keynote speakers, network, share practice and present their research. The evauation from students and the external examiner have commended the quality of the learning experience, student support, thesis supervision and the high rates of timely completion. The MPhil/PhD programme will: Provide you with an individual programme of doctoral study. This will comprise an opportunity to propose your own research study in order to complete a supervised thesis at the forefront of doctoral research and professional and academic practice. Provide an overarching, individually supervised teaching, learning and mentoring approach that will enable you
to develop your role as an advanced researcher and/or professional practitioner in your field. Enable you to develop a comprehensive, contemporary, advanced knowledge of content, research methods and theoretical context in an area of education-related practice. Through this, you will make an important contribution to knowledge informed by original research and scholarship. The EdD programme will: Provide you with a doctoral programme comprising taught courses and a supervised thesis that is at the forefront of professional and academic practice. Provide an overarching teaching and learning strategy that will enable you to develop your role as an advanced professional and/or researcher. Enable you to develop a comprehensive, contemporary, advanced knowledge of content, research methods and theoretical context in an area of professional practice. Through this, you will make an important contribution to knowledge informed by original research and scholarship. Why study with us? The Department of Education & Community Studies, part of the Faculty of Education & Health, offers undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes for those interested in careers in education, childcare, youth work and the wider public sector. Many members of the department are internationally recognised leaders in their field and have published in highly regarded academic and practitioner journals. The department is home to two research centres: the Centre for the Study of Play & Recreation and the Natural Learning & Environments Centre. We also have close links with professional bodies such as Play England and the National Youth Agency as well as with partner colleges and the wider community through joint programmes and work placements.
The department is located on our Avery Hill Campus, which is set in pleasant parkland in south-east London. Avery Hill has convenient transport links to our other campuses and to Kent and central London. The Students Union University of Greenwich ( organises a variety of sports and social activities on campus. What will you study? The EdD programme of study is as follows: Year 1 Research Methods 1: Advanced Qualitative Methodology and Methods Research Critical Review 1: Foundation for Practice Preliminary Investigation 1: Researching Your Context The Search for Originality Year 2 Research Methods 2: Advanced Quantitative Methodology and Methods Critical Review 2: Development of Advanced Practice Preliminary Investigation 2: Pilot Study Writing for Publication (you will be required to complete four disseminations, such as conference, doctoral or poster presentations or publications in professional or peerreviewed journals, prior to progression to the thesis stage) Years 3 6 Thesis (360 credits) Research Methods Workshops Key facts Attendance: EdD: 2 years part-time, fortnightly on a Thursday evening ( ), followed by a thesis phase of up to 4 years comprising a timetable of supervision tutorials. MPhil/PhD: up to 6 years part-time or 3 years full-time, following a timetable of supervision tutorials and teaching agreed with the supervision team. Entry requirements: You should have a Master s degree. How to apply: Applications should be made online at There is no closing date for applications to doctoral programmes, but places are limited, so you are advised to apply early.
Career opportunities Doctoral graduates often gain promotion within their current field or in a university setting, developing their expertise through further research and publications as early career researchers. The thesis phase is monitored through completion of supervision records and an annual research progress report, followed by an upgrade viva enabling transfer to the final stage of doctoral study and a viva on completion of the thesis phase.
